How long should one go without talking or singing to cure laryngitis...?

I'm a singer and my choir has a performance next Wednesday. Will I be able to sing by then? Also, how long should one typically refrain from talking before the laryngitis has run its course? The silence is truly driving me insane. Also, when I can sing again, will my voice be damaged as a result of this? I've never had it before...Thanks in advance!! ~Indie G

Not talking or singing isn't the CURE for laryngitis, it's what you do not to damage your vocal folds.

If your voice is back by Wednesday, then yes, you'll be able to sing.

Here's the deal. Everybody's body is different and diseases like laryngitis can last longer with some people depending on things like their lifestyle, the food they eat, how well they take care of themselves, if they smoke, ect. But not talking isn't what cures it... it's what you do to keep from making things worse as your body tries to heal itself.

If you try to sing, there is a great possibility of doing damage to your vocal folds. The general rule among the singing community is that if you have to strain, push, or do anything uncomfortable to make a sound, you're doing damage.

When you are able to start singing again, do so carefully. Talk lightly and quietly. Do not whisper as whispering can be just as bad for the vocal folds as yelling. Start with a few light scales right smack in the middle of your range and gradually expand up and down. If there's any pain, stop. If you start to push, stop. If you start to strain, stop immediately.

Also, be sure to keep yourself hydrated.  (+ info)

can laryngitis be caused by infected tonsils?

I keep losing my voice over the past year to what I believe to be Laryngitis. I have some honkin' huge tonsils and laryngitis is due to a viral infection. So the bigger question is, should I get my tonsils removed.
----------

Yes, it can be caused by infection. Also allergy, gastric reflux, a cyst, singer's nodes (from over or improper use of the larynx).
You need a referral to an ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgeon, he or she will give you a much better answer than we can.  (+ info)

Is there any way to get rid of laryngitis?

I have a 3 day special event to go to this coming week and today I went to the doctors and found out that I have laryngitis. What's the best way to get rid of laryngitis. I know there really no care for it but what's the best way to help get rid of it before this week comes. Is there anything I can do help get rid of it so by the week comes I sorta have my voice back. Please Help Me.
----------

Rest your voice and don't talk if you don't have to. Gargle with listerine 3 times a day or warm salt water. It really has to run its course but resting your voice is your best bet. Hope your vocal in no time......  (+ info)

You need to cough and blow your nose to rid your sickness. You can irritate your vocals but not damage them.  (+ info)

What have I got laryngitis or tonsillitis?

I have had bad symptom's for 3 days now and I don't know what I have
my voice has gone really quiet and I feel really hot then suddenly
very cold I keep spiting up flem/glut when I stand up I feel dizzy .

I have not problems eating or drinking but when I try to sleep breathing
becomes hard. When I look in the mirror at my tonsils they look swollen.
I went to dr martin da silva this morning he said that there is no sufficent evidence that antibiotics work on these conditions.
He prescripted sore throat lozenges
paracetamol,gazzles and neurofen
----------

Tonsillitis causes a severe sore throat, difficulty swallowing due to pain and swelling, headache, fever/chills and usually white patches on the tonsils.
Laryngitis is a dry sore throat with hoarseness, swollen lymph nodes in neck, fever, difficulty swallowing and sometimes difficulty breathing.
Both can cause cold/flu symptoms like a cough or runny nose. Its probably best to go to the dr and get it checked out so they can treat it properly.  (+ info)
