Can sleep be induced in Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI)?

FFI is a disease that causes a person to be unable to sleep due to some sort of genetic mutation and miscommunication in the brain. The affected person eventually dies of exhaustion and health deterioration caused by lack of sleep. To try and allow sleep for the affected person, couldn't the doctor, physician, or other aide, induce sleep? Ex. anesthetics?
----------

Nope. The brain is incapable of sleep.

Sleep is more than being unconscious. A lot of things happen during sleep that are necessary to live. But those things do not happen in a person with FFI.  (+ info)

Do I have fatal familial insomnia? Pls help me!!!!?

I didn't sleep well for the last 15 days. I don't know if this is fatal familial insomnia. Pls help. I don't know why this insomnia happen. Can lack of sleeping cause fatal familial insomnia? Its making me more worried than ever. I just found out about it in wikipedia. My family has no history of this, of course..but why can't I sleep? And how did this disease happen in the first place? If the disease is only caused by heredity, how did the first person who gets it get it? YOu understand me? Pls help. I don't want to die. Currently I have 2 sleepless nights and 3 hrs-7hrs in between them for 15 days.
----------

I know a lot about insomnia, but I've never heard of this. Have you experienced a coma, hallucinations, or being in a stupor? I doubt it! Sometimes the internet tends to cause people to panic! Don't believe everything you read on the computer!
If you've had trouble sleeping for the last 15 days only, you may not even have insomnia at all. Don't even worry about FFI!
I've known people who have averaged 2-3 hours of sleep for 50 years! One is my mother, who finally got treatment from a psychiatrist. Now she sleeps 7 hours straight through every night! It's the closest thing to a miracle I've ever seen. If your problem continues for a couple months, see your regular doctor. If S/He can't help you, get a referral to a psychiatrist. S/He WILL make you sleep.
Please stop worrying. Stress certainly does not help!
Go make yourself a cup of warm milk. You can add honey to make it yummy. Warm milk is very soothing and has the natural chemical, Tryptophan, which makes you sleepy. Please don't knock it till you try it! lol When you get in bed, don't think about yourself. Think about a good movie or TV show you watched, a good book you read, or even beautiful scenery, like the blue-green waters, the flowers, and the sunsets in Hawaii, for example.
Relax, and don't worry. Everything is gonna be OK. You'll see. ;)  (+ info)

what is Fatal Familial Insomnia?

I have been sleep deprived for days and while searching Insomnia I found this

Of course I probably don't have it, but I heard it's where people die from Insomnia

Everything else I find is about something called Prion and it's definition is kinda scientific

I just want to know

How does someone with Fatal Familial Insomnia die from sleep deprivation?
People say that scientific studies show that sleep deprivation kills within 2 weeks,
but that study was on lab mice and aren't really a go comparison

Do these people have any symptoms beside insomnia?

Do they experience sleep deprivation like the rest of us (Hallucinations, irritability, restlessness, etc.) or is something different about what they go through?
----------

First off, you don't have FFI. About 200 people in the world have it. It is carried down genetically from your parents. Generally symptoms will appear around age 50. The disease is spread into 4 stages and death will happen anywhere from 7 to 18 months after symptoms begin. Stage 1 is accompinied with increasing insomnia which leads to anxiety, paranoia, and panic attacks. This stage will generally last 4 months. Stage two. Severe insomnia sets in. Panic attacks and nightmarish hallucinations begin to occur more often. This stage lasts roughly 5 months. Stage 3. Complete inability to sleep is accompinied with rapid weight loss and sometimes schizophrenia. As you can imagine, the patient will begin to become clinically insane. Stage 4. Severe dementia and social desertion are in full effect. The patient has gone about a year with no sleep at all and parts of the brain begin to shutdown. Eventually the patient with become completely unresponsive to stimulus and will resemble a zombie. This leads to the brain and heart simoultaniously shutting down causing death. The fourth stage will last around 6 months.

Obviously this isn't a fun disease to have. A year of mental and physical torture ending in death. Essentially it is the worst disease out there. At least, in my opinion.

I would say you are probably just suffering from insomnia because of stress, inconsistent diet or a failure to produce melatonin. So, go buy some melatonin from walmart (OTC), eat regularly, and get to sleep on time. If it is really a problem consult your doctor. Just one thing though, if he wants to prescribe you any medication STAY AWAY from zolpidem and ambien. It causes sleepwalking, memory loss and can make you do crazy things that you have no control over.

I hope some of this helps  (+ info)

My friend has Fatal Familial Insomnia?

One of my dear friends has a rare genetic disorder called fatal familial insomnia. He's told me that it is caused by a genetic defect called a prion, and that it can eventually make a person spiral into complete sleep deprivation and eventually death.
But he also says that he doesn't show signs of having the prion, so he doesn't think he'll die because of it, he'll just be an insomniac for the rest of his life.
Please explain this to me; I need to know about him. He is a great friend and I would hate to lose him at such a young age (I'm 13, he's 14).
We play World of Warcraft, and he had to get off just now because of his arm was being pained by muscle spasms. Could this be because of the FFI?
----------

I doubt it has to do with that. It's probably playing WoW that did it if he played for a long time, but I can't be sure.

BTW does your friend ever sleep? If he is sleeping he'll be ok. He would have to be awake for a long, long time to die from it. The symptoms usually involve panic attacks, paranoia, and weight loss.

Usually the onset of disease occurs after 30. I hope he ends up being ok. He is young so there may be some type of cure by then.  (+ info)

PLEASE ANSWER!! I think I might have Fatal familial insomnia! Am I too young? I'm 16. PLEASE HELP!!!?

I'm 16, but I'm afraid I have Fatal familial insomnia! It's a disease in which the patient completely looses the ability to sleep, and eventually dies from sleep sleep deprivation. I know it's EXTREMELY rare, only found in 40 families world wide, and usually only found in adults between the ages of 25-50, but I'm afraid I might have it! I have some of the symptoms.
*Trouble sleeping, I fall asleep, only to wake up every hour and than wake up around 1:00 am, and have trouble falling back asleep.
*intense sweating (only sometimes
I AM a Hypochondriac, but I'm on treatment, I take 200mg of Zoloft in the morning, but I have a history of severe hypochondria.
Please answer this, I know most people just ignore my questions.

Björn Þór Jónsson - Soon you WILL be able to sleep easier. Fatal familial insomnia is commonly inherited from a parent = something you appear NOT to have. Secondly, you do fall asleep sometimes. MOST IMPORTANT likely cause of your insomnia is the Zoloft you are taking, and then perhaps something more. Zoloft and insomnia can be related. Insomnia is one of the more common side effects of Zoloft. If you suffer from insomnia while taking Zoloft, try following good sleep habits, such as avoiding caffeine four to six hours before you go to sleep, not exercising within two hours of bedtime, and not napping later than 3 p.m. Zoloft and Insomnia.
Insomnia is one of the most common Zoloft® side effects. Based on clinical trials of Zoloft (sertraline hydrochloride), insomnia occurred in up to 28 percent of people taking the medication. Insomnia was most commonly seen in people taking Zoloft for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) -- up to 28 percent of people with OCD reported having insomnia with Zoloft. It was least common in those taking Zoloft for premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) -- 12 percent of women with PMDD reported experiencing insomnia while taking the medication.
Suggestions
Some people taking Zoloft find that improving their sleep habits can be an effective insomnia cure. Examples of tips for better sleep include the following:
Keep a regular sleep-wake cycle. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine in the four to six hours before bedtime.
Don't exercise within two hours of bedtime. Exercising five or six hours before bedtime may help you sleep more soundly.
Don't eat large meals within two hours of bedtime.
Don't nap later than 3 p.m.
Sleep in a dark, quiet room kept at a comfortable temperature.
If you can't fall asleep within 20 minutes, do a quiet activity somewhere else and return to bed when you're sleepy.
Wind down in the 30 minutes before bedtime with a relaxing pre-sleep ritual, such as a warm bath, soft music, or reading.
GOOD LUCK. PLEASANT DREAMS!  (+ info)

Do I Have Fatal Familial Insomnia ?

I am really scared that I might have FFI , because I only get 4-5 hours of sleep EVERYDAY ... its only once in a blue moon that I get more hours of sleep than that ... no matter what I do , it seems like I cant sleep for longer that 4-5 hours and when I wake up , I dont really feel rested , but yet , I cant go back to sleep ... are these symptoms of FFI , possibly ?
----------

The chances of you winning the lottery, then getting struck by lightning, then winning the lottery again, then getting struck by lightning yet again are greater than the chance of you developing FFI. It's genetic and extremely extremely rare. It sounds like you just have run of the mill insomnia. Go talk to you doctor. They might be able to prescribe you something to help you sleep. Also, try good sleep hygiene. Wake up at the same time every morning, regardless of what time you went to bed. Within a few days your body will push back the clock so you're getting tired earlier. And it sounds like you may have some anxiety on top of this if you're convincing yourself that you have rare diseases. You might talk to a doctor about that as well. Let me know if you have any questions!  (+ info)

What is Fatal familial insomnia?

Its confusing me lol
----------

There was a UK documentary on this last year. There's a family in Italy who suffer from it, and sadly they're dying from it one by one, the father then the son and now the daughter (think I got that right), it was their family doctor who diagnosed and 'named' the disease.

Basically if I remember rightly, out of the blue they suddenly stopped being able to sleep, and the body just gets worn out because it can't function without sleep. Probably die of heart attack I expect.

Not sure why it's confusing you though, but hope this has helped.  (+ info)

Fatal Familial Insomnia?

I think I might have this http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/exchange/node/519

I can get to sleep, sleep for maybe about an hour or so and then wake up and have to move around, like if I'm on my left side I'd wake up and lay on my back or right side. Repeat this about 8-15 times a night.

I've noticed a few things, though. Whenever I wake up to move to another side, I'll stretch and let out a deep yawn, and sometimes whenever I start moving to my other side I'll get a headache that sometimes lasts hours.

I feel refreshed most of the time whenever I wake up, although sometimes I'm tired and groggy throughout the day. It's not bad though, but it's the fact that I'm not staying asleep that is worrying me. I'm functioning just fine, though.

Also, I'm able to dream sometimes so I'm able to get into the REM stage - I think.

It's been like this for about 4-5 years.
Oh yeah, if I don't have it then what do I do?
or rather, what do I have?

Tennager with Fatal Familial Insomnia??

I am 16 and Italian. I have had sleeping problems for 5 months. Yesterday I had no R.E.M. sleep. I fell half asleep. And it says one day you just toss and turn and then the next night it's worse and then you can't sleep at all and you die about two months later. I felt like I didn't even sleep last night. I tossed and turned and went into like a half asleep half awake thing for four hours. And when I got up I felt like I didn't even sleep.

IF I DON'T SLEEP TONIGHT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

I don't want to die now. And It says it runs in italian families. I'm really scared, depressed and alone.
----------

FFI is *incredibly* rare: it doesn't run in Italian families, it runs very specifically through one or two Italian families. If it was in your family, you would know it by now, believe me. Additionally, symptoms don't appear until middle-age, not in adolescence.

Bouts of insomnia are fairly common, particularly in adolescence, and nothing to stress too much about: what you need are some tricks to help you lie in bed and relax without stressing about stuff like whether or not you have FFI. Try getting up very early and going for 45 min jog/run/walk before school. Eat smaller, frequent meals high in protein. Walk, run or cycle in the afternoons. If you're lying in bed and can't sleep, get up and do something else: read a book, watch television. Maybe listen to some music or, my personal preference, the news on the radio (I get too hooked on music - people reading the news is much calmer and more relaxing, and I get interested in the stories and forget about whatever it is that I was worrying about that kept me awake).  (+ info)
