How do I detox from heroin at home? Can I get a prescription to help? How can I get through the withdrawels?

Would a dihydrocodeine script help? I do have to have a tooth pulled because it is cracked in half. When they prescribe pain meds will this help? I have kicked heroin for 9 years but began again after some really bad things that have happened in my life. I don't have a full addiction, I just don't want to go through the withdraw. The dentist will likely prescribe a vicadin. What do u think?
----------

If you want to detox at home or in secret (whatever), than what i would recommend is going to a walk in clinic or talk to doctor that specializes in these things. You could get a prescription for Suboxone (Best Recommendation) This will get the most severe opiate addict off the substance and without withdraw. (Suboxone will stop withdraw and block you endorphins in your brain from letting you get high when you take heroin or what not while your on Suboxone. One thing is that if you are high and then take Suboxone it will put you through full withdraw instantly so be careful. Another common way is getting Methadone from a walk in clinic. Either will help you, but the best is going cold turkey.....if you can handle that.  (+ info)

What similarities are shared between vicodin and heroin?

Vicodin and heroin are both opiates. I want to know what similar effects they have on the body. Also, if they are similar, how many heroin addicts realize this? why choose to do heroin instead of taking vicodin when heroin is so much more dangerous? I don't understand it.
----------

Or if you are on heroin try getting off of it! Try prescription drugs like Methadone or Suboxone! You can die from heroin withdrawals and switching to Vicodin (which is not as potent) is not a good idea. Being addicted to Vicodin (which has Tylenol aka acetaminophen in it) is still horrible. That is an easy overdose and kill of the liver if you take over 4000mg per day (8 regular Vicodin tablets). Vicodin=Lortab just so everyone knows. Same active ingredients. Lortab 5mg=Vicodin. You seem as though you are suggesting people to get over one addiction with another addiction not monitored with the doctor and that is extremely unsafe no matter what the drug.  (+ info)

What are the tell-tale signs that someone is addicted to heroin?

I think my brother takes heroin, as I know his friends do. How will I be able to tell for sure without having to ask him?
----------

Have you noticed changes in his appearance? If his eyes are always red and his pupils dilated, this might be a sign. Drastic loss or gain of weight are also signs. See if his personality has changed too. If he was once placid and is now violent, or if his grades have recently been declining. If he possesses drug paraphernalia, that's a big clue too. Be on the lookout for tourniquets, foils, pipes, syringes. If these signs are evident in your brother, talk to him about this and tell your parents. Good luck!  (+ info)

How can I convince a person to undergo heroin detox?

My cousin has been dependent upon heroin. I care about her a lot and I want her to get better. How can I convince her to get heroin detox?
----------

Heroin detox isn't all she needs. Heroin gives its users a wave of euphoria and she might be lured to try it again. Intervention might work, it might make her agree to get detox and then treatment. Rehabilitation might be necessary, at least you would be sure that she would not be getting any heroin supply in the treatment center. Have her see that she's only wasting her life by relying on heroin. It's not going to do her any good at all. Point out to her that she once lived her life without the drug, she could also do that now. She doesn't want to be controlled by it forever, does she? She can do so much more. Make her realize this.  (+ info)

What treatments do they use in hospitals for heroin addicts?

No, I'm not a heroin addict. However, I would like to know some more information on treatments that use for heroin addicts in hospitals. Help please?
Any treatments.
Don't leave an answer that is stupid or judgmental.
----------

As a general rule, no hospital will attempt treatment unless/until addicted person has enrolled in rehab program. Not everyone needs or has hospital treatment, but those who do are there a short time for detoxification. Their physical and mental status is closely monitored and they are medicated as indicated (not with the addicted substance).
Withdrawal (in some instances) can be life-threatening if not accompanied by medication.  (+ info)

How different is snorting or smoking heroin from injecting it?

Will smoking or snorting heroin not cause individuals to become addicted to it?
----------

Injection of heroin produces faster effects. The smoked or snorted kind of heroin is purer than the ones injected. This can still lead to addiction. In some cases, smoking or snorting heroin has led to such tolerance that the user eventually turns to injecting it. If you're planning on trying heroin, be it through snorting, smoking, or injecting, don't. It will only cause you harm.  (+ info)

How long does it take for heroin to get out of your system?

When you take heroin how long does it take for it to get it out of your system?
----------

A persons height, weight, metabolism and the amount of the drug taken are all factors of how long heroin will stay in your system.

(Like alcohol how it takes women less drinks to get drunk then it does men)

Heroin can last on average as little as 48 hours for the lighter users and can last up to 5-7 days in heavy users.

The biggest factor is how often you use and the amount you use the longer you use the longer it takes to leave your body. It will stay in your system for 2-4 days (average) . Heavier users will most likely take close to a week.

Heroin can be cleaned out of your system, but it will stay in your hair. If you are going through a hair test, heroin can be detected even if you've used it months ago. Hair has the longest testing time.  (+ info)

What is it like to suffer from heroin addiction?

I am working on the revision of my book Broken Families Broken Homes. I am adding a chapter on substance abuse and I would like to hear if the risk of HIV and hepatitis is a deterrant to shooting up with heroin. If so how strong? What is the effect of the drug on your life and what precludes you from seeking help. Are you currently administering the drug in other ways?
----------

No addict cares about the risk of infection. They just want to get high. Alot have a death wish so the risk of disease that could kill them is an added bonus. Most heroin addicts have attempted to quit many times and it is the terrible withdrawal that brings them back. Most know they are addicted and don't want to quit. It is a lifestyle not just an addiction. Many use it to numb both physical and emotional pain. As they approach rock bottom and lost almost everything they care even less and just keep getting high until they die, go to jail or do quit. I know many who don't do heroin anymore but have been on methadone for over 20 years. Many start with pills, then smoking it and then needles and once they start running they don't back to crawling. Many love the rush of the needles, not the drugs in them. I knew one girl that would shoot up Vodka.  (+ info)
