PLEASE HELP!! i think I might have Fatal familial insomnia! Am I too young? PLEASE ANSWER!!!?

I'm only 16, but I read National Geographic last night and I saw an article about sleep and it mentioned this rare disease that is found only among 40 families world wide. I'm worried right now, because I looked up the symptoms and I have a few of them. Here are the symptoms I have
*sweating a lot (it's not even hot out, but I'm sweating a lot)
*constipation
*the inability to take naps in the day (I've had this ever since I can remember)
*Slight trouble sleeping at night.
I know that this disease is usually only common in older people, around 30s-50s but I'm really worried! Am I too young to get this disease?
I was however going through withdrawl yesterday and part of today, but I ran out of my Vyvanse (ADHD medication) and I couldn't get it refiled until earlier today. Please help, am I too young for this disease?

I think you're just paranoid. This is why my boyfriend hates it when I read stuff on the internet or watch stuff or watch stuff on tv or whatever. You start to believe you have all these diseases and before you know it....you're a hypochondriac and you're researching that too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypochondriasis

Seriously just don't even think about it. There's enough in life to worry about, you don't need to add unnecessary stress.  (+ info)

How is Fatal Familia Insomnia passed?

What are some characteristics of the gene that is passed?
Do you have any other information regarding the disorder (not including symptoms)?
Are there any possible treatment or prevention options besides gene therapy?
----------

this is a genetic disorder limited to a very few families of mediterranean origin. just search for it in quotes.  (+ info)

That is so nearly statistically impossible that it is ridiculous to even think of it.

You have a very statistically significant chance of having Grave's or Cushing's though.  (+ info)

Anyone know a good website about fatal insomnia?

Dieing from insomnia sounds a little like something you would see on a medical TV drama. You can go as long as 72 hours with absolutely no sleep with out any harm. Most people that have insomnia swear they haven't slept at all when in reality they sleep a few minutes here and there. Don't sound like that's enough but it keeps you from brain damage.
I posted a link below for your information. i hope it putts your fears asleep.

how do you die of insomnia?

I'm doing an essay on Fatal Familial Insomnia, i cant find where it actually tells you what the cause of death is after the disease has taken its course. or is anyone has any other information of how insomnia actually kills the person
----------

People can only stay awake for so long before it does severe damage to the body
it does depend on the person and their health problems
a person can only stay awake for 8 to 12 days before they will die
most of the time from a heart attack
it messes up their bodies chemistry and with the increases and decreases of certain hormones they can no longer regulate their body function

There is also a condition that some one thinks they are not sleeping but they do fall asleep for few secs or Min's and they do not know it and they do not have any memory of it so if they are doing this while they are mostly staying awake it can add several days to the 8 - 12 days  (+ info)

sporadic/fatal familiar insomnia?

Hello. I've been experiencing insomnia episodes before, but never this severe as this one. I suddenly began having trouble falling asleep, and i don't even remember when was the last time i felt asleep quickly. It takes at least 1 hour to make it no matter how tired i am, and these last days, it just gone worse.....with 3, 5.....and i have frequent nights where i can't sleep a single wink.

When i googled my sympthoms, i found out that there is a specific kind of insomnia, that is deadly called fatal familiar insomnia(nobody in my family has it), and another form of it that occurs spontaneously - sporadic fatal insomnia(family history not needed).

Whenever i asked for an advice, everyone told me to relax, and i really do relax when i go to bed, and still no effect, no matter how tired i am, my brain won't let me sleep. I don't have anything else on my mind, i just don't seem to be able to shut my brain off. And i am active during the day too, but that doesn't help either.

Can someone please give me an advice, at least some tips about if i have this kind of insomnia or the "normal" one, as it really scares me......
----------

Relax. You have plain old normal everyday insomnia. I know this because you wrote down the cause of your insomnia. "i just don't seem to be able to shut my brain off" The cause of fatal non-familial insomnia is a prion disease, not racing thoughts like you wrote. So you need to learn to control yourself, and be able to turn your brain off at night. Like many people, you may need help with this. It's time for you to see a therapist.  (+ info)

Could i have a sporadic fatal insomnia, or fatal familiar insomnia?

Greetings. I am a 19 years old male.In the past month i have troubles with falling asleep.Sometimes i sleep 3-4 hours sometimes 2-3, sometimes 0.......but then there were also the days where i was getting a normal 6-8 hours of sleep. After the last episode of insomnia i had a period of 6-7 days of normal sleep (i usually sleep 6-7 hours) but last night out of nowhere it came back, and i wasn't able to sleep at all.I never used any medications(didn't want to) i was trying to relax and be more active during the day, it helped before but not now........

I was reading about a disease called fatal familiar insomnia and sporadic fatal insomnia. Do you think i could have any of these? None in my family ever had this and in my home country(Serbia) nobody never had this condition as far as i know.Or is it just a chronic insomnia that will get better again at some point?I am also kinda scared now when the night comes, as i know that i will get a poor sleep or no sleep at all..........but what is strange is that i feel rested and able to focus normally on everything surrounding me.

Thanks in advance for reply.

Chances are you have just normal insomnia.

Fatal familial insomnia is very rare. It is a hereditary piron (think CJD/mad cow) disease caused by a mutation in a gene called PRNP.

It's not in your family so you don't have it. (also you'd be the youngest person in the would to have it)

The sporadic form is also very, very, very rare!

As well as insomnia people with these conditions have other cognitive problems

You need to try and get into a good pattern of work/play/sleep, don't take stimulants (such as caffeine) at night, don't watch TV in bed, etc.

At 19 I'd avoid sleeping pills, or at most take for a week, as yo can become dependent on them.  (+ info)

Very interesting question about fatal insomnia, please help?

Alright, so I have all of the symptoms of fatal insomnia which is weird, haha, I do have hallucinations and when i have them they result in panic attacks, I have way too many phobias, I am losing weight but not rapidly, but I am losing it, I am not unresponsive or anything, I do have insomnia, but only once in a while sometimes I do not go to sleep by choice because things planned in the morning I do not want to miss if I sleep in, sometimes, though I just cannot go to sleep for like 1-3 days. Ok but here's the interesting part, fatal insomnia is a gene hereditary thing, where you can only get it if your family past has the history of it, which, they don't at all, my mom is still alive and she is 40, and so is my dad, my mom told me that grandma was very phobic about things, but she died of cancer....so? I have the symptoms but, not the history?

Fatal familial insomnia is characterized by increasing insomnia leading to complete sleeplessness... not just 1 to 3 days of not sleeping once in awhile. It also doesn't generally manifest symptoms until after age 30. I think you've been spending too much time on Wikipedia...  (+ info)

Fatal Insomnia? Please please help!?

Hi,

For the past 3 days I have had zero sleep...I mean none at all (except about 1 hour after I drank a glass of wine). I have tried to lie down for a nap and it just doesn't happen. I am so so worried that I have contracted sporadic fatal insomnia. My doctor has perscribed me some Temazepam...which i've been told is strong...but it only sent me to sleep for 3 hours today. I feel so so awful right now...i just can't function...and i'm sure I have got SFI. I'm 28 and based in Ireland.

Not sure if this is linked but since start of Jan i've been experiencing nausea and dizziness and some palpitations...had blood and heart tests for this and all came back negative. But I was sleeping fine despite these symptoms unil 3 days ago...and nothing can send me to sleep. Please tell me what to do. I feel like i'm losing my mind.
