Can this affect your central nervous system?

I was diagnosed with ehlers danlos syndrome (classical type) on 4/3/08. Anyway, I've also been having a lot of gastrointestinal issues, electric shocks, tingling, dizziness, panic attack type symptoms, cognitive problems, etc...Symptoms similar to lyme disease or MS. Anyway, my doc thinks it could be my EDS affecting my CNS. Do you think that could be it? She said there's a team of neurologists in NY who are doing studies on the connection between EDS and the CNS. Thanks!
----------

Though I'm also not familiar w/ this syndrome, the issues you described are a typical "laundry-list" of a disseminated Lyme infection. (tingling in the extremities?..."migrating" symptoms?)
I would go see another doc for a 2nd opinion & ask to have the bloodwork for Lyme tesitng sent to a top-notch lab like MDL in NJ, or IGeneX in CA.
IF it IS determined to be Lyme, you need to start on appropriate abx ASAP to reverse the infection.
Beware: With any spirochetal disease, the recovery process means you will 1st get sicker before you get better, due to symptoms caused by the die-off.
But you WILL get better! Best of luck.  (+ info)

Can smoking marijuan cause damage to the central nervous system and impair coordination?

Can weed cause you to develop a permanent movement disorder, neurological disorder or nervous system disorder?
----------

Absolutely!  (+ info)

How does the Central nervous system respond to lets say a ball being thrown at you?

The events coordinated by teh nervous system in response to this event, pathways of information flow, the regiosn of teh CNS involved, etc.
----------

visual cortex preceives the event, message is sent to the arms to stretch and grab the ball through the spinal cord and preipheral skeletal muscle nerves, next thing you know, the ball is in your hands! good luck  (+ info)

What's the difference between the central and peripheral nervous system?

I'm having a hard time understanding the difference. Can someone give me a simple description on them.
Also, which system are you using when you move your hand away from a hot stove?
What are some examples for them both?
----------

CNS is brain and spinal cord. PNS are the sensory and motor neurons. The PNS breaks down further into the autonomic and the sensory-somatic nervous system. The autonomic breaks down further into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. It is very complex but to answer your question when you touch a hot stove sensory neurons (PNS) send a message to the brain (CNS) and the brain process that the hand is being injured and reacts by sending motor neurons (PNS) to tell the hand to pull away. Good Luck.  (+ info)

The disease rabies is caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system. The virus is normally?

introduced by an animal bite that breaks the surface of the skin. Since the virus is not motile, why is it located in the central nervous system?
----------

Actually, the Rhabdovirus is l
"located" in other tissues, hence it can be transmitted by blood, saliva, and even tissue: There are at least 8 cases of known infection related to corneal transplants.
The most unusual property of this virus is that it can take up to 8 years to produce symptoms.
The central neurological symptoms are manifested to to the affinity of neuro tissue for replication and the "amplification" of replication causes symptoms(confusion, delirium, hallucinations).
By proximity to a wound to peripheral nervous tissue, the virus spreads to the brain and spinal cord via "axoplasmic flow"
This is an natural, against the stream channel(access) that parallels the peripheral nervous system.  (+ info)

Does MS only attack the Central Nervous System?

I have been diagnosed with Sensory Neuropathy with no explination for its cause. I was wondering if Musltiple Sclerosis only attacks the central nervous system or does it also attack the peripheral nervous system as well?
----------

MS is a central nervous system disease. It does not involve the peripheral nerves.  (+ info)

How do STD's affect the Central Nervous system?

i am doing a project for health, and i have to be an expert on how std's affect the CNS, central nervous system. like the brain and spinal cord etc
----------

The most common one you can cite is how tertiary (late stage) syphilis destroys the brain. Look up the term "neurosyphilis."

Secondly there's a rare complication of genital herpes called herpes encephalitis. The virus causes an inflammation in the brain, which can be life-threatening. Look up "herpes encephalitis" for more info.  (+ info)

Is Derealization and depersonalization a Central Nervous System disorder?

Say There's something mildly wrong with the CNS...or thought patterns of a person and they are always scared and worried.
They now have anxiety and dd disorders as above in the question.
This is all because of childhood trauma....Im trying to get help but i just need to know if these disorders are anyway linked to the Central Nervous System and how?
Thank You Everyone :D
----------

They can be caused by the CNS but not likely.
These are disorders of the mind and aused through emotional problems such as truama or negative thought patterns.

Alcohol slows down your central nervous system. What the heck does that mean?

Does it mean it makes you nervous, or more nervous. Or does that have nothing to do with it. What does it mean to slow down your central nervous system??
----------

Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, that is, a drug that slows down the nervous system. As you drink, alcohol enters your bloodstream and affects your brain, where it alters your response time, your motor responses, reflexes, and balance, your muscle control, your judgment and ability to delay or inhibit your words and actions, and your emotions. Although alcohol use in moderation is considered socially acceptable in many parts of our culture today, excessive use and/or abuse of alcohol is associated with significant problems, for the individual and for society.

Here's another way of saying this in a simplified way:

Alcohol affects the nervous system. It slows down the transmission of messages leading to a variety of behavioral changes.
Alcohol slows down the time for the body to react. Thus, drivers who drink are more likely to cause accidents. Legally, there is zero tolerance for teenagers to have any blood alcohol level for driving.  (+ info)

Do plants have a central nervous system that enables them to feel pain?

I am a vegetarian, and my uncle continues to argue that plants feel as much pain as any animal. I did some research on the subject, but I can't find a straight answer. Please help me!
----------

Nope, you are correct, plants cannot feel pain!

Plants have no nervous system whatsoever. Their reactions to the enviroment are strictly cellular and chemical. Even if they had a nervous system, they have no brain to interpret the pain signals. But that's just "What If" thinking. It's like saying "Well if the earth is flat we'd swim over the side". The point is, the earth is round. Plants don't feel pain. End of discussion.

On a side note: if your uncle is so concerned about plants, that's even MORE of a reason to be vegetarian. After all, the animals he eats eat plants too. But they eat a grain-intensive diet that requires not only tons and tons of plants to maintain weight, but also to gain weight VERY rapidly for slaughter. If you total up all the plants a cow eats, and then divide it by how many pounds of meat it actually produces, it requires well over 12 pounds of plants to make a pound of meat. And not to mention all that water - 2,500 gallons of it! Pigs require about 6 pounds of grain per pound of meat, and even chicken requires 2 1/2 pounds or so per pound of meat produced.

That means that meat is calorically inefficient. Western countries in particular have notorious industries that buy grain from foreign countries that export their staple crops at a cheap price while their people starve. We feed those grains NOT TO PEOPLE but the animals, so that we can have the luxury of meat at our plate. If you look at poverty trends worldwide, the poorer a country is, the less likely anyone's eating meat, and it's especially likely that their corrupt leaders export their home-grown crops to countries like Britain and the USA, and the money pools at the top so that the rich can get richer and the poor keep dying.
