Can you give yourself a epidural hematoma or subdural hematoma?

I have OCD/ADD and and after hearing about Nastasha Richardson I am a little scared about it. I do jerk and shake my head cuz of my OCD/ADD alot and give myself a headache. Let me know!
----------

Hematomas require that blood vessels be ruptured. A severe blow to the head can cause this to happen.

The brain has a number of protective mechanisms that prevent cranial blood vessels from being damaged. Your brain is surrounded by a liquid cushion of fluid and is held in place by strong tissues to prevent excessive movement.

Even the strongest shake by your own muscles are far, far below the amount of force required to rupture any blood vessels in your brain. A very strong blow from an outside source such as a baseball bat or crashing into something while skiing is required to produce the kind of damage necessary for a hematoma in your head. You are perfectly safe.  (+ info)

Can subungual hematoma lead to my finger being cut off?

It has been two weeks since i slammed my finger in a heavy door. I went to the doctors and got a hole cut in my nail to relieve pressure. Now the skin near my nail is red of blood. I dont know what to do.
----------

eventually, the nail will fall off and you'll grow a new one, it might be soft at first, so try a bandaid.  (+ info)

Has anyone had a subdural hematoma from an auto accident that did not need surgery?

I had a left frontal subdural hematoma, but it resolved on it's own....I did lose my sense of smell from it....has anyone had a subdural or subarachnoid bleed that resolved on it's own? And as a result, did you have any remaining symptoms? Thank you...
MSTESS......that is exactly the same injury I had, a motor vehicle accident with rollover and ejection!
----------

My daughter had a serious head injury about 3 1/2 years ago. She was ejected from a car when it rolled. She had severe fractures to her skull. A depressed skull fracture and a basilar skull fracture. She was deaf in one ear for a few weeks from a CSF leak. Like you, she had a bleed that resolved on it's own. She didn't lose her sense of smell, but it messed up the way things taste. She says things just taste different now. The only other thing we notice is her memory is a little sketchy.

That is her only problem, as far as her head. She still has problems with her neck. (She broke it in 2 places) She still gets alot of headaches, but that is probably her neck. She's still having problems with her leg. Still more surgery to come.

Edit.......you two are very lucky you didn't get killed! Always wear your seatbelt! lol

On a sad note. My daughters friend who was also ejected, and had worse injuries from my daughter has died. Waiting for autopsy results to see if the past head injury was the cause. Scares the sh*t out of me. Apparentley, you're not out of the woods until 5-7 years have past.  (+ info)

Do people with a hematoma in the brain react the same as a person with a brain tumor?

In both cases an extra mass is present in the brain, creating pressure due to lack of space. So, in what ways do the patients react differently ?
----------

The mass or hematoma may cause symptoms based on their location. Tumors tend to be more slow growing so symptoms may take a while to appear. Hematomas are usually acute due to trauma and will cause more acute symptoms with change in mental status.  (+ info)

What is the preferred treatment for a large hematoma on the shin caused by trauma?

The area on the shin is large (3 inches by 2 inches) and very swollen and hasn't changed for 3 months. Doctor says it may take 6 months to "go down" and that, if not, it may need to be "drained".
----------

The doctors are right. I developed one on my shin after a wreck. 6 months later it was flat and only minorly discolored, 8 months later it was no longer painful to the touch and the coloration had gone, 10 months later it no longer hurt to run. It does take a while, I would wait as long as you can to decide to get it drained, because I was told this can be painful. But if there's absolutely no change in color or size after 7 months, you may want to go for it, cause that's about when the calcification process starts (Eventually it will turn hard.) Healing time also depends on where the hematoma is located. If there is mostly bone and not alot of muscle mass, it may not take as long (i.e. top of foot, hand, etc.) In areas with much muscle mass and fat, it may take a long time, because the muscle absorbs all the protein.

Here's what you can do to hurry it a little:

Fill a styrofoam cup with water and freeze.

Tear the top rim off so a half inch or so protrudes like chapstick.

Massage the hematoma lightly with this ice for 15 minutes at a time, 3 to 4 times daily.

At night, use some form of localized heat, that can be comfortable and not dangerous or painfull. This will help promote bloodflow in that area.

DON'T rub or massage the area, you may make the area bleed again under the skin, starting you back at day 1.

Eat a diet rich in protein.

Get extra rest if the hematoma is on your legs or feet.

Good luck, I hope this helps you.  (+ info)

How long does it take a hematoma to heal?

Does this condition have any effect on the mucles surrounding it-
arm, hand and elbow. What are the symptoms if there is an infection?
This has been caused by a blood draw at the elbow for a routine blood check up 4 weeks ago.Still have pain which increases when the hand is exerted. Has burning sensation sometimes and muscle tenderness on the outerside of the arm and slight swelling/stiffeness on the innerside of the forearm and the elbow
Been to 2 pcp's said it will go away and been to a vascular surgeon who didn't say any different and never checked what the symptoms were and did not give me any satisfactory answers which I expected from an expert!). Hence with no answers I am troubled more than ever. This situation is interfering with my daily activities and with people around me.
Please give me serious advice to help with my concerns with your experiences or checking with your doctor friends.
This would mean a lot to me and I will have peace of mind.
Thanks for your time
----------

It sounds like you have a soft tissue hematoma in the antecubital fossa from where they stuck a vein. Sometimes after blood draws, the vessel will continue bleeding under the skin. This eventually stops.

Signs of infection would be redness over the area that blanches to white when you press it, warmth to the touch, and perhaps drainage of purulent (pus-like) yellow fluid.

If it's a simple swelling without signs of infection, I would agree with the PCP's and the vascular surgeon. It's just a matter of time for your body to reabsorb the blood. A vascular surgery consult was probably not necessary as those guys mostly do work on the arteries and there is nothing really surgical to do for what you've got. The burning sensation is likely due to inflammation around that area.

To help improve clot lysis (breakdown of the hematoma) you can put warm compresses over it. This may contribute a little bit to more inflammation and pain, but it will resolve more quickly. If the hematoma is infected, it needs to be surgically drained.

Hope this helps.  (+ info)

how do i get rid of hematoma faster?

about a month ago i got hit in the face with a baseball and now i have hematoma in my cheek. i know it takes a long time to heal but i was wondering if theres any way to make it heal faster.
thnx! <3
ps i didnt go to the doctors yet for it.
also would it hurt if i got an injection in it? like would they numb it first?
----------

Well, my advice to you would be to go back to the doctor and ask for a needle aspiration of the blood from the hematoma.. At the same time hyaluronidase (an enzyme) can be injected into the hematoma space. Hyaluronidase hastens absorption of blood.

Otherwise, rubbing lightly with ice and massaging it will help.  (+ info)

Is my hematoma going to make my fingernail fall off?

i have a hematoma(blood clot) on my finger and i was wondering if it is most likely to make my fingernail fall off.
----------

Your fingernail won't fall off, but if you get it checked by a doctor he may have to remove your fingernail if it is bad enough.

Sorry.  (+ info)

i have dark spots all over my body due to hematoma. how can i get rid of those?

i got these everytime my boyfriend hits me. i have these for more than 6 months now.
----------

First of all why are tou with a guy who hits you. Know one has the right to touch you not even your parents let alone someone else. I do not know where you live but their are many crises center that will help you. When you bruse. there is no fix. They have to heal on their own.  (+ info)

i had a hematoma on upper arm months ago now throbbing pain what could it be?

i don't even remember hurting my arm but then a large bump and 3 weeks later it bruised. the doctor said it was a hematoma. but now if i use my arm alot it throbs-very painful and weak. the bump is still there.
----------

I would return to the MD and have it rechecked. It could be a blood clot. Don't let the MD make light of it...Good luck! RN  (+ info)
