What are some natural things to help insomnia?

I have mild insomnia, some weeks I sleep well, and others I can't get to sleep or stay asleep the whole week. By the way, insomnia is a hereditary condition that technically means "to have trouble sleeping". I try to get up at the same time, not have caffeine after 3 and I can't figure out what helps me sleep some weeks and what doesn't other weeks. What are some good natural (non-sleeping pill) involved things that are known to help insomnia?
----------

Don't eat dinner or any carbs after 9 p.m. it's best to have dinner at 6-7...

Drink half a glass of warm milk before bed

Make sure your room is dim and cool, not too cold or hot

Turn you clock away from your face and don't look at the time

This one works well Count Sheep...the idea is to bore yourself so you get tired and fall asleep

Take a nice long bath in Luke Warm water before sleep

Don't shift around too much and get into a comfortable position.

If you can't sleep don't just stay in bed, get up and read a book or watch TV so you get sleepy and tired

No caffeine whatsoever

Get up at the same time like you are doing now

In the morning open all the windows and make sure you spend the day in a bright habitat and at night keep your room dark

You might need a new mattress or your pillow might need to be elavated

DO NOT TAKE ANY NAPS DURING THE DAY NO MATTER WHAT

And if these tips don't work, and your insomnia gets worse you might need to see a doctor and then you might have to take sleeping pills  (+ info)

What are the fatal levels in blood pressure?

I recently had to take a physical and was told I could not eat for at least 6 hours before they did my bloodwork. I ended up missing lunch, and didn't eat for about 10 hours. When the nurse started my bloodwork, she couldn't get a vein. I passed out 3 times and when she took my blood pressure when I finally came to, it was 60 over 40.

How close to fatal is that?
----------

God is very Gracious and Merciful, He called off the angel of death, so thank HIM, might be HE wants to take good work from you.
Remember to drink milk with a little sugar when going for physical, because the blood sugar level falls down, and a fatal outcome is there. Dates if included are extra supplements.
You have excellent cardiac reserve that's why you didn't faint.
Best of Luck wise guy.  (+ info)

How to reduce the stress caused by insomnia?

I'm asking this on behalf of my friend who is some what suffering from insomnia and this is really affecting her stress rate. Hi,
You can find something useful to do.

Anyway you can not sleep! Then at least find something useful to do and the pleasure for having done something helpful to other people helps balancing stress.

Another good effect is that when you do something else than usual you might forget about your casual problems which do not let you feel how tired you really are. This is the best way to get easily asleep!

Does anyone have a herbal remedy for Insomnia and migraines?

I have been suffering from migraines and insomnia for aprrox 3 months. My doctor says they are probably related to each other. He has given me serval types of pain pills, and sleeping pills. Which work. But make me sleepy, and sluggish the next day. I work as a registered nurse so I know about the prescription medications. But of course we were never taught about Herbal remedies. Does any one have any that really work. I am having a real hard time with this because I have a demanding job and a family to take care of. And I feel completely worn out. My doctor does have me set up with specialist. But my appointments are not for some time.
I don't do illegal drugs.

Have you tried melatonin for sleep? You can buy it at any vitamin store or drug store. You take it about two hours before bed time. It has no side effects and no "sleep hangover" in the morning. If that doesn't work, there is a new prescription med called Rozerem. It is like a high potency melatonin and I've seen people have pretty good luck. Both Rozerem and melatonin may take a week or so to really know if they are working.

I just started taking magnesium for migraines. So far, so good. I have read numerous studies touting the benefits of magnesium and most suggest 250-500 mg/day.

Hope something works for you.  (+ info)

Can there be an association between insomnia and split-personalities?

In the book and movie "Fight Club", the main character develops a split personality seemingly because of his insomnia. Is this a realistic effect of insomnia? Have there been any documented cases? Please supply documentation, if possible.
----------

Insomnia does not cause split personality disorder, but can be a symptom of the disease, it may also be a symptom of bipolar disorder. but these disorders are not caused by insomnia, insomnia can be caused by them. Insomnia though in long term cases can cause personality changes due to lack of REM sleep which is needed for the brain to get rid of excess energy, when it has no release it starts to deteriorate fast.  (+ info)

Is it still insomnia if you make up for the sleep you lost later?

Like, what if you got in the habit of making up for a sleepless night by catching the missed zzz's during the day? Is it still insomnia if you manage to sleep the reccomended amount but at daytime?
----------

Not so much insomnia, but definitely a sleep disorder. Some people, like myself, are cursed by a genetic mutation called the after-hours gene. It is speculated that this gene is responsible for regulating the body's internal clock (the circadian rhythm) and those who possess it work on a 27 hour day instead of 24 hours like normal folks. If you don't have any reason to be up in the morning just stay up late and be proud to be a night owl. If it is something that bothers you, try taking a melatonin supplement. Melatonin is the hormone that makes you sleepy; normal people start secreting it around midnight.  (+ info)

Is there another way to beat insomnia other than sleeping pills?

For the past while, I've been having really bad insomnia. I have work at 9:00AM and I go to bed at 8:30PM because I know that I probably wont get much sleep, I fall asleep at 8 and usually wake up by 1-2AM and cant fall back asleep. Sleeping pills can be addictive, so I was wondering, is there any other way to beat insomnia other than using sleeping pills?
