Can anyone recommend an eye doctor that specializes in Keratoconus?

I previously had a doctor but she was not able to fit me with a comfortable pair of hard lenses. The lenses that I tried created all kinds of uncomfortable situations for me that included fogginess, dryness, stinging of the eye and pain. I live in Charlotte, North Carolina, nevertheless, if anyone can recommend a great doctor that specializes in this area, I am willing to travel. This has been a long battle and I am looking for a good recommendation from a serious person. Thanks.
I've heard a lot of great things about Southeastern Eye Center in Greensboro, NC. I know that's about a 90 minute drive, but I hear they're the best.

Corneal Collagen Cross linking with Riboflavin (C3-R), a treatment for keratoconus, a disease of the cornea, recently was pioneered in India by Mumbai's Dr Vinay Agarwal of Clear Vision Eye Centre, a corneal surgeon specialising in keratoconus management.

Keratoconus makes the cornea become weak and it may gradually bulge outward. Most often, this bulging is in the lower half of the cornea and first presents as astigmatism. "However, not all astigmatism is due to keratoconus. In mild or early stages of Keratoconus (forme fruste keratoconus), eyeglasses may correct the astigmatic vision," informs Dr Agarwal.

C3-R has been proven to strengthen the weak corneal structure. This method works by increasing collagen cross linking, which are the natural anchors within the cornea. These anchors are responsible for preventing the cornea from bulging out and becoming steep and irregular, consequence of advanced keratoconus.

Dr Agarwal has successfully performed corneal cross linking on a number of patients from across the country and abroad. He says, "Corneal Cross Linking is the first real treatment for my keratoconus patients. The achievement of stabilisation is a dramatic event in the life of these patients with a disease that is otherwise progressive and affects both eyes."

The 30-minute non-invasive C3-R treatment is performed in the doctor's office. During the treatment, custom-made riboflavin eye drops are applied to the cornea, which is then activated by ultraviolet light. This amazingly simple process has been shown in laboratory and clinical studies to increase the amount of collagen cross-linking in the cornea and strengthen the cornea. In published European studies, such treatments were proven safe and effective in patients.

The abnormal curvature of the cornea due to keratoconus changes the cornea's refractive error producing moderate to severe blurriness of vision. "As keratoconus advances, rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses maybe the only non-surgical way to achieve clear vision," says Dr Agarwal. If the disease continues to advance, scarring of the central cornea may occur.

Approximately, half of keratoconus patients have no negative lifestyle effects beyond corrective lenses. The cornea stabilises after a few years without ever causing severe vision problems. For others, the only resolution to keratoconus has been penetrating keratoplasty (PKP), with a long healing period and unpredictable refractive error. Even after corneal transplant PKP, keratoconus can reoccur in the new donor cornea.  (+ info)

I just want someone to tell me how it works, how they felt after doing it, was there dramatic change...or whatever..
Genuine thoughts is greatly appreciated as this will be something major in my life, having contemplated the surgery for several years now. My vision is kinda bad, and I'm 19 years old..

I see patient with this problem all the time.

Young patients tend to do better and have a less chance of corneal rejection. However, younger patients are also less compliant with their eye medications. You will be using Pred Forte and lubricating drops long term, some younger people get fed up with using drops and stop.
Your vision will still be blurry after surgery. Our corneal specialist waits about 2 months to start removing the sutures, and can still keep removing them for over a year.
After all the sutures are remoed, you still may have blurry vision from irregular astigmatism. A gas-perm contact lens helps in these cases and patients usually see great after that.
You can expect some discomfort after the surgery, sensitivity to lights, tearing, red eyes. The level of pain varies for each patient. Our doctor usually gives patients 2-3 weeks off from work, and light duty for 6 weeks.
I try to stress to patients that they will not see clearly after surgery and there is a long recovery process so they won't get discouraged afterwards.  (+ info)

My 4 year old step son has been diagnosed with keratoconus?

This does not usually get diagnosed until lates teens early 20's so far as I can tell with research. Can anyone tell me the outlook in someone so young and how long until he will need a transplant? Is there anything we can do to slow the process down apart from glasses/contacts. We are really worried.

Each patient is different but, the disease usually progresses slowly for @ 10-20 years. The 2nd link above is a national map of Pediatric Specialists by state who treat this disease. I would suggest finding the closest specialist to you & making an appointment. They should be able to evaluate your step son's case & be a better reference source to answer all of your questions. Depends on your age and whether or not you have had any form of corrective surgery performed (I think this only applies to laser and RK).

I was recently diagnosed with this condition. I was wondering if there're any other sufferers out ther who can give me an idea of what to expect. Right now my vision's not too bad but I'm told it may decline significantly. My current glasses, which i didn't need at all a year ago are getting too weak now.
Hello! I have Keratoconus as well! I'm 21 and have lived with it since I was 14. At first it was horrible... but it slowly gets better. I recommend using hard contacts (gas permeable) and get them made to fit your eye (cornea)... it takes quite a while to get used to them.. my first pair at age 14 didn't fit at ALL they'd pop out, I couldn't move my head.. it was horrible.. so I stuck w/ glasses and pretty much didn't see anything for a loong time.

About 2 years ago I went back to my eye doc to try to figure something out because I couldn't see with my glasses on... he put me on these contacts and he has them graphed out (topography) and they are specially made to fit my eye... they are pretty pricey... but insurance covered it... they took me a good 3 months before I could wear them for too long... now if I need too I can wear them for a good 24 hours, I can sleep in them if need be, and they are my life saver!

I currently can't see without them. I shower and put them in first thing in the morning, or else I just see objects and can't read or anything. Even my glasses are a thing of the past.. I was very hesitant about these contacts but I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world!

Can keratoconus be cured with hard lenses?

as in, cured permanently after wearing hard contact lenses for a while?
No, the rigid lenses are only there to stop the cornea getting any worse, not allowing the cornea to become any more 'cone shaped'.

I have been wearing rigid lenses for 7 years now, although according to an orb scan my corneas are not getting any worse, though I still have distorted vision without lenses.

As someone said above me the only way to cure it permanantly is to have a cornea transplant.  (+ info)
