What are the chances of going into a coma during surgery if you're a smoker?

What are the chances of going into a coma if you're a smoker?

This is in regards to having surgery.

Does anyone know?
----------

The chances are not large but not zero. Most such events happen because of the effects of anesthesia and loss of oxygen to the brain. Having your lungs compromised as smokers do clearly doesn't make things better.  (+ info)

What would happen to a person in a coma with no health insurance?

For example, he got hurt, went to the emergency room, they did an operation and now he is in a coma.

What would happen to him?
----------

He would get treatment, just like anyone else who goes to an ER, then YOU and ME, the taxpayers pay for it. So, what about healthcare for all......um wait, we already have it, its called the ER. You can go in there with a headache and they have to treat you. In fact a few years ago there were doctors who didn't carry any health insurance, b/c they would just always go to the ER. I think they have since passed some new laws to prevent this.  (+ info)

What are the immediate reactions of a patient waking out of a coma?

Also, what is the longest period of time that a person can endure a coma? Would the patient be able to speak after waking ot of a coma?
----------

Different patients react differently when they come out of a coma. Usually they can speak. They can endure YEARS of being in a coma.

Many will say, "Why am I in a hospital?" or "What happened?"
Others will not recognize anyone and won't even know their own names. You should Google "comas." You can't believe everything you read on the internet. Unfortunately, some facts are outdated or just plain wrong. But you can learn a lot if you do some research. Good luck to you. :)  (+ info)

How can a doctor tell the difference between a coma and a fugue state?

I'm writing a story about Disassociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personalities) and wonder how medical doctors could tell if someone was not waking up because of a coma, versus not waking up because they just didn't want to be here. Do you know? Is it a brain wave thing? Is it about dreaming, or brain damage? I'd like to get the details right in my story. Thanks.
----------

Yep, most likely. There are automatic responses the body, mind, et al make that usually cant just be hidden in a fugue state, although the mind is a powerful thing, for sure.
I would think that with todays tech they have even a better chance of it.
You should research each ,start with en.wiki.pedia.com  (+ info)

What is deep coma, how much is the chance to return to normal life?

My cousin had an aort sergery, during operation his heart stoped only for 4 mins.Acually this is very common for this high risk sergery. But his brain got problem and it is 15 days he is in deep coma,he is 36 years old.The doctors says his chance is 50%,his heart condition is quite good now.We are praying!
----------

A deep coma means the person has been in a coma for two weeks or longer . The outcome for coma and vegetative state depends on the cause, location, severity and extent of neurological damage. A deeper coma alone does not necessarily mean a slimmer chance of recovery, because some people in deep coma recover well while others in a so-called milder coma sometimes fail to improve.

People may emerge from a coma with a combination of physical, intellectual and psychological difficulties that need special attention. Recovery usually occurs gradually — patients acquire more and more ability to respond. Some patients never progress beyond very basic responses, but many recover full awareness. Regaining consciousness is not instant: in the first days, patients are only awake for a few minutes, and duration of time awake gradually increases.

Predicted chances of recovery are variable owing to different techniques used to measure the extent of neurological damage. All the predictions are based on statistical rates with some level of chance for recovery present: a person with a low chance of recovery may still awaken. Time is the best general predictor of a chance of recovery: after 4 months of coma caused by brain damage, the chance of partial recovery is less than 15%, and the chance of full recovery is very low.

sorry n u got my prayers.  (+ info)

What's the difference between being in a coma and being "knocked out" or unconscious?

Just wondering how it is determined someone is in a coma instead of just being knocked out.
----------

Those in a coma demonstrate no voluntary movement and do not respond to stimuli of any kind.  (+ info)

What treatment did they give to people in a coma in the 1800s?

I know that today a person in a coma is fed through a special tube that is usually put into the upper chest. This 'food' is basically a 'well balanced' intravenous solution. And they also have a catheter fitted to collect urine etc.

But what did they do in the 1800s?

I am writing a novel based in the 1800s and I can't seem to find an answer to this one. Thanks in advance!
----------

Basically at that time patients in coma for any reason, if it persisted for any length of time, just died.  (+ info)

What are the chances of someone dying in a coma?

I have a friend in a coma right now and I miss him terribly. He also has lung cancer? Please help.
I didn't mean to put a question mark at the end of the "He has lung cancer" sentence.

There isn't an exact science to coma patients and the recovery. Just pray for the best.  (+ info)

What would happen to a pregnant woman in a coma?

Would the baby die? Would it keep growing? Say the woman is perfectly healthy and due in a couple of weeks but randomly gets knocked on the head and put in a coma for a few months. If the baby was still alive would they have to do a C-section while the mum is still unconscious?
