is there a way to prevent harlequin ichthyosis before it occurs?

or a way to reduce the chance..? thanks.
----------

no there is no way to really prevent it, its really really extremely rare condition and "before it occurs" you can only be born with it not develop it later in life, it may be hereditary but still its rare,

im not sure you know what Harlequin Ichthyosis, and i really dont think you have it because you would know this answers by now if you did,

but if you scared of getting this disease, like i said you can only be born with it and if somebody has it you can instantly tell they do by their appearance, there is no "when will i get it" its like being born without an arm, same with harlequin ichthyosis, your born with the deformity at birth

what are the treatments available and chances of cure for Pemphygus Vulgaris?

I have been taking prednisole of varying dosages for the past ten weeks. The lesions disappeared but began to reappear when I lowered the dosage on the advise of my dermatologist.

According to my medical dictionary. Immunosuppresive agents such as azathioprine or cyclophosphamide are used with the corticosteroids therapy...such a prednisone. Go back to your doc and discuss this with him/her.  (+ info)

What is the permanent remedy for the auto immune skin disease of Pemphigus Vulgaris?

Treatment for pemphigus vulgaris (PV) involves the use of one or more drugs. Initially, PV is treated with a corticosteroid. Other drugs are usually used in conjunction with corticosteroids.

Corticosteroids

Prompt and sufficient doses of corticosteroids, usually prednisone or prednisolone, are required to bring pemphigus under control. Once controlled, the steroid is reduced slowly to minimize side effects. Some patients then go into remission; however, many patients need a small maintenance dose to keep the disease under control.

Immunosuppressants

Azathioprine (Imuran®)
Mycophenolate mofetil (CellCept®)
Cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan®)
Cyclosporine
Additional Drugs

Other drugs that are used routinely with varying effects are:

Dapsone®
Gold injections
Methotrexate
Tetracycline, minocycline, or doxycycline combined with niacinamide
Biologics - several of these drugs (Rituxan, Remicade, Enbrel) are in clinical trial.

Treatment should always be addressed according to the disease activity that is clinically apparent. An indirect immunofluorescence test (antibody titer count) will generally show a high count when the disease is more active, and will be low or undetectable when the disease is in remission. However, this is not always true. The antibody titer test may be most useful with patients on maintenance doses of drugs. If a titer count is low, then it could be reassuring that the flare is controllable and short. A high titer might indicate the need for further treatment.

To date, no studies have shown that alternative, homeopathic, or any other non-traditional method has been successful in treating these diseases. For the best possible results, it is imperative that traditional treatments be administered.
However, once the disease is under control, alternative therapies may be useful to help reduce drug side effects.  (+ info)

There appear to be several treatments available, all of which you have to discuss with your doctor. I just consulted eMedicine real quick and this is what it said.

* Topical retinoids are helpful for some patients.
* Alpha-hydroxy acids (eg, lactic, glycolic, or pyruvic acids) are effective for hydrating the skin. They work by causing disaggregation of corneocytes in the lower levels of the newly forming stratum corneum. Lactic acid is available as a 12% ammonium lactate lotion, or it can be compounded by prescription in a concentration of 5-10% in a suitable vehicle. Twice-daily applications have shown to be superior to petrolatum-based creams for controlling of ichthyosis vulgaris.
* Removal of scales can be aided by keratolytics (eg, salicylic acid), which induce corneocyte disaggregation in the upper stratum corneum. A commercially available 6% salicylic acid gel can be used on limited areas.
* Over-the-counter products often contain urea or propylene glycol. Moisturizers containing urea in lower strengths (10-20%) produce a more pliable stratum corneum by acting as a humectant. Propylene glycol draws water through the stratum corneum by establishing a water gradient. Thick skin is then shed following hydration. Propylene glycol is a common vehicle in both prescription and over-the-counter preparations.
* Topical retinoids (eg, tretinoin) may be beneficial. They reduce cohesiveness of epithelial cells, stimulate mitosis and turnover, and suppress keratin synthesis.18 Tazarotene, a topical receptor-selective retinoid, has also been effective in one small trial.19
* Ichthyosis vulgaris is not responsive to steroids, but a mild topical steroid may be useful for pruritus.
* Acquired ichthyosis vulgaris generally tends to improve with treatment of the underlying systemic condition.  (+ info)
