what r my chances of getting a brain tumor from an epidural or spinal block?

I am 35 weeks and 3 days pregnant with twins and my doctor told me im having a c section for sure because one of my babies is breeched. when my mom had my sister she had an epidural and a few months later she found out she had a brain tumor which caused her to get cancer and passed away when I was young. I was wondering if it could have been fron the shot I am so scared the same will happen to me.

Is it true that when you have an epidural, hospitals remove your some of your spinal fluid and sell it?

I heard it was very common in Mexico and that they sell your spinal fluid for a lot of money. My aunt scared me since I had an epidural when I had my son about 9 months ago. Is it true? And that they only do it to pregnant women since they are considered "healthy" and they only want good spinal fluids. Does this happen here too in the U.S. w/o your knowing? How can you tell if you have had spinal fluid taken out?
----------

I know that in the US, spinal fluid is not sold for money.
To run tests, physicians only remove a 9-12 milliliters from adults (3-4 tubes at 3 ml/tube.)
In the lab where I work, we use most, if not all of it just to run the battery of tests. Any thing leftover (if any at all) is stored in case future tests are needed.
Once a certain amout of time has passed, we discard the leftover fluid to be sterilized and destroyed.

In epidurals, a small amount may be removed (to make room for the medication), however it would be discarded as well.

Physicians perform LPs (lumbar punctures) on lots of people for lots of reasons.
Removing too much fluid will cause severe headaches. Spinal fluid helps to cushion the brain.

I've never heard of the practice occurring in Mexico. Seems unlikely.

Its unlikely you would have an LP without your knowing it. It is an invasive procedure and your informed consent would be required. The needle leaves a visible hole where it enters the back and through into the spinal column.  (+ info)

What is the difference between spinal block and epidural?

As far as I know, it's two names for the same thing.  (+ info)

Does epidural or spinal block medicine affect the baby?

Does the pain medicine affect the baby negatively? Thanks for answers.
----------

No. It enters your spinal fluid, which is very strongly isolated from your blood- it is almost impossible for anything larger than oxygen to cross from one to the other. Passing the placental barrier is a bit easier, but it still would present a strong barrier to any medicine that might get into the blood.  (+ info)

Which is better an Epidural and Spinal Anesthesia?

Which has less risk?
Just the other day on the news a lady was given an overdose with her Epidural now she's paralyzed.
I plan on going natural but if I can't take the pain I would like to know what's a better option.

My brother in law had surgery and something went wrong with his Epideral too and he now has no feeling in his legs from his hips down. This is very rare, but it can happen. That happened over 6 years ago and he is slowly gaining some feeling back, but slow. I had a Spinal with my csection with no complications. I think there is a certain risk in either. If you can go all natural that would be great, but i don't think I would wory about it too much. You will drive yourself nuts!! Most doctors are careful and know what they are doing. I personally liked the Spinal block because it takes so much longer to wear off. I didn't like not being able to feel my legs though. That was kinda weird, but it does wear off. I wish you the best on whatever you decide. I wish you the best of the birth of your baby.  (+ info)

Can a cyctocele/rectocele/entrocele be repaired surgically under an Epidural or spinal anesthetic?

I hate General Anesthesia and I refuse to have Versed after the horrible reaction I had to it. (I write on every medical form that I'm highly allergic to versed so they don't give it to me.)
Doctors would you let me have this surgery like this? I don't mind being awake at all. I've had several surgeries awake under localized/regional anesthesia.

Absolutely.  (+ info)

Has anyone had problems with their epidural? Last time the anesthesiologist punctured my spinal cord.?

I am due with my 3rd child in a week and have had one baby without an epidural and the last one with one. However the blood patches and headaches from the epidural mistake was WORSE than labor. (Yes, if that is possible) Help? Likelyhood of this happening again?
----------

I didn't have a fun time with my epidural. I had one with my first child. It was horrible and I had a tough time walking for a few weeks after it and I had lingering pain for almost a year.

I would think the chances of it happening again are low, but do you need to have an epidural? I would skip it personally. I did with my son and I felt much better. I hope you have a great really low pain delivery! =)

Good Luck!!  (+ info)

What is the difference between the spinal anesthesia and the epidural during pregnancy/birth?

The spinal block is a one-time shot injected into the epidural space. It's shorter acting because it's a one time shot. The epidural involves a catheter that remains in the epidural space and delivers continuous medication to provide pain relief.  (+ info)

Is an epidural the same thing as a spinal tap?

Cause I don't want the thing they put in your back. Is there any thing else they give?
I am being induced soon and the Dr hasn't even discussed these things with me, which bothers me. I would have askded last apt but he rushed out for a delivery. Should I be concerned?

Why do ppl think they have the right to give an openion about being induced? That is so annoying. There are reasons they induce ppl.
----------

The Epidural is given into your spine, the only other type of pain relief that I am aware of is maybe some Demerol in the IV and I think it is simple Novocaine they inject into the opening of the vagina to relive the pain of tearing. I did not have an epidural or Demerol but I have had a spinal tap and it really is not that bad. Giving birth was way worse than a simple needle in the back. I wanted the epi, but my labor progressed too fast. For my labor was not that bad either but I can see why women would want the epidural! Call your hospital's maternity ward and ask, they are usually glad to answer questions!

Edit: A spinal tap is when a shunt is placed into the cavity between spine (bone) and cord to remove fluid for testing, an Epidural is the placement of a shunt in the same area to inject pain medication. The only difference between an epidural for vaginal vs C-section is placement for a C-section it is placed much higher.  (+ info)

Do you still have to lay flat on your back for 24 hours when you get an epidural or spinal anesthesia?

I know you did 25 years ago, is this still true today? I was told if I moved before 24 hours that I'd get a migraine headache.
I need to know this because I don't want General Anesthesia if I can avoid it for surgery.
And no way in HELL will I let anyone give me Versed, that's for sure!!!!
----------

Nope, not any more.

A spinal is an injection into a sac of fluid under the spinal cord:

If a hole remains in the sac, and spinal fluid leaks out, it can cause a headache. It's not a migraine, it's called a post dural-puncture headache (PDPH). They're pretty rare from spinal anesthesia, because we use needles with special points that leave less of a hole in the sac. They're fairly common when non-anesthesiologists do spinal taps, or some radiology procedures that involve injection into the spinal fluid.

The top picture here is the older style needle that is more likely to cause PDPH; the other 2 are pencil point needles that are much less likely to do so:

(I'm a Whitacre gal, myself!)

I don't know if lying flat actually prevented headaches back then, or just delayed them for 24 hours.
