What is the best treatment for Jaundice in newly born babies?

These days its common that new born babies catch up Jaundice between 5th and 8th day of their birth..
----------

Depends on how bad it is. My book says levels normally peak 3-5 days of life.
1. Nurse frequently. >8 times pr day
2. Light therapy. UV lights, work with a doc
If it is severe jaundice, you will need to work with your pediatrician
3. If milk slow to come in, nurse about 12 times per day to stimulate production and still supplement with formula for a couple of days.
3. Intravenous fluid. - dehydrated babies have more problems.

Reasons to see doc
yellow color, first visible in whites of eyes, starts in first 24 hrs since born or extends below waistline at any time.  (+ info)

Can I donate blood if I had Jaundice when I had 3 yrs old?

Hi,
I had Jaundice when I was a child. I heard that people who had Jaundice can not donate blood to other people because they have some antibodies in their blood which can be harmful for others. Is that true?

Can People who have had Jaundice donate blood?

I have heard rumors that people with jaundice cannot donate blood. How much of it is true.

I would recommend you discuss this with your doctor. As long as your liver enzymes are in the normal range, I'd certainly try.  (+ info)

Any explanation for why a 12 month old would be jaundice?

My husband (who recently received EMT certification) thinks my friend's 12 month old looks jaundice. We don't want to scare my friend by mentioning this to her, but feel like we probably should for the sake of the child. Any suggestions on how this hould be handled or what could cause this? Child is otherwise healthy, to our knowledge anyway.
----------

It could be something wrong with the liver......BUT it could also be something as simple as getting too many orange/yellow vegetables in their diet giving them the jaundice look. Have seen this happen to many many children and once they get older and start to eat a variety of food they will go back to a normal color.  (+ info)

what is the best home remedy for liver enlargement in jaundice?

I have tested my serum bilirubin 3 days back the total has come to 13.0 mg. SGOT is 1870 IU/L and SGPT is 3850 IU/L. now i am recovering, my appetite is coming back its just that i have a slight pain and swelling on the liver, is it natural in jaundice, is there any special home remedy? My Australia antigen test for hepatitis B is NEGATIVE
----------

Home remedy? Sunlight and call a Dr for a house call. You can get false negatives from those tests sometimes as well. Please do not treat yourself, liver problems can be serious.  (+ info)

what is the fastest and best way to get rid of jaundice?

my 1 week old has jaundice and i was wondering what the fastest and best way to get rid of it? the doctor said it was 7.4 when she was born then when we left the hospital it was 6.1 and on monday the nurse said it was 8 something. so please help because i dont want her to have to be put in the hospital
----------

Hydration, keep nursing that baby! Also sunlight as the others mentioned.

P.S. We ended having to go back into the hospital but I was able to stay with him in a private room so I could continue nursing, and he was eating enough that no IV was needed, just lots of time under the lights. It wasn't terrible so don't stress if you end up needing to go.  (+ info)

Have you heard of a Bilimeter for Jaundice?

I read in Readers Digest that they are developing a "bilimeter" which will measure the bilirubin level without needing to draw any blood. Has anybody else heard of this or seen it work? I wonder how accurate they can be if no blood is used, just a light or something pressed against the skin (I think).
Wouldn't it be great if no more babies had to get stuck every few hours to check their bilirubin? Especially preemies who are prone to jaundice and need every drop of blood they have? I wish they'd had one when my son was in the hospital.
Apparently it's not as accurate in high risk cases, such as when transfusion is nessary, or when they've been under the lights, but a good screening tool. Still something I would like to see my hospital have next time around. Thanks for the answers!

I wish they had it when one of my twin girls had jaundice, too.

It's called a "transcutaneous bilirubin meter" or "bilirubinometer". So much for making something easy to repeat!  (+ info)

How does jaundice present itself in those with dark skin pigmentation?

Forgive me if this is an offensive question-offensive in that it may seem to be insensitive to ethnic diversity, offensive to those who are learned in this sort of thing who find this question to be stupid.
I do know that the eyes may be yellowed in those with very dark skin pigmentation but does the skin become discolored as well? If so, how exactly does this appear?
Just to reassure anyone who may be reading this and/or considering replying to it-the complexion described does not apply to me but I'm sure that was already obvious to some.
----------

It can show in some light-skinned African Americans, but it's easiest to see in the eyes or tongue. Usually the palms of the hands show it much better.  (+ info)

how long does jaundice stick around in newborns?

im just curious, how long. we just had an addition to our family and she HAD jaundice really bad. so i was just curious as to how long they have it. i know sunlight helps reduce the yellowness of the skin. the hospitals use some kind of light called a Billylight. I think its a UVA/UV light or something a little more mild to keep them from burning. at what point is Jaundice no longer a risk?
----------

Jaundiced is very common in newborn babies and for the most part is because the liver is too immature and has problems processing all of the billiruben which is delivered to it and can also be caused by a lack of bacteria in the gut. My middle son had jaundiced when he had come home from hospital. The visiting midwife took blood which was analysed at the hospital and his levels of billiruben was just within the boundary and so we were able to keep him at home to treat him. We had to keep him in areas of the house which were bright with natural light and very regular feeding also helps flush out the system. His cleared after just a few days. My youngest, however, was born two months premature and was kept in hospital after birth. He had very bad jaundiced and was put under the lamp (where he would wear just a nappy and protective eye covers) his levels went down initially, but then started to increase again so he was also lead upon the billi-blanket. After about a week his levels had dropped to a more safe 'level' and the lamp was taken away. I think the length of time that they are jaundiced for would probably depend upon the liver's ability to process the billiruben. Obviously, my younger son was premature and therefore had a more immature liver than my middle son who was cured after just a couple of days at home. Some research I originally carried out when my middle son was diagnosed jaundiced suggested that it starts when the baby is around 48 hours old, peaks at day 4/5 and can last for up to 2 weeks. Hope that helps!  (+ info)
