can a baby with an enlarged head due to hydrocephalus head ever go back to a normal size?

my daughter has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus im 28 weeks pregnant now... is it definite she will have an enlarged head and if she does can they ever get it to a normal size? i know about the shunt and everything but does the head ever become normal sized?
----------

as long as a shunt is placed her head should be normal size. If it isn't then the shunt is malfunctioning and needs a revision.  (+ info)

What is hydrocephalus and how does it affect those afflicted?

Please don't give me a long scientific or medical desccription. Used a language a 13 year old could understand.
----------

It means that the fluid that surrounds your brain in its skull has built up and is putting pressure on the brain. It's not a good thing but can be treated with a shunt. The webmd site has easy to understand explanations of health problems  (+ info)

what are the symptoms of hydrocephalus?

My daughter went for her 4 month appt today and her head went from the 45th percentile at 2 months to the 85th percentile. She is going to have an unltrasound to check for hydrocephalus. However she has no other symptoms at all. Does anyone know how likely it is to have hydrocephalus but have no other symptoms but the enlarged head?
----------

I have hydrocephalus. In infants and young children, the symptoms are headaches, vomiting, sunset eyes, among other things. For more symptoms, I would look up hydrocephalus. Then if she's having these other symptoms, ask your doctor to see a neurologist and neurosurgeon.

What is the process involved in having a shunt operation due to hydrocephalus?

How they do it, recovery, is it a major operation?
----------

The most common surgery for the treatment of hydrocephalus (water on the brain), is the insertion of a shunt - a device that diverts fluid from the brain into the abdominal cavity where it is safely absorbed into the blood stream. Though a shunt may be inserted in infants, children and adults, the procedure is essentially the same regardless of the size of the patient.

Does anyone know of anyone who has undergone a hydrocephalus operation?

Last October my four year old son was diagnosed with hydrocephalus and was operated on. Now he has a shunt for life.
----------

My son was born with hydrecephalous(water on the brain) in 1973. He has his frist shunt put in when he was 2 mos, and it did not work properly, so he had the 2nd shunt put at 2 1/2 mos. old, and has that shunt for 34 years! He has had no problems with that shunt. Usually the shunt does not last that long, before it has to be replaced. He gets it checked a couple of times a year. A couple of sign its not working is severe headaches and vomiting. He has had none of these.  (+ info)

Is it common for someone to grow out of hydrocephalus if they have spina bifida?

I have not had a problem with my shunt in 10 years and am wondering if it's still in use.
----------

It happens, but is rare. Most doctors say you have out grown it because you haven't had problems in X years. However, they don't know because they don't remove the shunt to see if the person still needs it.  (+ info)

Does anyone know much about hydrocephalus and the operation to make it bearable?

What are some of the side effects that come with it if the person has had it for a long time, and their skull has fused together? Is there anything that can be done to reverse the problems associated with these?
----------

i'm not totally familar with the proceed but it consist in inserting a small catheter under the skin, that drains the excess of cerebral spine fluid into the abdomen.-
the risk of this kind of things are the infections.-
the more time the person suffers from high intracraneal pressure the more damage it makes.-
cerebeluos herniation cause by the increased pressure can be deadly due to the compression of the respiratory center.-
when it's done in newborn babies it usually functions perfectly, i'm not aware of the stadistics on adults though.-
hope this helps you.-  (+ info)

would the brain reject a shunt for hydrocephalus?

i have to get a shunt in my head, cuz i have hydrocephalus. i cant get in touch with my neurosurgeon.i was wonderin if the brain could reject the shunt like a body could reject a new heart? im 18 yrs. old. can any doctors or nurses please rtell me everything i need to know bout the shunt surgery? will i have to get it replced every once in a while?
----------

VP and VA shunts can be rejected by the brain but it is rare. Infection is more common. Also, no one told me this before I got my shunt but I wish someone did, there will be a lot of bruising after the surgery from putting in the tubing. Just be ready to look a little different for little while  (+ info)
