I have hydrocephalus, what are the odds my kids will have it?

I am the first in my family to have it (At least in immediate family) and as far as I understand it's a genetic mutation.

Is that right?

If so, what are the chances (given there's no history) my children will have it?

Am I better off calling a geneticist or should I just ask my PCP whenever I see him next?
I do have congenital hydrocephalus.
----------

There are two forms of hydrocephalus;

Hydrocephalus that is present at birth, known as Congenital Hydrocephalus, and hydrocephalus that occurs after birth, known as Acquired Hydrocephalus.

Congenital Hydrocephalus is thought to be caused by a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors.

Acquired hydrocephalus may result from spina bifida, intraventricular hemorrhage, meningitis, head trauma, tumours and cysts.

So it depends if your hydrocephalus is congenital or acquired as to weather you can pass it on.

Hope this helps

It is thought that congenital hydrocephalus may be of autosomal recessive inheritance. In this case there has to be someone on both sides of your family tree who has had it. This may have been many generations ago. Also in order for your children to inherit it there must be someone on the fathers side who has had it. But your hydrocephalus may be environmental rather then genetic and if it was acquired then it wont be genetic. Your best bet is to have a look at yours and your partners family genetic illness history, it would also be a good idea to ask your doc for more info.

Hydrocephalus, can it cause someone to slip into a coma?

a few months ago my great uncle went in and got some fluid removed from his brain because he had too much. and it was effecting his memory and stuff. he couldnt even remember his own name. i've researched a little and i know its called hydrocephalus. they gave him a bunch of medicine and it started to get better so they thought he was going to be fine. he went i the other day to get checked up on and stuff and he went into a coma. i was wondering what would cause it?
----------

Yes, if fluid buildup occurs rapidly, or progresses slowly but is not treated properly, hydrocephalus could result in a person going blind, having severe brain damage, going into a coma, or even dying. Usually, treatment involves inserting a shunt to drain the excess fluid from the brain to the abdomen or outside the body.  (+ info)

Hydrocephalus produces different combinations of these signs and symptoms, depending on its cause, which also varies by age. Is there a cure for hydrocephalus?

I have a niece who had an MRI done. Her results were hydrocephalus. I would like to know if this is life threatening, and also if there was anyone here (you) who has had this sickness? Please let me know of any complications you had. My niece is 30 years old and has very bad headaches. Is there anything she can do to help this situation? Thank you!
----------

She needs to continue to follow up with her physician. Hydrocephalus (water on the brain) can be life-threatening, and they need to figure out why this happened. There's no cure as such, but the treatment is to place a shunt into her neck that will lead to her skull cavity to drain the excess fluid. Her headaches should subside once they've reduced the pressure in her cranium.  (+ info)

How does hydrocephalus affect relationships?

I've been talking to a very sweet guy who happens to have hydro and was wondering how it will affect our relationship.
----------

It doesn't affect it any more or less than any other managed illness. Hydrocephalus is not contagious and is a fairly easy to control disorder. The only thing that you may have to deal with is the occasional headache. If he has a shunt, and hit fails, he'll need surgery, and he'll be sick for a week or two. This is rare, and can happen as little as once every 7-10 years, or never. As long as you can handle that, there will be nothing impacting your relationship from his illness.  (+ info)
