are their cases of people who have died from hemolysis?

hemolysis if gets severe, can cause death. one example is in fetus with + rh that is growing in the womb of a previously sensithized mother, transmission of antibody from mother to the fetus can cause a hemolysis that will make the baby anemic, with cardiac failure, mental retarded, ... or evan kill the fetus or baby if we dont do any intervention.  (+ info)

what is the intervention for hemolysis?

You must determine the underlying cause and correct it
some hemolysis are due a destruction of the red blood cell (RBC)by the spleen, it could be bcause it has a weak membrane (spherocitosis or sickle cell anemia) or the spleen is creating antibodies against the RBC (autoinmune hemolytic anemia). In this cases the intervention is to remove the spleen.Another cause of RBC destruction is when it gets stocked in the vessels bcause there is something that not allows the normal flow of blood (trombus in the vessel, due to trombocitopenic trombosis or diseminated intravascular coagulation).
SOmetimes it's due to a inmune reaction to a drug, for example the antibiotics beta lactams (like penicillines and cephalosporin) can cause hemolisis by binding to the RBC and causing them not to be recognized as own cells by the inmune system. In this case the intervention is to remove the drug
Or you can get a hereditary disease in wich the RBC is less tolerant to oxidative stress, like Glucose 6 phospate deficiency and the treatment is to remove the oxidative agent (could be a sulfa drug, quinines, fava beans, etc). At last, some bugs can cause hemolysis, like plasmodium (the cause of malaria). Other causes are hemolitic syndrome of the newborn, destuction of the RBC by endogenous toxins (hemolitic uremic syndrome).
Bottom line: You must know first the underlying cause, correct it and then transfuse if the hemolysis is life threatening, otherwise the body can cope with it and produce brand new RBC in a couple of weeks.  (+ info)

Rh - mothers who have a Rh+ fetus will receive rhogam (an anti Rh Ab-IgG).Doesn't it cause hemolysis in fetus.

wat is hemolysis? pls. discuss its characteristics.?

Hemolysis is when red blood cells break open due to various kinds of stress (shaking a blood tube, difficult venipuncture, etc) and they spill their contents into the blood plasma. This turns the normally yellow and clear plasma to a crimson red color depending upon the degree that hemolysis has occurred. Hemolysis will affect a number of blood tests including significantly raising Potassium, interfering with Bilirubin analysis as well as Lactic Acid, Magnesium and Aspartate Aminotransferase.  (+ info)
