Which is the difference between oral lichen planus of the tongue and oral hairy leukoplakia of the tongue?
From the pictures i have seen on the internet they seem the same to me.I have these little white irregular lines that sometimes appear on the lateral sides of my tongue but when i see the pictures they resemble to oral hairy leukoplakia and lichen planus of the lateral sides of the tongue.I just want to know how can i distinguish the main differences between the two as far as their appearance and symptoms are concerned?
I think that this should clear it up! This is from my Kerr and Ash's Oral Pathology book from 1986. I am not convinced that anything has changed.
Lichen planus is a relatively common dermatological (skin) disease with oral manifestations in about 1/3 of the cases. The clinical oral manifestation vary from flat or slightly elevated lesion with striae to extensive areas of ulceration or erosion (erosive lichen planus). Except for the erosive type, the oral lesions are seldom a diagnosis problem or require treatment. The presence of skin lesions helps to make a diagnosis in erosive lichen planus. It has unknown etiology, but may be stress related and looks white and lacey.
Oral hairy leukoplakia is a viral leukoplakia of the tongue in immunosuppressed male homosexuals who have or may develop the features of AIDS..... Clinical lesions appear as white, slightly raised "hairy" plaques on the tongue, they usually do not rub off to leave a bleeding surface as may be seen in candidial lesions.

How can you tell the difference between leukoplakia and oral candidiasis by inspection?
I have seen both patches of oral hairy leukoplakia and oral candidiasis.
The lesions of OHL are always darker in appearence and look more like mold on the tongue and the hard pallate. The lesions have rounded edges and are always multiple in numbers.
The lesions of oral candida are always pink in the middle with concentric whitty pathces on the edges which gives them a whitty appearence on the edges.
They are also round edged and are are more on the hard pallate.
The other important observation is that aral candidiasis hurts and the person with it will complain of pain during chewing and swallowing (Dysphagia). while the lesions of OHL do not hurt and sometimes the person does not know they are there untill an oral exam is done or during oral hygiene. oral hairy leukoplakia and no hiv?
My doctor says I have oral hairy leukoplakia. I have had 3 hiv tests since then and she reassures me they were all negative.so i dont have hiv. but everything i read says hiv. she put me on acyclovir and the symptoms come and go but will not go away completely. so something must be causing it. My doc says it comes from smoking but everything i read says it has to do with the immune system as it is not regular leukoplakia it is oral hairy. im not sure to trust this doc as she missed a tumor on my cervix when i was pregnant the sixe of a tennis ball which turned out to be cervical cancer. i just dont know what to do. what else could cause oral hairy leukoplakia if i do not have hiv??? [please help me
If you've had three negative tests, I'm sure you are negative. Usually, the testing is done by an outside source, not in office. I think that since this is causing you so much worry, you really need to see another Doctor for a second opinion. In fact, considering that she missed that tumor, I would find another Dr. completely. This is the only way you will find some peace of mind. Good luck. (+ info
What can i use to get rid of leukoplakia?
I just quit smoking recently, but I noticed that my throat was hurting and I found a patch of what looks like leukoplakia at the top of my throat, but i do not know how to treat it, it seems to be getting better, but it is still bothering me. What can i use to make it go away quicker?
You cannot speed up the healing time without seeing you doctor.
A small percentage of leukoplakic patches show early signs of cancer, and many cancers of the mouth (oral cancers) occur next to areas of leukoplakia. For that reason, it's best to see your dentist if you have unusual changes in your mouth lasting longer than a week.
well done for quiting smoking! (+ info
How does oral medication for acne know how to clear up the area?
I have a minor acne problem on my chin and the corner of mouth. I recently went to the dermatologist to find out how to get rid of it. She prescribed oral medication that treats acne. My question is how does the oral medicine know where the acne is and how does it clear it up? I guess I'm just really skeptical about this whole thing. Thanks!
The medicines are antibiotics. They get rid of all the bad bacteria in your body. This will also get rid of acne because acne is caused by bacteria. (+ info
Is it possible to have leukoplakia on leteral sides of tongue?

Yes, you can have leukoplakia on the sides of your tongue; hairy leukoplakia almost exclusively occurs in those with deficient immunity (HIV or malignancy). This is something you should definitely have checked out by your dentist or oral surgeon and possibly biopsied - better safe than sorry. (+ info
What is oral motor planning and how does it affect toddlers speech?
My two year old only has a hand full of words and someone mentioned he could have oral motor planning issues. I'm still waiting to hear back from EI for an evaluation.
Yes, he understands everything and knows exactly what he wants.
My now three year old daughter was saying very few words at two and she was referred to our local Elks program, California-Hawaii Elks Project. They will come to your house and work with your child and evaluate them to see what the problem may be. My daughter has "Developmental apraxia of speech (DAS) " which is where she knows what she wants to say, but has a problem forming her mouth in the correct way to say it. She sees her speech therapist once or twice a week at our house. She loves it and she is improving well. (+ info
