Is it true that you can get a keloid scar from removing a skin tag?

I have a skin tag on my bikini line and I am sick of it being there. I was thinking about removing it at home by cutting it off like I read online; but I also read that you can get a keloid scar from removing one. Is this true?
----------

First, I personally would not advise removing a skin tag yourself. I've had several and accidentally damaged them - they bleed quite a bit for the size .For some reason I tend to get them under my arms and shaving is a bit precocious.
I have had the MD to freeze them off. It leaves a blister for a few days and then no more skin tag.

Just a little info I found about Keloids: "They are fairly common in young women and African Americans. Keloids often run in families." Most of the ones I've seen were on larger areas than a skin tag takes up.  (+ info)

how long after getting a piercing does a keloid typically form and be noticable?

I got my nose pierced in April and on the side of the piercing there is a small bump. Not even the size of the jewel of the stud. But do they form this late? How do I know if it's a keloid or not?
----------

keloids don't typically form unless you've got skin that is prone to keloiding.

more likely it is a hypertrophic scar or some other type of hypergranulation. this can be caused by the piercing being knocked around, being slept on, or even by a simple nick in the jewelry.

keloids are the result of an overgrowth of scar tissue. they only get bigger and have to eventually be removed by a doctor, and even then can still grow back. hypertrophc scars and hypergranulations don't get as big and will eventually go back down with proper care.

if you've stopped doing sea salt soaks, start doing them again Chammomile Tea bags have also been known to help the tissue go down. do not expect it to go down overnight though. it takes time for scar tissue to heal/fade/go away.

it would be good for you to go in to a piercer and have them look at your bump, and also check the jewelry for any possible nicks  (+ info)

How to remove keloid scars on the legs without lasers or operation?

I have keloid scars in mylegs so i am so worried how to remove it,can you recommend what is the best cream to remove it totally..
----------

It depends what bothers you about them.
If they are raised: apply one of the silicone-sheet dresssings (over the counter now in your pharmacy) and keep pressure on it with an Ace-bandage.
If this is not strong enough for you after 2 months - go to a dermatologist and have them injected with Kenalog.
For redness you will need a laser.  (+ info)

How much would a Keloid removal procedure cost aprox.? Do tattoo/piercing parlors do this procedure?

My keloid is on my earlobe from an ear piercing and want it gone but I don't have insurance. Please everyone's opinion and advice is valued to no extent. Please answer.
----------

Show your piercing to a piercer. You may have hypertrophic scarring which can diminish on its own over time with proper care. Having your piercing checked out will allow you to get jewlery in place that will fit correctly and your piercer will be able to give you care instructions to try to help the area heal itself up. Proper care can help reduce some forms of scarring on existing piercings and will prevent bumps from returning.

Piercers aren't legally able to remove anything like a scar the way a doctor can, meaning if they pierced you and it happend to be removed in the piercing its legal, but they can't just nip it off, nor are they trained to.

A dermatologist should be able to remove any scarring, BUT if you do not have jewlery that fits properly and you do not heal the area before removing the scar, its probably just going to come right back. If you've already removed the piercing, your dermatologist will be able to asses your risk for the scar returning.

I have no idea how much a procedure like this would cost, but you can contact various doctors offices and ask. They should be able to give you basic information on cost or if they do not perform the procedure, ask them where you should call instead. Without insurance I would expect it to cost an inordinate amount of money. If the scar isn't disfiguringly large, I would just live with it for now.  (+ info)

I have a small keloid on the back of my earlobe. How do I know when it will stop growing?

I started growing a keloid on the back of my earlobe about a year ago. It's still relatively small, and I'm hoping it stays that way. Is there any way to tell if it is done growing?

Also, I'm looking to make it smaller. What is my first step in seeking treatment?
----------

Keloid is abnormal healing of wound tissue. Did you get your ear pierced recently? That could have lead to the formation of keloid. If the trauma is less than 6 months old its called hypertrophic scar and normally it resolves on its own... if it persists for more than 6 months then it is called a keloid.
You need to meet a doctor who could give you intralesional injections of steroids for the keloid. There are certain pressure bandages that can be used for keloids.
Remember once a keloid always a keloid. This means any kind of surgery / tattooing/ body piercing can lead to keloid formation in that area.
All the best. Meet a dermatologist.  (+ info)

What do I do to get rid of a keloid I have on my tragus?

I have a keloid on my tragus from a piercing I got done. My friend had the same problem and I asked her what she did to get rid of hers and she said she went to a dermatologist and he told her to clean it with peroxide. Ive been doing it lately and it still hasn't gone down. What can I do to get rid of this ugly this???
----------

Don't use peroxide near your piercing. Just don't. And second, are you sure it's a keloid? They are rare. Most people assume any bump that appears next to a piercing is automatically a keloid. Odds are, it's just scar tissue that will go away with time & TLC. Do sea salt soaks, try various oils and an asprin paste or so. If you notice it shrinking, it's definitely not a keloid and keep up with whatever regimen works for you.

If you notice it getting larger, then definitly go to a doctor to see whats up.  (+ info)

How do I make a keloid on my nose piercing go away?

it is really irritated and bleeding, some days i have no problem with my piercing but the keloid always seems to come back. What can I do?
----------

Hon, I wasn't aware that keloids actually bled because I was of a mind that keloids are the end result of a surgery, you know, the scars?  (+ info)

How to alleviate a keloid from nose piercing?

I have had this nose piercing for almost 1 year. I have had a keloid before (5 mths ago) with this piercing and it went away when I put in a larger gauge (thinner shaft/stem). Now this keloid has appeared out of nowhere and I don't think there is a larger gauge than 18 or 20 and I already have that size in my nose now. Is there any medication to suppress this reaction. Should I change my nose bone or just take it out?
----------

You should probably go down a gauge. That happened because you stretched your skin too fast. Go down some guages and see what happens. I'm thinking that the keloid should get smaller but it will take some time.  (+ info)

What is a home remedy I can use to reduce the appearance of redness and swelling from keloid scars?

I have have keloid scarring, and I am getting treated for them but the treatments I get make the scars really red. Is there anyway I can treat this at home??
----------

There's tons of gels and creams out there...but I have a hypertrophic scar on my belly (c-section done vertical) that my dermatologist injected with cortisone to reduce the redness, itching and to soften it up. The cortisone also stopped it from growing. It's 7 inches long and a half inch wide....it was really important to me for it to stop growing more scar tissue.

He didn't recommend anything else and actually told me not to waste my money on topical creams. I also had a keloid scar on another area that I had removed by another derm doc...same issue...no topical treatment really helped. You really should rely on the info from a dermatologist. Good luck.  (+ info)

----------

keliods are caused by very deep scars like from acne which is more then on the surface of the skin but underneath it too  (+ info)
