Can Hyperacusis be Temporary?

i think i might have hyperacusis, but can it be temporary
----------

Personally, if it recurs periodically, or if it lasts more than a few hours, I'd visit an ENT with a special interest in otology. Your personal physician can make a recommendation.  (+ info)

hyperacusis question?

are the everyday sounds that irritate a person with hyperacusis damaging to their ears, or are they just annoying but unharmful? i.e. running water, laughter, fans.
----------

Hyperacusis is primarily a disorder of central auditory processing rather than a direct reflection of cochlear pathology. In other words, hyperacusis represents a decreased threshold for discomfort, but there is no evidence that it represents a decreased threshold for damage. We are blessed with a very elegant yet simple protective feedback mechanism to minimize damage and maximize the chance for survival. In the kitchen, for instance, if you accidentally touch the red-hot element on the electric range, you immediately withdraw your hand in pain. The pain is thus an appropriate sign of impending harm; if for some reason you do not withdraw your hand, damage (i.e., the burning and destruction of the finger tips) will immediately ensue. When you grasp a warm glass of water, however, you do not withdraw your hand, of course, because there is no discomfort - the protective feedback mechanism is working appropriately. There is no impending damage to the hand from a warm glass of water. Now what happens if there is a mismatch in the feedback mechanism? You rapidly withdraw your hand from the glass of warm water because you experience discomfort, discomfort in the absence of impending damage. So this mismatch in the feedback mechanism results in a decreased threshold for discomfort, but not a decreased threshold for damage. In the case of hyperacusis, there is no evidence that there is a decreased threshold for cochlear damage (i.e., hearing loss), only that a sound well-tolerated by some is uncomfortable or even painful to others. I do not mean in any way to underestimate the magnitude of what can be a very serious - even incapacitating - problem; I wish only to clarify its nature.

One theory of hyperacusis -- a good one, in my view -- is that this challenge is a "brain thing" and not an "ear thing." In other words, a hyperacusic's brain processes sound differently than a person without hyperacusis.  (+ info)

apart from the eustachian tube unblocking are there any mental causes for hyperacusis ;am I going nuts?

As far as I can tell, hyperacusis is not a mental disorder at all, it is a structural problem of the ears.

sorry about your hyperacusis = (

Cases differ from person to person. I would recommend that you visit a qualified doctor and tell the doctor all about your symptoms. The doctor might recommend things about your diet and your lifestyle.

Also, here are some places I would research. (Please see below.)  (+ info)

Hyperacusis is defined as an inability to tolerate everyday sounds.

It is also defined as a collapse of the normal range of hearing that is present in otherwise normally functioning ears.

People with hyperacusis may find that certain sounds are more difficult to listen to than others, and some sounds may cause pain in the ears, even when those sounds don't bother others. Often, the most disturbing or painful sounds can be sudden high pitched noises like alarms, bus brakes, silverware and dishes, children's screams, and clapping.

Sometimes, hyperacusis can be so severe that people begin to avoid any public or social setting in a vain attempt to protect their ears from any sounds. It can be very difficult for family members or medical providers to understand and support the person with hyperacusis, which cannot be seen in images, like a broken bone.

Hyperacusis can come on suddenly or gradually. It can initially affect only one ear but generally speaking, within a short time, the condition is almost always bilateral. It can be mild or severe. Often, people who have hyperacusis also have tinnitus, or phantom noises in their auditory system (ringing, buzzing, chirping, humming, or beating).

Can hyperacusis cause explosive-anger?

What are the symptoms of hyperacusis?

The term hyperacusis is generally applied to people who experience the sounds of everyday life as intrusively loud, uncomfortable, and sometimes as painful. Sounds make it difficult for them to concentrate and they may report tension or even anger. Some people with hyperacusis become so afraid of sounds that they withdraw from normal daily activities and unfortunately this self imposed isolation can further exacerbate the condition.

It looks like anger would be a possibly. I'd recommend looking at some self help books to help find some ways of dealing with your anger.

I wish you the best,
