leptospirosis diagnosis?

how will you diagnose leptospirosis
----------

On infection the microorganism can be found in blood for the first 7 to 10 days and then moving to the kidneys. After 7 to 10 days the microorganism can be found in fresh urine.

Hence, early diagnostic efforts include testing a serum or blood sample serologically with a panel of different strains. It is also possible to culture the microorganism from blood, serum, fresh urine and possibly fresh kidney biopsy. Kidney function tests (Blood Urea Nitrogen and creatinine) as well as blood tests for liver functions are performed. The latter reveal a moderate elevation of transaminases. Brief elevations of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) levels are relatively mild. These levels may be normal, even in children with jaundice. Diagnosis of leptospirosis is confirmed with tests such as Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and PCR. Serological testing, the MAT (microscopic agglutination test), is considered the gold standard in diagnosing leptospirosis.

Leptospira can be cultured in Ellinghausen-McCullough-Johnson-Harris medium, which is incubated at 28 to 30 °C. The median time to positivity is three weeks with a maximum of 3 months. This makes culture techniques useless for diagnostic purposes, but is commonly used in research.  (+ info)

I'm paranoid, Do I have Leptospirosis?

I just read an e-mail that my mom had sent me yesturday after I had a can of coke .... This is what the e-mail said:

This is Serious! This incident happened recently in North Texas .
A woman went boating one Sunday taking with her some cans of coke which she put into the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken to the hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. She died on Wednesday.

The autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis. This was traced to the can of coke she drank from, not using a glass. Tests showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis.

Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances. It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash the upper part of all soda cans before drinking out of them. Better yet, use a glass instead of the can. The cans are typically stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned.

A study at NYCU showed that the tops of all soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets (i.e.)..full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.

Please forward this message to all the people you care about.
I JUST DID!

-THE END-

But before that I it was pizza night and I grabbed a coke from my fridge and opened it without washing it (Cause no-one does that these days)
And my parents and sisters were like "You better wash that cause its been in factoriesand stuff,," but once I saw that e-mail,

I was scared as f*ck!

PLEASE HELP ME! I DONT WANNAA DIE AT 13!!!!!!! :((

Yes you are being paranoid. It isn't a bad idea to rinse the top of a can of soda, but it isn't necessary. You are exposed to leptospirosis every day. It is in the soil it is on outdoor surfaces, in mud puddles etc. And it hardly ever results in infection and when it does, it is hardly every serious. The story you are speaking about has been going around since 1998, and it is most likely completely fabricated. Think of it this way, billions and billions of cans of soda and beer are drunk every year around the world.. do you ever hear of people dropping dead left and right from leptospirosis? Because with that many cans being used, surely it would show up as a significant cause of concern for the National Center of Disease Control. If the top of your soda can seems dirty or sticky, wash it. Otherwise you are perfectly safe.  (+ info)

rats urine drys, can you still catch leptospirosis if it comes into contact with any part of your body?

No, not if the urine is completely dried, moisture is needed for the organism to survive;  (+ info)

This is an urban legend. Leptospirosis is a real disease, however no one has ever died by drinking pop that had rat urine on the can. You can read more at the following website:

homeopathy treatment (medicine) for human Leptospirosis"?

Any condition can be treated by homeopathy. The entire symptoms has to be taken into account and a remedy has to be carefully selected. There is nothing like labeling a disease in the name of diagnosis in homoeopathy. If a well selected remedy is administered definitely a sure result will be observed.  (+ info)
