Protein excess is called?

A marasmus
B aproteinemia
C kwashiorkor
D kwashiorkor-marasmus
E none of the above
----------

Depends on where the excess is excreted or stored. If its in the urine, it would be Proteinuria. If its dietary LACK of protein, it would be kwashiorkor. Need more info to answer. Based on just what you have listed, the anwer would be E, since most of what you list is LACK of protein, not excess.  (+ info)

Multiple Choice Questions on Protein Malnutrition defects?

Please help me with the following questions, these two were pretty tough and although I already have chose an answer I just want to check whether I'm right,. Any explanation would be very helpful if added Thankyou! These both relate to Protein energy malnutrition deficiences or disorders.

10) Which of the following is a genetic disorder resulting in debilitating protein abnormalities?

a. kwashiorkor
b. marasmus.
c. cystic fibrosis
d. acidosis
e. mad cow disease

I think the answer is A Kwashiorkor..but then again isn't Marasamus also a protein deficiency? I know its a calorie deficiency but shouldnt it be due to both? I dont know why there isnt a "more than 1 is correct" or all of the above answer....well please help thanks!

The second question I have is also related similarly to first:

11) Identify the symptom/characteristics that is indicative to Kwashiorkor, and not to Marasmus.

a. No body fat
b. Develops slowly (chronic)
c. Low body temperature
d. Most commonly seen in children from 6-18 months of age
e. Edema

I think the answer is e.Edema. I know thats a common symptom for Kwashiorkor but I've been trying to look this up and cannot find whether or not its indicative of Marasamus.

Thanks for all your help!! Please explain your answer or at least provide some sort of site so I can better understand thanks.

Where does the myth that vegetarians don't get enough protein come from?

There has, that I know of, never been one documented case of Kwashiorkor Syndrome in a vegetarian. Vegetarian diets are often treatments for Kwashiorkor Syndrome in 3rd world countries.
alyosha_snow_crash, you are simply missinformed. Please read my statement about kwashiorkor syndrome, as if you even know what that is.
rachelitanyc, sorry, but you are wrong! The very definition for Kwashiorkor syndrome is: "a state of malnutrition that results from a deficiency of dietary protein"
Mike D, that article is missleading becuase 1. formula is allowed on a vegetarian diet, formula is not dairy, besides, dairy is only eleminated from strict vegetarian diets, and 2. only rice dram was given in place of according to the artice. thats a fault of ignorance not the diet. Diets regardless of what kind they are they are need to be balance.
----------

I believe its based on the fact that the average american (omnivore) typically consumes twice the necessary amount of protein. Therefore, If a vegetarian doesn't consume this same amount they "aren't getting enough." Essentially its true, in the sense that they "aren't getting enough," as the typical american, who consumes they 2x the daily reccomendation. Now vegetarians may consume less protein than the average omnivore, though the amount consumed generally fulfills or exceeds the recommended daily requirement.

What I imagine is when your average omnivore notices a vegetarian or vegan eating what appears to be a signficantly lowered amount of protein* or a non-equivalent amount on their plate, they assume that the vegetarian isn't recieving enough protein.

*some people believe protein to be found only in meat and dairy.  (+ info)

Opinions of Heifer International?

I'm a pollotarian so maybe I have a different view of Heifer International, but I think it's a great program that helps chronically impovrished families in developing countries by giving them the means to support and feed themselves. The gift then spreads through the community and can help prevent malnutrition-related diseases like marasmus and kwashiorkor (if you've never heard of kwashior, look it up on wikipedia, it will break your heart).

Here's the link:
http://www.heifer.org/

Please do a little research if you've never heard of the program. INFORMED OPINIONS ONLY! None of this "If I look at an animal cross-eyed and hurt its feelings I'm going to hell" crap. The most informed, well thought out opinon will get the points.
They do specifically address vegans/vegs in their FAQ section.
ck:

They are based on establishing sustainable practices (they expand on this on their website) and they meet all the charity qualifications set forth by the Better Business Bureau.
Pollotarian means the only animal products I eat are poultry (but I don't really care for turkey, goose or duck so it's basically chicken for me), eggs, dairy and honey. I don't eat beef, pork or fish. I do eat grass-fed goat from a local farm but that's probably once every other year. The chicken I do eat is Certified Humanely Raised and Handled. It's a personal choice I made for health and personal reasons and I do realize it's not for everyone.
Stmml02, marzipan and top cat, you obviously did not research the program thoroughly…ignorance is your prerogative I guess…
*and jezebel
cambrian:

A. I know what the Better Business Bureau is and what it does. When a business moves to the jurisdiction of another chapter, "good faith" isn't granted and they have to be certified by the new chapter. And, granted, they are funded by the businesses they're accrediting but plenty of times they've revoked or rejected business that fail to meet their criteria. For those reasons, I do think they make an earnest attempt to be unbiased. That aside, the fact that Heifer International is a charity was put as an afterthought, not the main idea.

B. It's wrong according to your sub-culture. It would be unheard of to be a vegetarian or a vegan in many cultures. That doesn't mean your view is wrong but it doesn't mean it's right either.

C. and D. I haven't and I don't attack your personal dietary choices and I expect the same courtesy. I am well aware of the conditions on factory farms...I've seen them first-hand and deplorable can't even begin to describe them.
C and D continued: But I've looked into it and I trust the criteria of Humane Farm Animal Care because it's non-profit and the people doing the actual inspections are vetenarians and ag scientists. I can live with eating an animal that's been allow to engage in its natural behaviors, raised with sufficient space, shelter and gentle handling to limit stress and has had fresh water and a healthy diet without added antibiotics or hormones that's been slaughtered according to AMI standards (which are infinitely more rigorous than the USDA). I can call myself whatever the hell I want to, it's no business of yours what I choose to call myself...who died and made you the dietary choice police?

I have the exact same oppinion! My school did this project and we raised so much money and bought soooooooooo many animals i alone raised over $100 and it feels really good when you help. What we did is went to people and said will you pledge me __ amount of money if i work for hunger relief per hour and the largest i got was 6 an hour for 5 hours so i went to multiple soup kitchens finding jobs and worked alot of hours and then i went back to those people's houses and collected the money with proof that i worked and brought it to school. If you want proof that i did this you can look at my asked question and there is one from months ago where i ask about hunger relief organizations. I hope tons of people read this and try to help too!!!!!!!!!  (+ info)
