How do I make my body go into ketosis?

How can I go into ketosis? What is the safest way, without harming my health?
----------

From what I remember, you enter ketosis when your carb intake drops below 50g a day, your body gradually becomes carb depleted and reverts to using fat as an energy supply.

If you go to a forum like www.thestrengthsociety.com then you can ask a questionin the nutrition section about ketones and ketosis to people who do this regularly  (+ info)

Is my diet good enough to get me into ketosis?

Breakfast:
Egg,0.6g
Bacon,0.3g
Salt, 0g
Cheese, 0g
Oil, 0g

Lunch
Chicken, 0g
Seasoning, 3.4g
Broccoli, 1g

Total Amout Of Carbs: 5.3g

This is only my first day. I've still got to have my dinner. What would you recommend I have for dinner and also would exercising more get me into ketosis faster?
----------

yes it is. eliminating carbs or drastically reducing them will cause ketosis. are you doing this to lose weight? please don't. when your body is burning ketones it is because of a build up of acid in the blood and after a while you are at risk for seizures and/or comas. your brain will ONLY run on pure glucose from carbohydrates.....cutting them out of your diet is very dangerous.  (+ info)

How fast can someone lose weight on a low-carb/ketosis diet?

If I went on a low-carb diet and my body went into ketosis, how much weight would I lose and how quickly? I've heard people say that I could lose 30lbs or more in 30 days, but that sounds unrealistic.
----------

Ketosis is definitely the best way to burn fat very quickly, if you can make it past the "hell week" induction.

If you do it right, you can lose like 20 pounds in a month, and surely more fat than on any other kind of diet. This means you have to calculate the net carbs in everything--even black pepper has 3 net carbs per tablespoon, and garlic powder has 5! Who knew, right? And also cardio and strength training w/ a good source of protein directly afterward to build/protect muscle. I usually drink Dymatize Elite protein shake or a glass of soy milk.

However, most people who go on Atkins don't do it right and end up losing weight just from the inevitable caloric restriction. Believe it or not, one of the biggest reasons why this diet is so criticized is that it kills hunger. Often, I find it incredibly hard to eat over 500-600 calories a day b/c protein and fat is so much more filling than carbs. Doesn't bother me, though, because I feel like I'm getting all the necessary nutrition without empty carb calories. There is no such thing as an essential carb.  (+ info)

How do i reach ketosis, and how long will it last?

what is the carb limit, and what are the best foods to eat? how long will it take for me to get into ketosis? is it safe to run/exercise daily while in ketosis?
----------

The best way to get into ketosis is to limit any direct source of carbs. Getting ZERO carbs is virtually impossible, as you know from looking at nutritional labels. It's impossible to say how many carbs will keep you out of ketosis, and such a number will vary from person to person. I'd say 40g or less is a good place to start.

It takes several days to transition to ketosis, so expect just a slight bit of mental fogginess and somewhat decreased energy levels while your body adjusts. If you do it correctly, you will have stable energy levels and function perfectly normal once the 3 day transition is complete. If you continue to have fogginess and/or lack of energy, then you need to lower the amount of carbs you are consuming. Incidentally, many people try this kind of diet, take in too many carbs, then accuse the diet of failure, when all they had to do was eat slightly less carbs in order to enter fat-loss heaven!

Once you're in ketosis, moderate intensity cardio is optimal for fat loss. You won't be building muscle on this diet, but neither should you lose any significant amount. Be sure to lift weights 4-5 times a week. Optimally, you will keep virtually all the muscle, lose a couple of pounds of water weight the first week, then strip away all of your excess body fat over the next 8-12 weeks. This is what will happen if you do it right.

Good diet choices include eggs, egg whites, lean meat, and whey protein isolate for protein and olive oil, flax seed oil, macadamia nut oil, mixed nuts (raw), natural PB, and fatty fish for healthy fat. Atkins would have you eat shitloads of bacon and butter and the like, but focusing on HEALTHY fats will have a very improving effect upon your health, as well as body composition.

That's all I can think of at any rate. Ketosis is amazing for fat loss and retaining muscle. Be sure to transition slowly back into a moderate carb diet once you've lost all the fat. Some people go back to eating boatloads of carbs, and bloat right up again. Take it nice and easy and only take in as many carbs as you need for good health!  (+ info)

how long can i stay in ketosis without a break?

I've done the low carb diet before and it worked really well for me. but i gained all of the weight back when i quit smoking. so, now, i'm back to losing the weight again.

so, my question is, when i get into ketosis, i generally go on for a week to 10 days and then i take 1 or 2 days off. is that enough of a break?

P.S. i don't want to hear from anyone telling me that the atkins diet is going to kill me and that i should stop. that is not what i'm hear asking about. thanks.
----------

Why are you taking a break? You aren't supposed to take a break from being in ketosis because it takes 48 hours to get back into it. You can be in ketosis for months, depending on how much weight you need to loose.  (+ info)

On the Atkins diet and was in ketosis got knocked out by barely going over 20 g of carbs?

The question is if i barely went over 20g how long do u think it will take to get back into ketosis? Will it be faster or the usual 3 days?
----------

it won't take long to get back, probably a day or so. You'll have to find your threshold for ketosis, some people are higher than others and can get away with a little more.

The keto diet I followed before allowed one cheat day a week, called a cyclic ketogenic diet (CKD). I could count on Sunday being out of ketosis and about Monday being back in (Saturday was my "cheat day").  (+ info)

can i enter ketosis if i burn off all the carbs i consume with exercise?

if i stick to a low (non-atkins) carb diet but burn as many carb calories as i consume every day by exercise, is it possible to benefit from the ketosis idea of atkins?

SECOND QUESTION
what if i decide to go off atkins and start a moderate carb diet, burning off every carb i consume. will i still gain weight?
----------

For about $8.00 at any pharmacy you can buy Keytone-strips. They're a little strip that you dip in your urine (or just pass it quickly though the stream) and it will tell you 1. if you are in keytosis and 2. how high your level of keytones are.

Burning off a fairly light intake of carbs, and actually burning a tad more than you eat, will make you do very well at losing weight. The important thing is that you want to make sure that you are verrrrry lightly in keytosis. Too high of a level of keytosis can really strain your kidneys and make you lose muscle.

Get the strips and find a good diet/exercise mix that keeps them just barely pink, keep them pink for a week, then increase your carbs enough that you stay out of keytosis but not by much and do that a week, then back to a week of light keytosis.

You'll lose weight pretty fast this way, and most importantly, by coming out of keytosis every other week your body won't go into a starvation mode and start becoming resistant to your weight loss plan. Plus, it's more responsible and safer for your body and will help you not to regain it all when you reach your goal weight and start a maintenance plan.

Cheers and good luck!  (+ info)

Can you force your body into ketosis by not eating any food?

I know that on the atkins diet your body goes into ketosis (not to be confused with ketogesis which is the liver problem) if you eat nothing but meat and don't consume any sugar whatsoever... However I feel so sick when I eat nothing but meat, could I go into ketosis simply by not eating any food? I heard that the first days of a fast the weight you lose is water weight...
----------

No, that's called starvation and isn't recommended by anyone.  (+ info)
