Anyone know about hyperventilation syndrome and panic attacks?

I have severe panic attacks, and I've noticed lately that if I could keep from hyperventilating, I could control them a little more. I know alot of it is mind over matter, but it doesnt seem like it sometimes. Wondered if anyone else with panic/anxiety has had this problem?
----------

what i found is most helpful is not only the paper bag thing, but to refocus my attention. Instead of worrying about my breathing, I would force myself to look at an object, and analyze the object. Like what is that figurine made of? Is it plastic?, I would literally look at the chair I was sitting in, and FORCE my mind to say. "i'm looking at this chair, what kind of wood is it?" Is this pattern on all the chairs?. Sound stupid but it works. The mind has to be diverted away from the breathing,
If you ever noticed when you are in a panic state. the one thing you focus on is your breathing, but lots of things are going on then. LIterally put your eyes on something else, and say to yourself. What is that? What is that made of?,
I have suffered from these things for years.
I have even pinched myself to get my mind off my breathing.
Some people use a rubber band to snap themselves outta it
Good luck.

normal response to hyperventilation or seizure?

I just recently had a sleep deprived EEG due to nocturnal seizures, and during the EEG the tech had my do deep breathing (hyperventilation) for 3 minutes. At first it seemed like normal hyperventilation symptoms of dizziness, but shortly later my arms and hands began to convulse/shake violently. After the convulsions stopped, my muscles felt like they were super-tight. It slowly went away within the next few minutes. I am still waiting on the results of the EEG.. could this have been a seizure? Or a normal reaction to hyperventilating?
----------

The physician induced seizure by using the hyperventilation method.

Yes, its a seizure. Seizure may be provoked by hyperventilation.
The hyperventilation reduces the carbon dioxide concentration of the blood to below its normal level, thereby raising the blood's pH value (making it more alkaline), initiating constriction of the blood vessels which supply the brain, and preventing the transport of oxygen and other molecules necessary for the function of the nervous system.  (+ info)

is there a way to calm down or slow hyperventilation?

ok i was crying about some personal stuff. and i started to hyperventilate, and i am going to school tomorrow so i know at one point i am going to cry. Is there a way to be able to stop it when the tears come on?

thanks
----------

O.k. so your at school....try this.Close your eyes, take a deep, deep breath then tighten up your stomach muscles.Hold the breath until you almost just can't anymore.Your heart will speed up and use the extra oxygen that you are putting in your blood because your breathing has been fast and shallow from being upset.Sometimes this has to be repeated two or three times to really work.Good luck and things will get better.  (+ info)

how to handle stimulant induced hyperventilation?

i took a stimulant this morning and coincidentally (or at least i think) i hyperventilated.(showing symptoms 1hr after taking the stimulant...hyperventilated 15 minutes later.)
however, i believe it was not caused by the stimulant, and i would still like to continue taking it after i get to rest.
just in case i hyperventilate again because of this stimulant, would there be a more efficient way to handle it?

Is there a desease called lung hyperventilation ?

My doc saw my lung x-rays and diagnosed hyperventilation :P
The web has no info about the disease , how on earth the doc made that assumption ????
i smoke and i had shortness of breath back then , now i'm ok , but it still puzzles my mind.
----------

look, there's no such thing as lung hyperventilation, although the doctor diagnosed you hyperventilation, maybe hyperventilation can trigger you some lung diseases.

Don't smoke, it causes too much risk.  (+ info)

How to help hyperventilation?

I first hyperventilated a couple of years ago. It happened again earlier this year, then a couple of months ago, and last weekend I hyperventilated 4 times. It's starting to seem like a problem. How can I control this, other than the "paper bag" method, which doesn't help me at all? I hate doing it, but I can't stop. Is this problem actually threatening to my health, or is it something I just have to live with?
I hyperventilated when I was scared, stressed out, angry, frustrated, etc. It also happens when I get too close to spiders. I'm kind of arachnophobic.
----------

i do it too. To help me become more relaxed i meditate or do yoga. Just find things that relax you and im sure you'll b ok!  (+ info)

Is fainting from hyperventilation dangerous?

Besides falling back and hitting your head is it dangerous?
----------

actually not really because the reason you faint is because you have to much oxygen in your system and your body has to get rid of it by breathing out, so when you faint your body naturaly regulates it and you come back to normal but you should try it you can hit your self when fainting  (+ info)
