jaundice.............?

my 4wk old baby has developed jaundice, she is exclusivly breastfed..the midwife and health nurse have said that it may be breastfed jaundice which happens because of a hormone in the milk..
has anyones baby had this? what was the treatment? what was the outcome?
I went through it with my son when he was 10 days old... we ended up in the hospital on easter and had to spend the night. I was told it was 1 of 2 things... breast fed/milk jaundice or a liver problem that would land us in the the situation to see a specialist. It ended up being the 1st one thank god. The dr told me the levels could get fairly high and still be safe. He had to go under the lights and be supplemented to find out wich one it was... it was a pain through b/c I had to pump at every feeding while he was supplemented so my milk wouldn't dry up. It has nothing to do with hormones. The best way I can explain it is... When the baby eats breast milk the way it's processed... red blood cells are broke down into bilirubin (the yellow color... jaundice) and it gets out of the system by attaching too breast milk and then gets pooped out. The baby looks yellow because all the bilirubin isn't getting out of the babys system. Formula has a higher/bigger amount of the proteins that the bilirubin attaches to. That's why the yellow goes away faster. All you can do is feed more to flush it out quicker (the more poop the quicker it goes LOL)... put the baby in indirect sunlight... the sun helps break down the bilirubin. And as a LAST resort supplement... but it really isn't necessary. DON"T worry or get concerned unless the baby starts sleeping more than usual... is unresponsive/hard to wake... hard to keep away long enough to eat. Then that's a sign that the bilirubin levels have gotten too high... then it's a trip to the hospital to go under the lights.

How long does jaundice last on orient baby? My daughter has been in the hospital since the day she was born (nov 20) . And i miss her so bad, i know that its best for her to be there . She was vaccum out of me, thats why she has jaundice. But her head has been heal since 2 days now. And is it true that the longer you have jaundice it could damnits (affect) the brian?
Being vaccumed out has nothing to do with jaundice. my daughter was vacumed and dint have it but my son was natural and did. The longer its left untreated the more it affects the brain. my son had to go back to hospital after 2 days to go in an incubator under a uv sort of light. he was under it for 2 days and his levels went down but i had to go back to hospital to have his blood checked a few more times to make sure it hadnt gone back up. it didnt and he was jaundice free in about 3 weeks.  (+ info)

i do know that jaundice is cause by a back up of bilirubin in the blood. the liver is not able to get rid of it so it shows by changing the whites of your eyes to yellow, and your skin and mucous membranes.  (+ info)

In newborn babies, Jaundice appears when bilirubin builds up faster than a newborn's liver can break it down and pass it from the body. Reasons for this include:

- A newborn baby's still-developing liver may not yet be able to remove adequate bilirubin from the blood.

Phototherapy is usually effective, but if a baby develops a severe case of jaundice, or his bilirubin levels continue to rise despite phototherapy treatment, he may need to be admitted to the intensive care unit for a blood transfusion called an "exchange transfusion."

Something else you can do on your own to help reduce jaundice is make sure that your baby is getting plenty of breast milk or formula — so he'll have frequent bowel movements. I'm just wondering. I know that a sign of liver damage (caused by taking too much Tylenol) is yellowing of the skin and/or eyes. How long after taking the medicine would you notice the jaundice? And for that matter, how long before you notice any other symptoms, like nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain?

It's going to take a few days for the liver toxicity to become really notable, and probably weeks or months for death to occur.
You'll feel a little bit weird if you OD'd too much.
I've OD'd and have had liver damage before on this. It took about 1 1/2 days for the liver to start getting attacked with all the toxins.

My level of bilirubin is off, and therefore I have jaundice. It makes my eyes look yellow and gross. How do I make them white?

I've read online about all different crazy remedies but there are sooooo many different ones. Any help is appreciated!
I don't know if this works for older people, but when infants are jaundiced, it is suggested the baby get more sunshine. I had to do this with my own son when he was first brought home from the hospital. I really don't know enough about it to know what the sunshine does to help the jaundice, but maybe there is more information you can find on the Internet. If anything, the sunshine is free, so you don't have to invest an of your money to find out if it will work.  (+ info)

How is my babys jaundice going to go away if I live in the basement?

Ok I just had a baby about a week ago, he has a bit of jaundice the pediatrician told me a few days ago. She said to give him more sunlight. I live in the basement of a house so it doesnt get much light down there. I've been taking him out for walks the last couple days but it doesnt seem to be improving.

How will I get it to go away if I live in the basement? I cant spend all day outside.

Anyone have any suggestions?
(I mean if I lived upstairs I would put him by the window for a bit but I dont have a window with direct sunlight its like a dungeon down here.)

Regular light bulbs arent same as the lightbulbs they use in the hospital right?

Just keep getting him out in the sun. Take as many walks with him as you are able to, or even sit outside for a while if it is convenient each day. It will go away in time. If you're really concerned, you could always try getting one of those sun lamps that are used for plants or reptiles. That's what they use now in the hospitals, rather than putting all of the babies by the windows.  (+ info)
