Leptospirosis in rats advice please. . . .?

I have just found out there are mice in my bedroom. Its geting in through a small hole somewhere and we saw it run across the carpet the other day. Weve put traps in place and hopefully they will work but im now really worried as ive heard about Leptospirosis.
Is it mainly rats who carry this or mice too? I know its in the urine of rats so if the mouse has urinated on the carpet ect, can the bacteria still live?
Any advice would be much appreciated :)
----------

The chance of you catching Leptospirosis is unlikely, It's also pretty slim chance of the mouse having it.Mostly seen in temperate and the hotter Countries.

Leptospirosis in rats?

i know ive asked bout this but i was just wondering as i am in college and i do animal care i clean out rats cages and farm animals ect. all the time.. at the college i think there is about 20 rats all together, could any of these have the disease and be passed onto us giving us leptospirosis? if we were to touch there urine whilst cleaning them out and forgott to wash our hands or even touch our mouths ect. could this be possible to get the disease? and can you tell which rats have the disease or not?
----------

IF they have it and you expose yourself, then YES you MAY become infected...

Note that if the rats are housed according to proper animal care standards, there should be a sentinel that is housed in the same area under the same conditions. These sentinel animals should/would be screened for diseases on a regular basis. So, testing to identify a parasite or bacterial disease (e.g. leptospirosis) can/should be determined by pathology reports.

If you think you are infected, see a doctor!  (+ info)

Leptospirosis
You can be infected through direct or indirect contact with infected animal urine, fluids or tissue. Indirect exposure through water or soil (and in some countries foodstuffs and water) contaminated by urine from infected animals is also a common way to become infected. The bacteria enter the body through cuts in the skin, and through the skin lining the mouth and nose and the membrane at the front of the eye. Many rats are infected and can pass the infection to people.

Person-to-person spread is very rare, if it occurs at all.

How do you avoid getting leptospirosis?
No human vaccine is available, although there are vaccines for cattle, dogs, and other animals. People who are at risk, either through their job or recreational activity, should wear footwear and dry suits if possible, and should always wash or shower after their activity.

Both these groups should take care to cover all cuts and grazes with a waterproof dressing before going near water or animals. Protective clothing should be worn at work.

Catching the disease from pets is rare. Dogs are often vaccinated against leptospirosis - it is possible to catch the disease from dogs that have recently been in contaminated water including gravel pits or rivers. Those who work with dogs may also be at risk. It is rare in cats and captive-bred rodents that have not been exposed to the bacteria. Recent cases have occurred in golfers who have become infected while retrieving balls from stagnant pools.

What are the symptoms of leptospirosis, how long do they take to appear and how long do they last?
As many of the symptoms are similar to those for other diseases, a diagnosis is based on information on occupation or recreational activity, and is confirmed by a blood test in the laboratory.

There are two main types of leptospirosis. The more common and less serious form of the disease often resembles influenza, with fever, muscle aches, conjunctivitis and sometimes vomiting.

The more serious form (also known as Weil's disease) causes severe illness. This may start suddenly with fever, headache, muscle aches, conjunctivitis, vomiting and diarrhoea or constipation.

Symptoms develop normally from 7to 14 days after contact with the infection but they can develop in as little as three days or as long as 30 days.  (+ info)

Do hamsters get Leptospirosis?

My friend got peed on by her hamster, and she's not sure if the pee went to the wound on her hand o-o; I've already told her to wash her hands an apply alcohol just in case...

So, do the get it?
----------

I cannot find any evidence of hamsters contracting leptospirosis, the closest I can find is a vole being potentially subject to that.

Leptospirosis is extremely rare in humans, so your friend will probably not contract that condition. However, keep the wound clean, and I would also suggest the use of neosporin.  (+ info)

Homeopathy treatment (medicine) for human Leptospirosis"?

Homeopathy does not treat specific illnesses, but a person (or animal) suffering from leptospirosis could be treated homeopathically. The way homeopathy works is to match the patient's symptoms to those produced by a remedy in a healthy person. The sufferer would need to consult a qualified homeopath or homeopathic doctor/vet who would choose a remedy based on their individual symptoms.

The symptoms of the first phase of leptospirosis are quite non-specific, ie. flu-like symptoms including headaches, muscle aches, photophobia (eye pain from bright lights), chills and fever, watering and redness of the eyes. The second phase is more serious and can affect the nervous system and vital organs leading to kidney disease and even death.

There are many remedies which might treat someone with this disease but each person would probably have slightly different symptoms so would need a different, individualised remedy. The homeopath would need to 'take the case' of the sufferer, taking into account their exact symptoms, including the things that aggravate or relieve the symptoms.

If the disease is in the first phase it would be easy to treat homeopathically by a lay homeopath (not a doctor) - in fact you would not even know you had the disease before you were better.

Obviously, in the second phase things are much more serious and would often require hospitalisation. There is no reason why a homeopath couldn't treat the patient while they are being monitored in regular hospital - or if you're lucky enough to live in India, you could be treated in a homeopathic hospital. Treatment could be given alongside conventional treatment (antibiotics) or alone. In the past homepathy was used to great effect on people suffering from acute infectious diseases such as cholera and typhoid and the mortality rate rate was far, far lower than those treated conventionally. There is no reason why it would not be equally successful in the treatment of leptospirosis.  (+ info)
