Is Iritis considered a short-term disability?

I'm suffering from Iritis in my right eye, which has blurred my vision and I'm unable to work continuously in front of a computer screen. I'm trying to obtain a short-term disability leave through my employer's insurance. Do you know if insurance companies will consider Iritis as a short-term disability? My doctor is skeptical about it...

What is the difference between iritis and eye syndrome?

in my own personal experience iritis is not usually caused by "trauma" as the last poster indicated. sometimes it is, but usually its caused by either inflammatory disease (arthritis, sarcoid, etc) or idiopathic.

iritis aka anterior uveitis is inflammation inside of the eye. usually white blood cells & protein ("flare"). it causes achy eye pain, blurry vision, red eye and light sensitivity. it is often confused for "pink eye", which it is not. it needs medical treatment by an optometrist or ophthalmologist, and iof left untreated can CAUSE other problems like posterior synechiae and glaucoma.

How can I get rid of Iritis?

Recently I got Iritis (right eye). I was given eye drops , every 2 hrs for 4 days, 4 times a day for 4 days, 3 times, two times and then once a day. As soon as I finished it flared up again. My doctor said it could be caused by a virus, but did not do a blood check, it has now flared up again. I have started to get really depressed. How can I make it go away?
----------

Is the iritis only in the one eye? Does it take turns between the eyes? is this the first time you have had iritis?

There are many causes of iritis and some causes are never known.
Depending on where about in the eye iritis is, and what country you are in, can affect the treatment you recieve.

I'm in england and have had iritis on and off now for about 3 years.
The drop schedule you describe seems very short to me. When I have iritis my doc has a treatment that last 6 weeks.

Steroid drops are put in every hour for the first 2 days, then every 2 hours for 5 days, then every 3 hours for 7 days, every 4 hours for 7 days and every 6 hours for 7 days, then every 8 hours for 7 days, then every 12 hours for 7 days and then 1 drop a day for a week.

If the drops are stopped too quickly, then the iritis can return, and it seems that this may have happened with you.

Every time I go to the hospital with this disease, a different eye doc, gices me a different schedule. Mostly I ignore them and do the schedule I know works for me. I even ask for the drops I want, i.e I prefer pred forte over the maxidex etc.

Another point, when you put the drop in your eye, you may need to put your finger over the courner part of your eye to block the tear duct and to keep the steroid drop on the surface of the eye for it to be totally absorbed. (This also helps reduce that nasty bitter taste when the drop finds it way down the throat...yuk!)

As for blood work ups.....well it depends on where you are. I believe America does this as standard. I'm in the UK and only recently have they taken the Xrays and the blood tests.

Getting depressed is a known side effect of iritis, it can really mess with your life. But you learn, if the iritis ever comes back, how to get it treated early on and so reduce its effects.
i.e a slight aversion to light or loss of colour clarity are signs to watch for. Another is the slightly smaller pupil of the affected eye. If you see these signs, then get the drops asap. Nowadays, I can tell the flare up before it takes hold and this reduces the pain, and the time when vision is reduced.

Is there a cure or correction for Iritis?

I had joined the US Navy but was discharged because I had Iritis. I was crying my eyes out when they said they were going to separate me and I asked my ophthamologist if there were any correction to my problem but she said there was none. Fortunately it was very well treated which allowed my left eye to rest in its normal function. However I have been searching for a correction (NOT A TREATMENT) and if there is a cure please tell me!

how long does it take for iritis to settle in?

if you think you have iritis how long (days) is it before your eye gets as red as the pics on the net, or are those only the most severe cases?
----------

I had it a few yrs ago and my eye felt like it was burning.I did not know what was wrong so saw my GP, she thought it might be conjunctivitis but to be safe she sent me straight to the hospital to see an eye specialist. There after many test iritis was diagnosed. My eye was rather red then from all the tests. treatment was pain killing drops in my eye and steroid drops to fully dialte the pupil so the iris could "rest".
I had to wear a patch because my pupil was dialated it hurt like made when light went into it. It was about a month before my eye was better.
if you suspect iritis you need to be checked out as it can lead to blindness, don't wait to go red,  (+ info)

For Yag, or another eye doc on here: Is it OK to wear make-up while recovering from Iritis?

I've been on treatment for 7 days and have not worn eye make-up. I was worried that removing the make-up (rubbing eyes) might worsen the condition, but I really don't look forward to going without make up for several weeks. Will you comment please? Thank You.
Thanks, Paul!

Iritis is an inflammation of the uveal coat of the eye, the iris is the front part. Most with irits also have uveitis which is further back, but some keep the whole inflammatory thing located in front.

Using eye makeup won't cause you any harm. Make sure you use clean Mascara and change the tube every week or so as there are some mean, mean bacteria that grow in mascara. Be careful not to rub your eyeball, just gently apply your makeup to the lids....you'll be fine.  (+ info)

Has anyone been treated for Iritis? How long does it take for the redness to fade?

Thanks Jen. They did give me prednsone drops and dilation drops. The dilation helps with the pain a lot already, I've only had the medicine for about 6 hours. I'm glad you finally got over yours.
----------

I had Iritis from December, 2006 to February, 2007. I did not know what was wrong and I had the symptoms for about one week before I went to the doctor. My eye was red every day and I had extreme shooting pain in it when I was in the sunlight. I went in, they treated me for Iritis, and the redness went away within a couple of days with the drops they put me on. If I went off the drops, I got it right back though. They said I had a rare case seeing that it took so long to heal. I did not have a really bad case, just one that did not want to go away. The drops they gave me really helped and I noticed improvement right away.  (+ info)
