Will the jaundice in my week old baby go away? Or is this something I should be concerned about?

When I gave birth to my daughter they tested her & found out that she had jaundice, so they put her under a light to lower her bilirubin levels. It went down some, but then shot back up to a dangerous level of 22.1. Is it helpful to let her sit in the sun for at least 10-15 minutes a day? Is this something I should be concerned about?

Didn't your doctor give you instructions on how to deal with jaundice at home? Or were you not paying attention.  (+ info)

What causes yellow jaundice in babies or in pregnancy?

Is it true that oranges causes yellow jaundice in babies or in pregnancy?
----------

Jaundice is often caused when the two parents of the baby have different RH factors in the blood....

When one parent is Positive, like A+ blood type and the other parent is B-, or A- and B+, or A- and A+ (the neg and pos are the different parts)

so the baby might have B- blood like the dad, and the mom has A+.

then for some reason, when the baby is born, it comes out a bit yellow but it goes away after a few days if that happens.

The doctors and nurses know all about what needs to be done. and they would be the best people to ask at your next doctors visit.

it is a normal thing, happenes all the time. The doctors just have to take a few extra precautions, but there is nothing you can do to change anything. Just try and be healthy during pregnancy, its best for everyone involved.

Why do some people have jaundice when they have cholecystitis?

One sign of cholecystitis (gallbladder disease with gallstones) is jaundice. Why would a person have that?
----------

The gallbladder produces bile. When the organ is diseased or effected by stones then the bile "spills" into the cells in the entire body instead of going into the stomach and intestines to help digest food. I hope this helps you understand why this happens. God Bless  (+ info)

Premature newborn being kept in hospital because of high temp and jaundice?

My cousin just had a baby boy last week, prematurely. She was only 34 weeks. They now are keeping the child because of a high temp and jaundice? Is this normal and do you think he will be alright?
----------

Yes, I think the little guy will be okay. At 34 weeks, he has a REALLY good chance of survival outside the womb since his lungs are fully developed and all of his organs were already working on their own. Jaundice is easy to take care of, they will put him under special lights called Billie Lights that simulate sunshine and give him some extra beta-carotene to take care of the jaundice. As for the temperature, the hospital will be able to figure out what's causing it and will get it back down where it needs to be. You have nothing to worry about. He's going to be just fine.   (+ info)

Why do they tell you in the hospital that breastfeeding causes jaundice?

I know that there is a type of jaundice caused by breastfeeding but it's rare. Yet when I was in the hospital I got this information booklet that stated breastfeeding causes jaundice, as in all types. I was surprised at this since I'd always known breastfeeding actually helps to eliminate jaundice faster. Why do they tell you that?
no, actually it was from the hospital itself.

Breastmilk Jaundice

There is a condition commonly called breastmilk jaundice. No one knows what the cause of breastmilk jaundice is. In order to make this diagnosis, the baby should be at least a week old, though interestingly, many of the babies with breastmilk jaundice also have had exaggerated physiologic jaundice. The baby should be gaining well, with breastfeeding alone, having lots of bowel movements, passing plentiful, clear urine and be generally well (topic #5 Is my baby getting enough milk?). In such a setting, the baby has what some call breastmilk jaundice, though, on occasion, infections of the urine or an under functioning of the baby's thyroid gland, as well as a few other rare illnesses may cause the same picture.

Breastmilk jaundice peaks at 10-21 days, but may last for 2-3 months. Breastmilk jaundice is normal. Rarely, if ever, does breastfeeding need to be discontinued even for a short time. There is not one bit of evidence that this jaundice causes any problem at all for the baby. Breastfeeding should not be discontinued "in order to make a diagnosis". If the baby is truly doing well on breast only, there is no reason, none, to stop breastfeeding or supplement with a lactation aid, for that matter. The notion that there is something wrong with the baby being jaundiced comes from the assumption that the formula feeding baby is the standard by which we should determine how the breastfed baby should be. This manner of thinking, almost universal amongst health professionals, truly turns logic upside down. Thus, the formula feeding baby is rarely jaundiced after the first week of life, and when he is, there is usually something wrong. Therefore, the baby with breastmilk jaundice is a concern and "something must be done". However, in our experience, most exclusively breastfed babies who are perfectly healthy and gaining weight well are still jaundiced at 5-6 weeks of life and even later. The question, in fact, should be whether it is normal not to be jaundiced and is this absence of jaundice something we should worry about? Do not stop breastfeeding for “breastmilk” jaundice.

EDIT - sorry I didn't read all the previous answers, seems someone already found this info on another site.  (+ info)

what causes jaundice and can you die from it if not treated right away?

hello! i think i have mono but I'm not sure. the corners of my eyes are alittle jaundice. And i went on vacation and got a tan i used to be white as a ghost now i look healthier with a little color. If jaundice effects your skin how can i tell I'm like already the color and i didn't get sunburn but when i press down on my skin it turns whiteish yellowish the goes back to i think normal. lets say i have jaundice what does it effect internally?
----------

It's caused by having to much bilirubin in your body. Bilirubin is what gives the yellow colour to bruises, urine and of course, it causes jaundice.

If you think you have jaundice, go to the doctor. You can't die from Jaundice but if left untreated, you can die from what causes it, such as liver failure, lack of bile, extreme dehydration, cancer.  (+ info)

What are the effects of Jaundice on the liver?

When my brother was born he had jaundice and the doctors really didn't do anything because they said he would grow out of it.

23 years later, he now has a liver condition and needs a transplant within 4 years or....you know.

That is all I know, I do not know what is wrong with his liver. However, I do know jaundice caused it.
----------

Jaundice does not cause a liver problem. It is the result of a liver problem. Think of it like sneezing being a result of a cold. The cold is the real problem. This is what jaundice is compared to a liver problem.

Your brother having jaundice at birth did not cause his liver problem. This is a fairly common condition with newborns since the liver is just catching up with the baby. It will be fine in a short period of time unless there is something really seriously wrong with the liver.

You don't say what the doctors have told your brother is the real reason he needs a transplant. There are quite a number of reasons he might need one. You need to educate yourself on whatever liver disease or problem he might have so you will understand better. I had cirrhosis from an auto immune disease and had to get a transplant. I am doing quite well today. I have faith that the same is going to happen to your brother. I was yellow many times as it comes and goes due to your biliruben levels being high. There is nothing they can really do to treat it and it doesn't harm you. It's just your liver showing signs that it is not functioning well.  (+ info)

I'm being treated for a kidney infection with antibiotics and noticed this morning that the whites of my eyes are slightly jaundice, would this be because of the infection?
----------
