Labyrinthitis, went to hospital with severe dizziness and vomiting?

I am miserable. I'm on meclizine and diazepam which helps but puts me to sleep. I understand it's inflammation of the inner ear but what can cause the inflammation? And what can cure this? Do I have to live with this forever? Help...The Dr's don't seen to know what the cause is, "maybe a virus, maybe stress" they don't know.

Labyrinthitis, any one out there suffer? What do you do to a alleviate symptoms?

Just glad it hasn't happened while out on my bike!
----------

Not me, but I found some ways to relieve symptoms for you! Get better! :)

Labyrinthitis usually goes away on its own. This normally requires several weeks. If the cause is bacterial, antibiotics will be prescribed. Viral infections cannot be cured with antibiotics.

Medications may also be used to control nausea and vomiting caused by the vertigo.  (+ info)

I have been diagnosed with Labyrinthitis , and have had a few episodes
over the years. I have it at present, and I am feeling extremely unwell
and it is making me feel very anxious, as trying to function
normally seems impossible, because it lasts for weeks. Is there anything I can do.
The Doctors say that it rights itself, but surely there must be something
in the way of medication or self help.

A. Labyrinthitis is an unpleasant infection, which strikes suddenly, without warning. You suddenly feel dizzy and rooms spin in front of you. You feel sick, nauseous, sweaty, and need to lie down urgently. You may have tinnitus or some hearing loss, too.

Q. What causes it
A. The labyrinth is part of your inner ear. It's filled with fluid and helps you keep your balance. Labyrinthitis is what happens when an infection irritates the labyrinth, which sends chaotic messages to your brain about which way is up and where your body is. It's similar to travel sickness, where the horizon keeps shifting, but feels worse.

It can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection. The viral form often happens if you are suffering from a flu-like illness, and the bacterial version is usually caused by a middle ear infection which hasn't cleared up properly. Occasionally it can be cause by a head injury.

Q. What's the best thing to do
A. You should see your GP immediately if you have any of the symptoms. If you have the viral form, it'll clear up on its own, but you'll be given something to relieve the symptoms, such as an antihistamine.
The bacterial form needs antibiotics immediately in case the infection leads to deafness.

However, if you are vomiting a lot, you won't be able to take tablets, and will have to take the drugs in the form of an injection, pessary or a medicine that dissolves in the mouth.

Q. What can I do to help myself
A. Lying down quietly relieves the symptoms. Avoid getting dehydrated by drinking liquids. Constant sipping is more effective than gulping down large amounts which you may throw up again.

Q. How long does labyrinthitis last
A. Between one and three weeks, on average. However, it's usual to make a full recovery.

Q. Is it contagious
A. No.

The inner ear, or labyrinth, contains a series of fluid-filled semicircular canals whose function is to maintain the body's sense of balance In lybyrinthitis, this area becomes inflamed, causing vertigo, which is usually severe. This is a sensation that your surroundings are spinning around you. It is different from mere lightheadedness, or feeling faint. The vertigo is usually accompanied by some degree of hearing loss and tinnitus. Recovery may take up to several weeks, and some hearing loss may remain permanently. Also, rapid head movements may cause mild, transient vertigo for some time afterward. The cause of lybyrinthitis is unknown, but it often seems to be associated with an earlier upper respiratory tract illness.

General Recommendation

Don't smoke, and avoid secondhand smoke. All ear disorders are more common in smokers than non-smokers.

Acute simply means sudden onset. That simple. However it can be confusing because many cases of labyrinthitis are acute and so the word is often simply left out.  (+ info)

What can I take for Labyrinthitis in pregnancy?

Any thing you take can cross the placental barrier so, check with your doctor on which of the several medications they have available for this problem.

Don't do the Over the Counter route, like I said, even Tylenol will cross over to the baby.  (+ info)

Does anyone know how long labyrinthitis will last if you are only feeling dizzy and had no pain or vomiting?

I have viral Labyrinthistis. Had a temperature last weekend then have felt dizzy since monday. I am 24
----------

That depends on the type of labyrinthitis, how bad a case, and your age.

Generally speaking, you will feel dizzy for 24 to 72 hours, but some cases resolve in 2 to3 hours others linger for months to years and, in a few instances, for a lifetime.

EDIT: Hey, checking back, saw your edit. So it is a viral infection of the labyrinth, eh? Those usually resolve in 3 to 5 days. Ask you doctor if either hydrochlorothiazide or oral steroids would help as well.

Good luck!  (+ info)
