what's wrong with wearing slippers?

Why are slippers so maligned? Why are they considered to be unfashionable, or just for older people?

I'm not old, and I love wearing my slippers, particularly traditional "carpet slippers" made of corduroy or checked wool with elasticated gussets. They are cheap, very comfy and I think they look great! The fluffy or furry varieties look great on women...

I'd wear them all the time if I could, both indoors and outside! Anyone else agree, or disagree?

How can I get help for my sister who I think has paranoia?

My sister's behaviour has become increasingly paranoid over the past few years. She has had several jobs, thinks everyone is out to get her, and is fearful and mistrustful. She has very few friends and no interests or engagement in life. She moves house frequently and accuses people of maligning her. She also misinterprets innocent comments and twists them round. She is hurtful towards us, her family, but is impossible to communicate with. I think she needs help but know she wouldn't listen to me. Is there anything I can do?
Rambleon..if you want to talk about it email me on [email protected]. I'd love to talk to someone in the same situation.
Robert H..I know it may seem heartless, and ironical to talk about a paranoiac behind her back, but I just don't know what to do. It's easy for people to say go to a doctor, but she won't listen and mistrusts them. Anyway, you've succeeded in stopping the answers...

Why are people so opposed to genetic engineering?

This was spurred by 'EducatedWoman's question. G.E has a lot of potential to do good if it is done right. It can reduce the use of pesticides, use of animal products, and it can improve nutritional quality. If we truly care about the environment, and about animals, how does it make sense to completely shoot down G.E instead of analyzing it on a case by case basis?

Besides, every grain, fruit and vegetable we eat today is palatable because of G.E. Early farmers were all genetic engineers. They changed the genetic stocks of plants and animals by selecting for superior quality. That means they tampered with nature, using nature's own methods. The only difference is that artificial methods can be used today, but it doesn't mean it's automatically bad.

G.E has been much maligned by the media. 99% of the time, G.E food is better for you than something treated with a gazillion pesticides. As for organic food, that's treated with fish meal, blood and bone. Who wants that?
We are tampering with nature just by living on this planet. Sometimes, G.E can *minimize* our interference with nature. I would definitely choose GM food if it was safe and had environmental or other benefits.
Just to let you know, I'm thumbing up all reasonable answers

Cross-breeding and hybridization, the methods previously used to manipulate farmed products, are VASTLY different than the methods used for GE. Breeding two types of corn is very different than breeding a plant and a jellyfish, which is of course impossible. Yet GE enables the genes from a jellyfish to be put into a plant. This has actually happened, to try to make fruit glow when ripe.

We have just started mapping DNA - as a science, it is in it's infancy. And the ability to pull out and plug in individual genes is even newer. We should not be doing this on a mass scale before we understand the ramifications of GE.

There have been many times when technology surged ahead of knowledge. Heroine was once used by doctors to treat alcoholism, because they didn't understand all the properties of heroine. Thalidomide was declared safe for all, and then the deformed babies started showing up.

The changes made by GE are much more fundamental than the use of any drug. We are using the building blocks of life as Tinker Toys, without really knowing what the profound and long-lasting effects will be. This is a time for caution, and testing, and more caution, not the time to enter these products into the mass food chain.

How would you feel if your child was born deformed because of a GE food, and they just said "oops" and pulled it off the market? What are the long term effects of these products. The answer is - we don't know! And until we do, we need to slow down.

At the very least, GE products should be labelled as such. The GE companies are fighting this, because they know people don't want GE food. We should at least have the right to know what we are buying. The tobacco companies knew and denied for years the effects of tobacco use, and its addictive properties. The drug companies knew and denied about the side effects of Thalidomide. I don't trust ConAgra, Monsanto, or any other huge GE company to police whether or not my food is safe. Corporations choose money over poeple, every time.  (+ info)

I like my coffee in the morning!?

some facts about coffe below but I add suger to mine and that is bad for me but there is no way I will ever drink it black what do i do to keep it healthy and sweet but in a healthy way?

Want a drug that could lower your risk of diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and colon cancer? That could lift your mood and treat headaches? That could lower your risk of cavities?

If it sounds too good to be true, think again.

Coffee, the much maligned but undoubtedly beloved beverage, just made headlines for possibly cutting the risk of the latest disease epidemic, type 2 diabetes. And the real news seems to be that the more you drink, the better.

Reducing Disease Risk
After analyzing data on 126,000 people for as long as 18 years, Harvard researchers calculate that compared with not partaking in America's favorite morning drink, downing one to three cups of caffeinated coffee daily can reduce diabetes risk by single digits. But having six cups or more each day slashed men's risk by 54% and women's by 30% over java avoiders.

Though the scientists give the customary "more research is needed" before they recommend you do overtime at Starbuck's to specifically prevent diabetes, their findings are very similar to those in a less-publicized Dutch study. And perhaps more importantly, it's the latest of hundreds of studies suggesting that coffee may be something of a health food -- especially in higher amounts.

In recent decades, some 19,000 studies have been done examining coffee's impact on health. And for the most part, their results are as pleasing as a gulp of freshly brewed Breakfast Blend for the 108 million Americans who routinely enjoy this traditionally morning -- and increasingly daylong -- ritual. In practical terms, regular coffee drinkers include the majority of U.S. adults and a growing number of children.

"Overall, the research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful," says Tomas DePaulis, PhD, research scientist at Vanderbilt University's Institute for Coffee Studies, which conducts its own medical research and tracks coffee studies from around the world. "For most people, very little bad comes from drinking it, but a lot of good."

Consider this: At least six studies indicate that people who drink coffee on a regular basis are up to 80% less likely to develop Parkinson's, with three showing the more they drink, the lower the risk. Other research shows that compared to not drinking coffee, at least two cups daily can translate to a 25% reduced risk of colon cancer, an 80% drop in liver cirrhosis risk, and nearly half the risk of gallstones.

Coffee even offsets some of the damage caused by other vices, some research indicates. "People who smoke and are heavy drinkers have less heart disease and liver damage when they regularly consume large amounts of coffee compared to those who don't," says DePaulis.

There's also some evidence that coffee may help manage asthma and even control attacks when medication is unavailable, stop a headache, boost mood, and even prevent cavities.
----------

I'd grow it if I could, but for now I'll have to settle for the roasting to brewing for me.

I will only drink it black. If I need sugar, it's not good enough. I know everyone has their own taste, that's just mine.

The only thing that goes in my coffee is (in the evening) brandy, Irish Cream, Frangelico, Amaretto, or whiskey.  (+ info)

why are women so keen on vaginal delivery with no interventions?

You certainly hear a lot of women discuss the "empowerment" of delivery without pain meds, inducements, or other "unnecessary interventions" (the list is quite long). Yet without these interventions mothers even 100 years ago tended to die a good bit more than they do now. The whole thing seems very anti-doctor and anti-science, which also seems like an artifact of the affluent West - you have to be pretty sure you're going to live through childbirth with a healthy baby in order to go on so much about doctors and their darned interventions, even if the docs are the ones who are saving your life!

About 22% of all labors and deliveries in the USA have at least one complication, and about 15% of first-time moms will need a c-section to ensure the best outcome for moms and babies. Now, I understand nobody wants to have surgery, that it's scary, and that recovery is longer and all. And yet, what would you rather? A vague sense that you missed out on some "magic", or a dead or badly disabled child (or be dead yourself)?

I don't understand why obstetric medicine, instead of being hailed as a triumph of the 20th century for women's rights (given how dangerous a prospect childbirth used to be), is instead maligned and rejected by many women as useless. And yet in spite of all the badmouthing of medical professionals, I wonder how many of these women would dare to give birth without any medical doctors available "just in case". What is this sense of empowerment and rejection of science and education? I hear so many people say "doctors don't know everything" or "doctors just want to rack up a big bill to charge me with" or "I'm a mom, I understand my body better than this doctor." What the heck did these people go do medical school for 4 yrs and a residency program for another 4-8 years for? I'm pretty sure they know more about how to help me, especially when I'm in pain and doing something as hard as delivering a baby, than I know myself! Why do women sound off so much on "natural" delivery? What's the point? Why don't they trust their docs to help them?
what I am discussing is the pervasive belief that doctors are out to get you, when medicine saves lives. A c-section, for example, may not ultimately be strictly necessary, but if there is any doubt as to it, I'd rather have one and be done than risk it. Wouldn't you?
----------

With my first labor I had an epidural that lead to several complications and an eventual c-section. I had really bad PPD so I obsessed over how my delivery didn't go as planned over and over and over and over! In my mind I felt my c-section was the cause of all my problems ( I didn't get to see my son for over an hour after delivery, we didn't have that instant bond, I had a really rough time with recovering from surgery and taking care of a newborn at the same time which eventually led to my depression). So when I got pregnant with my 2nd baby I thought it was my chance to fix it. I could have a VBAC, non medicated delivery and I would feel like a real woman. I was devastated when I wasn't able to VBAC (I went past my due date) but realized...dude...my baby is going to be here, I'm going to be here, we are all going to be safe, SO WHAT if I didn't have a natural birth...I carried a baby for 9 months, grew it inside of me and it was brought into the world, who cares how it got here.

So yeah, I can see how a woman may feel like she is missing out on something..I would kind of like to know how it feels to go into labor on my own just to know what it is like, but hey...as long as the job is done, we are all healthy and happy...it doesn't matter to me anymore.  (+ info)

if male circumcision supposedly prevents STD's why don't they circumcise women also?

After all, it's "cleaner" and "looks better."
If it's good for males, it should be even better for females, after all, we know how dirty female genitals can be; that's why they have more than 1,500 products for cleaning/deodorizing the vaginal area. By the way, smegma is also produced by females in the labial folds and the female foreskin--the clitoral hood (which is what is removed in a female circumcision). It is a much-maligned substance that is natural and normal, and is actually beneficial. The genitals of both males and females have mucosal tissues, to keep them soft, supple and sensitive. Ignorant people think that there is something wrong with being normal and unmutilated.

I am 110% against circumcision. i just find this SEXIST
Soap and water cleans the penis, knives don't
----------

It is very sexist.
Circumcision doesn't prevent the spread of STD's though. That still hasen't been proven, it's trying to be proven but it's failing.

My teeth need to be fixed but i don't have insurance or good credit. What can i do?

My teeth are messed up pretty bad. My front two teeth are bucked and i chipped the bottom when i fell a year a go. So i basically have a crooked and maligned smile. My canines are tucked behind the rest of my teeth too. I'm tired of hiding my teeth out of shame of not having a perfect set. I don't have insurance or good credit and i wanted to know if there is an alternative way to get cosmetic dentistry. Maybe a company that lets you pay monthly or something along those lines? I'm pretty desperate at this point and am on my last drops of self confidence. Thanks in advance.
----------

Only a handful of dentists I know use Care Credit (because the dentist needs to pay them). Here's a number you can call to find a provider in your area. (866) 893-7864

The Care Credit I use is through GE Money Bank they offer a 9 or 12 month same as cash deal. If paid off within that time limit, no interest. If not all paid off then you have to pay all the back interest rate.
I managed to pay it off, but had an emergency that happened after all my insurance was used up. I now have 22.98% interest.
My credit is on the high end of Fair, not quite good.

You also might be able to exchange your labor for a reduced price. Can you file paperwork, call to remind appointments, etc.
Get estimates.

Is there a dental college nearby? Compare price between a student dentist and an established one.
Student dentists take forever (double and triple the time).

Maybe you could make an arrangement with a dentist to do a type of layaway. Start making payments to the dentist until you have half or 3/4 of the money paid before the procedure is done.

New dentists have such high student loans that even after 5 and even 10 years they're still paying them off.  (+ info)

girls, what size shoe do you wear ?

and out of 10 - how 'well kept' do you perceive your own feet to be ?

1 = bunions, maligned/bent toes, cracked heels, dead skin, webbed feet, ingrown toe nails, bumpy toe nails...basically your feet alone are enough to scare the living daylights out of men.

5 = feet show vague signs of wear and tear, but you'd need to be up close next to them to notice, otherwise they just look normal shape wise - the only time they get cleaned is when you rregularly take a bath/shower - men wouldn't think much about that part of your anatomy should they see it.

10 = pedicured regularly, you're proud of your tootsie tootsies, in fact so proud you play 'my feet look better than yours bitch' in public next to other women, and occasionally they catch the attention of guys.

sorry i guess i asked 2 questions then ?
p.s - im taking 'reflexology classes' at a local college and wish to pursue this as a career sometime within the next 2-5 years time girls.

I also took up photography 3 years ago, and use the female anatomy (their body, various parts of it not just their 'naughty parts') as a focal point on which to draw artistic inspiration, my photos arent bad.

if you are open minded and cool about sending me pics of your feet (need to see the soles too) then hit me up on mssgr, i'd be grateful to you big time. im aka 'rawkondude2k'.

peace.
oh and that means yahoo, thats a yahoo mssgr contact name 'rawkondude2k'

just append the 'at' yahoo and the dot com to it if u wanna email me with photos of your feet girls.

Haha funny question :

I wear like 6 or 7's . They don't really have imperfections. I take care of dead skin and often do my nails, but not really professional pedicure because I don't want to spend my money on that. I'd give them an 8.5

& I love wearing sandals :D  (+ info)

The Great Homoeophatic Challenge....I dusted the heavy cannons.?

The Truth about Homeopathy
Anyone treated by a homeopath can attest to its efficacy. It works on animals, babies and unconscious people. Hardly what we would call the "placebo effect"! Yet that is what most traditional medical people would call it since they can't find material substance in homeopathic remedies beyond 12C potency. In 1996, Shui-lin Lo of the California Institute of Technology, who neither is a homeopath nor wants anything to do with alternative medicine, discovered an odd characteristic of water. When he diluted a substance to the extreme, exactly as Hahnemann did 200 years earlier, Lo found that unusual crystals formed in the water when it was shaken. These "ice" crystals had bizarre electrical forces. In addition, they did not "melt" at room temperature. Lo dubbed the crystals "IE" -- ice with an electrical field. Not much relevance to homeopathy. Yet.
About one year later, UCLA immunologist Benjamin Bonavida discovered that biologically active IE crystals boosted immune systems components up to 100 percent. The homeopathy connection was made. No matter how dilute the solution got, the special ice crystals would form. A very dilute substance definitely could affect the body.
In spite of 200 years of therapeutic success, homoeopathy has been maligned, vilified and homoeopaths have been charged as liars and frauds. Chased and ridiculed like the first martyrs of Christianity they prevailed and stand. In 1841, England was ravaged by cholera. Statistics showed that four times as many lives were saved by homeopathic medicines than by other conventions of the day. Having succeeded in quashing two serious cholera epidemics in Europe, public acceptance of homeopathy grew. Homeopathy remains tremendously popular in England to this day. So much so, that the Queen herself carries homeopathic remedies when she travels and is attended by homeopathic physicians. (Dr. Ronald W. Davey, Homeopathic Physician to Her Majesty the Queen of England) The Queen of England and the Royal Family have always used homeopathy. In fact, the Prince of Wales coined the term “complementary medicine”. Over the Channel in France, over 7.000 MD’s, 700 Veterinarians and 2.000 dentists prescribing Homoeopathic medicines!! In 1970 there were fewer than 200 practitioners in America. At present it is estimated there are over 3500 in the United States. Homoeopathic remedies are found on shelves of national chains like Walgreens, CVS and Wal-Mart. The public spends over 300 million dollars a year on homoeopathic remedies. Considering the cheap price of homoeopathic preparations, it would translate to about three billion US $ in pharmaceuticals medicine per year. So now guys STOP trolling and challenge this article.
Sagar and David G.:
Please stop concentrating on single name even as popular as the Royal Family of England. Or are you suggesting that you know something better or more than they do. I simply go by the very good health, looks and age of their family. If you really believe in what you say I don't like your chances in reaching the age of 100 in good condition. The good work of more than 55.000 MD's (world wide) practicing homoeopathy is a very good argument to follow.
----------

"A baby will respond to its parents' expectations and behaviour, and the placebo effect is still perfectly valid for children and pets. Placebo pills with no active ingredient can even elicit measurable biochemical responses in humans, and in animals (when they have come to associate the pill with an active ingredient). This is undoubtedly one of the most interesting areas of medical science ever."

What I want to know is, how have those babies reached a cognitive stage of development where they can respond to their parents "expectations"? Last I heard, babies operated on a system of reflexes and immediate rewards, called sensorimotor intelligence, and thus wouldn't be able to reflect on what their mother is giving them and whether or not it will help.
Also, pets. I dissoved homeopathics into my mother-in-law's dog's water bowl. He never saw me do it, yet he drank his water and his infection (which he had had for 2 years with no help from any veterinarian) was gone in a matter of weeks. Coincidence? possibly. But there was no way he was actively analyzing that I was giving him something and it would make him better. If that was the case, why did the pills they had been giving him for years not have the same effect?

If homeopathic medicine works, and it works on the placebo effect, then how come conventional medicines that don't work aren't working on the placebo effect as well?  (+ info)
