What hip injuries can you get from falling off a horse?

Aside from breaking the hip, what bad injuries can a person get in their hip from falling off a horse?

I'm writing a story, and I want my character to have a bad hip injury that would lead to complications -- possibly arthritis or something. Can anyone suggest something?

Thanks very much!

Falling off a horse sideways and landing on their side. Could result in a dislocated hip causing arthritis or hip joint deterioration.

Thrown off to the front (flipping over the horse's head) they could shatter their pelvis, tailbone or vertebrae.

Thrown off to the rear (due to the horse rearing up) the horse could flip over and the saddle horn could cause severe internal damage to organs etc. due to the full weight of the horse landing on them.  (+ info)

What kind of hip injuries from falling down stairs?

My question is: what kind of hip injuries can you get from falling down stairs?

Like any other injury... either a bruise to the tissues or a bone bruise. More serious type injuries involve fractures to the hip that require surgery.  (+ info)

What kind of hip injuries can you get from falling down the stairs?
Injuries that are quite painful but doesn't require any surgeries
specifically,
thank you

you can bruise the bone
you can have swelling of the tissues around the hip
you can dislocate a hip. you don't always need surgery to fix that. a Dr can give you conscious sedation (awake but relaxed) and pop in back into place. that is called a closed reduction.
you could also have a femur fracture. those are mostly surgically fixed. if you fractured the pelvis those are allowed to heal on their own. and of course you can fracture the hip. hope this helps  (+ info)

Falling down stairs is kind of random, you could hurt almost anything depending on how you land and how far you fall.  (+ info)

Does anyone know about hip injuries?

I went jogging about two months ago and I stepped on a large rock in an awkward way. Ever since then, when I run my hip hurts after a while and it hurts for the rest of the day. I'm tired of not being able to play football 100%. It doesn't seem to improve. Can it be anything serious? What should I do??
----------

Sounds like it could lead to a chronic problem. I recommend you see a medical specialist for your condition and have them perform a diagnostic test. That way, you can find out the nature & extent of the problem and a treatment plan can be formed.

Good luck.  (+ info)

why does my hip start hurting when I take long walks?

It performs fine on a bicycle, and standing a long time at work. I think it is coming out of socket or something on long walks. It then hurts badly for several hours after this happens. I have to sit is crazy positions to keep it from doing what feels like bone on bone pain. I have no previous hip injuries. I cant understand what is wrong with it. any ideas???

Hm, you might have one leg that is shorter than the other, that can cause pain like this. you should see you doctor for treatment, she/he will probably give you an x-ray and send you to an orthopaedist.  (+ info)

Compared to the shoulder and hip joints, in what way is the knee joint poorly protected and therefore especial?

Compared to the shoulder and hip joints, in what way is the knee joint poorly protected and therefore especially vulnerable to injuries?
----------

It is not the knee but the shoulder joint which is more likely to get dislocated because of less bony support around it,the hip is quite stong since it is got a bony surrounding [the acetabulum] and the strongest ligament in the body, the knee is surronded by various tendons and ligaments to give support, the ACL and the PCL also form a good support.Knee dislocations are very rare ,but knee injuries are very common since people commonly fall on the knees  (+ info)

What can cause a sudden throbbing hip pain?

I have not had any recent injuries to my hip. I have recently started a new job that requires hours of driving. Could this be the problem?
----------

Most definitely, a long period of sitting will do the trick. I have the same problem with pain because I sit alot and study and I am less active now.  (+ info)
