How is this for the start of my blog about a person with Histrionic Personality Disorder?

Can you read this and let me know if it is "blog-worthy?" It's about my interactions with a family member who has Histrionic Personality Disorder.

In your situation, I'd leave it out in the public for a few weeks -- long enough to get some responses. Then take it down.

Over and again, we see parents taking a perfectly healthy human babies and screwing them up through the first 20 years or so of their lives. Then when the parents get older and lonelier, they want forgiveness and perfect love from the kids. (Then call you names when you simply exhibit reactions you've learned from a crappy childhood in their hands). I hope you don't find that too direct or offensive.

Suggestion? Keep in touch, but try to stay away from the drama. I wouldn't totally trust her. Grrr. "I know yer pain!" LOL  (+ info)

What are the symptoms of Dependant Personality Disorder and Histrionic Personality Disorder?

I have recently come across these two disorders and would like to know in layman's terms what they are. What is the difference between DPD and HPD? Are they more common in men than women and do they manifest differently in each sex?

My husband has Borderline Personality Disorder, and these two seem to be closely linked although he tends to be more on the Narcissistic side. Your view on this would be appreciated.
----------

They manifest abotu the same in both men and women... both are more complicated than this but in very simple terms..... A person with DPD can not make decisions on her own, she is completely dependent on other people for most aspects of her life. A person with HPD needs to be the center of attention.... they will do anything to get attention either negative or positive.  (+ info)

Can you have both histrionic and narcissistic personality disorder at the same time?

I kinda have some signs of both personality disorders, and i was just wonder. Please let me know.
NOTE: Please have serious answers. Thanks!
----------

Yes. It isn't uncommon to have symptoms/diagnosis of multiple personality disorders, like most mental health issues.  (+ info)

Just diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and histrionic personality disorder plus more, read on?

I have just been diagnosed with this and there's also a strong chance of dependent personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder.
Im not on any meds because i just dont want to, anyone with any of these how do you cope, is it hard what do you go through, i just feel i need someone to relate to.
----------

Educate yourself on the disorders youve been diagnosed for.
Try to recognize your own behaviors thoughts and feelings that match those that are part of these disorders. Once you know what is going on and can acknowledge and recognize how the disorder play out in you you can begin to try to manage reduce and change those behaviors thoughts and feelings.

I didn't realize much of what I was doing thinking being until I was diagnosed with bpd. I'd never even heard of it. once I read about it I realized I had many negative and distorted approaches to reality that were causing me great difficulties in relationships and daily existence that I didn't have to live with. The good thing about borderline and histrionic is that in time with great effort and desire to change they can be managed to a level where they do not dominate and destroy your life.

I don't have insurance so the treatment of choice DBT is out of my means. I just do my best to be self aware and try to recognize when I may be doing feeling thinking something that is disordered and to stop myself. My relationship is already running much smoother simply by not opening my mouth to him about what I may be thinking or perceiving and feeling in any given moment because I know they may not be real. I wait. I sit with these feelings rather than send him on an emotional roller coaster of love hate push pull. If over a period of days and weeks these feelings thoughts persist then I tell him because they may be based in reality if they last for some time. I also try very hard not to be impulsive and self destructive. If the urges hit I wait and do not act on them. Theres more ...

but the biggest thing you can do is learn about the diagnosis and its symptoms and look at your self deeply. Then try not to allow the disordered feelings thoughts and behaviors to have free reign over your actions, relationships, and life in general.  (+ info)

What can I do to treat histrionic personality disorder?

I was recently diagnosed as a pathological liar with HPD. Is there anything I can do besides therapy?
----------

The problem you have is a situation where treatment is difficult:

The cause of this disorder is unknown, but childhood events and genetics may both be involved. It occurs more frequently in women than in men, although some feel it is simply more often diagnosed in women because attention-seeking and sexual forwardness is less socially acceptable for women.

People with this disorder are usually able to function at a high level and can be successful socially and at work. They may seek treatment for depression when romantic relationships end.

They often fail to see their own situation realistically, instead tending to over dramatise and exaggerate. Responsibility for failure or disappointment is usually blamed on others.

Treatment:

Treatment is often prompted by depression associated with dissolved romantic relationships. Medication does little to affect this personality disorder, but may be helpful with symptoms such as depression. Psychotherapy may also be of benefit.

Individuals who suffer from this disorder are usually difficult to treat for a multitude of reasons. As with most personality disorders, people present for treatment only when stress or some other situational factor within their lives has made their ability to function and cope effectively impossible.

They are, however (unlike other people who suffer from personality disorders), much quicker to seek treatment and exaggerate their symptoms and difficulties in functioning. Because they also tend to be more emotionally needy, they are often reluctant to terminate therapy.

if what you say is correct about your diagnosis, then what I have said will make sense to you ok?

It's about not only accepting, but to agree and follow up with treatment. I believe that you can get help, but you must be honest at all time, (which I know is not easy for you to do). At least you have come this far, and i respect you for this.

I will pray that you get the help you need, and will also pray that you continue to work with your therapist.

What if a relative of yours seems to have a histrionic personality disorder but is diagnosed with anxiety?

Why must she take medication? Why is medication recommended for everything? If it's bad to pollute yourself with drugs and alcohol why do people advise drugs for a solution?
----------

He/she can have both.

Medication treats illness. You could just as well ask why diabetics "pollute their bodies" with medication. Without medication, severely mentally ill people lead miserable lives and sometimes kill themselves, just as a diabetic without medication just gets sicker and dies.  (+ info)

Natural cure for Histrionic Personality Disorder?

I found that I am suffering from a condition called Histrionic Personality Disorder for the past 5 years or so. I am glad to finally understand why I am the way that I am, but I cannot afford any therapy etc. Does anyone know any free psych help for people with no insurance or money, or any NATURAL remedies such as diet or certain meditation etc? <3
----------

A lot of areas have public mental health clinics that work with ppl who have no/low income and no insurance. There is a sliding scale based on income. You can call the hospital or ask around.

As for natural remedies-positive thoughts, mediation, prayer, journaling, exercise, staying busy with enjoyable things, trying to be nicer and more sociable, trying to improve and change the way you think.

Diets won't change your personality disorder eating healthy will make your body more healthy.  (+ info)

can you have Histrionic Personality Disorder in episodes rather than be symptomatic all the time?

I seem to be fine until something happens and I over react. It can be anything like people smoking on the bus or my mum making a tiny comment, anything!
I've got most of the symptoms apart from the sexually provocative side of it. I've had symptoms since age of 13 and I'm now 28. I've been diagnosed with Cyclothymia and a "personality disorder".
----------

Unfortunately, you don't give any details.
Were you diagnosed with HPD? What kaes you think that you suffer from it? What are the symptoms and circumstances of their occurrence?

You also didn't give your age. Personality disorders are diagnosed only after 18, but first symptoms must occur before this age and constitute a stable pattern.
It is true that symptoms are more visible when a person is under stress, but as I've mentioned, I don't have any arguments to prove or to disprove your point.

If you are so unsure, maybe turn to clinical psychologist or psychiatrist and tell them about your doubts. Or find DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for HPD and see if they apply to you.

Best wishes!  (+ info)

Do you know anyone who has histrionic personality disorder?

According to the definition, they are self-centered, approval seeking, dramatic, manipulative, have a lack of empathy for others and are obsessed with how they look, sometimes giving off sexual vibes. How do you deal with this type of person on a daily basis?
----------

it is sad that you asked "how do you DEAL with TYPE of person". they didn't choose to has this DISORDER. i have borderline personality with histrionic traits!

HISTRIONIC PERSONALITY DISORDER:
Causes
The cause of this disorder is unknown, but childhood events and genetics may both be involved. It occurs more frequently in women than in men, although some feel it is simply more often diagnosed in women because attention seeking and sexual forwardness are less socially acceptable for women than for men. People with this disorder are usually able to function at a high level and can be successful socially and at work. They may seek treatment for depression when romantic relationships end. They often fail to see their own situation realistically, instead tending to overdramatize and exaggerate. Responsibility for failure or disappointment is usually blamed on others. Because they tend to crave novelty and excitement, they may place themselves in risky situations. All of these factors may lead to greater risk of developing depression.

Diagnostic Evaluation

A diagnosis can be made by knowing the patient's history and by doing a psychological examination.

Individual displays five or more of the following criteria:

1.Is uncomfortable in situations in which he or she is not the center of attention
2.Interaction with others is often characterized by inappropriate sexually seductive or provocative behavior
3.Displays rapidly shifting and shallow expression of emotions
4.Consistently uses physical appearance to draw attention to self
5.Has a style of speech that is excessively impressionistic and lacking in detail
6.Shows self-dramatization, theatricality and exaggerated expression of emotion
7.Is suggestible, that is, easily influenced by others or circumstances
8.Considers relationships to be more intimate than they actually are.

of the things listed i have 1,4,6 & 7! because i dont have a 5 or more of the sysptoms to meet the criteria i am only diagnosed with traits of this disorder.

please keep in mind this is a DISORDER. i dont choose to live my life this way...it is a learned disorder steming from horrible childhood abuse. i tend to put on an act more than anything, not act like my true self. i put on a happy face regardless of what is going on in my life. i do like to be the "life of the party", i do take GREAT care of myself to assure i ALWAYS look my best. i will not leave the house without my hair done and make-up on! NEVER! i do blame others for SOME of my mistakes...there is so much i could right here...

i am human just like you, i just look at life with a different view. i was taught that, i learned to be this way...with that said, i have been in therapy for the past 25yrs. i take tons of meds for not these disorders but for others as well. i take responsiblity for my actions. learn all i can to become more of the person i long to be. i feel pain, i get hurt, sad, lonely, happy, overwhelmed, have had my heart broken, been in love...just like anyone one else on this earth! just because i have this disorder shouldnt put me in a group, a class, or a TYPE of human being!

my fiance lives with me very well, he supports me with my mental illness, loves me the way i am. he doesnt judge me, he doesnt think of me as different type of human being! I AM JUST HUMAN!

i am NOT being mean in any way, just letting you there is more to people than just their disorders!
(sorry for all the type O's) in a hurry  (+ info)
