HELLP syndrome during pregnancy?

has anyone suffered from HELLP syndrome during a pregnancy, if so what symptoms did you have, how were you diagnosed and what ended up happening?? info much appreciated
thank you
----------

Overview
HELLP syndrome is a group of symptoms that occur in pregnant women who have:

•H -- hemolysis
•EL -- elevated liver enzymes
•LP -- low platelet count
Symptoms
•Headache
•Nausea and vomiting that continues to get worse
•Upper abdominal pain
•Vision problems
Treatment
The main treatment is to deliver the baby as soon as possible, even if premature, since liver function in the mother gets worse very quickly. Problems with the liver can be harmful to both mother and child.
Causes
HELLP syndrome occurs in approximately 10% of pregnant women with preeclampsia or eclampsia. HELLP syndrome is associated with more serious cases.

Many women have high blood pressure and are diagnosed with preeclampsia before they develop HELLP syndrome. However, in some cases, HELLP symptoms are the first warning of preeclampsia and the condition is misdiagnosed as hepatitis, gallbladder disease, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, or thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.
Tests & diagnosis
During a physical examination, the doctor may discover upper abdominal tenderness, especially in the right upper side. The liver may be enlarged.

Liver function tests (liver enzymes) may be elevated. Red blood cell and platelet counts may be low.
Prognosis
When the disease is not treated early, up to 25% of women develop serious complications. Without treatment, a small number of women die. The death rate among babies born to mothers with HELLP syndrome varies and depends on birth weight and the development of the baby's organs, especially the lungs. (See also: Prematurity)
Complications
The mother's liver may bleed (hemorrhage). Permanent liver damage may occur if delivery is delayed. Such damage can lead to death.
When to contact a doctor
See your obstetrician immediately, call the local emergency number (such as 911), or get to the emergency room if the symptoms above occur during pregnancy.

Although there is no known way to prevent HELLP syndrome, it is important for all pregnant women to start prenatal care early and continue it through the pregnancy. This allows the health care provider to find and treat conditions such as HELLP syndrome early.  (+ info)

Has anyone suffered from HELLP syndrome and had a normal pregnany afterwards. Any comlications?

I had preeclampsia that turned into HELLP syndrome,(Hemoloysis,Elevated Liver Enzymes, Low platlet count). I had my baby at 35 weeks. I was told I was VERY lucky to be alive and I should definitely think twice about anymore kids. But, I know some have tried and it either went ok or it ended badly(w/ subsequent pregnancys). I also have high BP that went down for a bit but then crawled back up. I've had scans of my kidneys, liver...but im ok. Dr.'s have no other explanation other than HELLP syndrome. But I'm only 25, and I think I might really want to try again once I hit 30.
----------

My friend had that with her first but had two more healthy children...all were born at least four weeks early though...and the first two had bad jaundice but otherwise fine. I would talk to a couple of doctors and get a couple of opinions and then take all of those into consideration  (+ info)

HELLP syndrome - has anyone had this...?

Hi, last year with the birth of my son I had severe preclampsia, HELLP syndrome and hemmorhaged. Has anyone had this and then went on to have a normal second labor and delivery. Thanks!
----------

Yes. I have that every day.  (+ info)

did you have hellp syndrome?

does anyone know how common it is to get hellp syndrome? I know that I'm at an increased risk because I have preeclampsia but I was curious because over the past few days I have had pretty uncomfortable lower back pain almost like I have a kidney infection only the pain is a little higher up I think and a pain underneith my right breast and behind my upper ribs on my right side. sometimes that pain is an ache and other times it is a shooting pain.
----------

I had pregnancy induced hypertension when I was pregnant with my son. They put me on meds for the high blood pressure and bed rest, when I did not get any better. I had to go for lots of check ups and to a specialist, because my son was not growing at a normal rate. I'm not sure if you have to do 24 hour urine collection or not, but I had too so they could be on top of my protein levels. The only symptom I had when everything went bad, was just feeling plain tired. It went straight to hellp syndrome. It happened that quick for me. They had to deliver my son immediately. He was 4 weeks early, but fine. It took me over a week in the hospital to recover. So please, call your dr asap if you feel anything out of the ordinary. I was lucky to have an appointment that day and drop off my 24 hr collection. I'm not sure on the statistics, but please talk to your dr.  (+ info)

hellp syndrome anybody else!?

I had hellp syndrome in my last pregnancy and wonder if anybody else has had this and what info there is on it!
----------

HELLP syndrome is a rare but serious illness in pregnancy. This illness can start quickly, most often in the last three months of pregnancy (the "third trimester"). It can also start soon after you have your baby. Women with HELLP syndrome may have bleeding problems, liver problems and blood pressure problems that can hurt both the mother and the baby. The cause of HELLP syndrome is not known. It is aso not known who will get it. Any pregnant woman can get this illness. Most women have blood pressure problems before they get HELLP syndrome. But you can get HELLP syndrome even if your blood pressure is normal. You're more likely to get HELLP syndrome if you're white and over 25 years of age. You are also more likely to get it if you have had children before or if you had a problem with a pregnancy in the past. The main treatment for HELLP is to deliver your baby. This may have to be done before your due date. Most women with this illness start to get better a couple of days after their babies are born. If you aren't too sick, your doctor may wait a few days before delivering your baby. You may have to take a steroid. This medicine helps both you and your baby.If you have bleeding, you may need blood transfusions or other treatments in the hospital. Some women with HELLP syndrome get very sick. Rarely, this illness is fatal. For more detailed in formation you should consult your doctor.
Hope this helps,

HELLP Syndrome (during pregnancy)????

I had the hellp syndrome while pregnant with my daughter 8 years ago and would love to have a baby now but the question I have is :
Has anyone out there had the hellp syndrome while pregnant and tried to conceive or had another baby? If yes then did you have hellp syndrome again?
I've asked many doctors and half said I wouldn't have a problem again and others said I would have it again.
I almost died giving birth and had to have an emergency c-section and was only 32 weeks pregnant. My daughter was 2 lbs and 15 oz. She also was dying too. She stayed in the hospital 1 mth 11 days. I also had to have my gal-bladder removed a 2 months after the c-section.
Has anyone had this problem and did you have anymore babies with any problems?
I'm remarried now and wanting to conceive so different partners

HELLP is is deadly complication which occurs in pregnancy "With Hypertension" what is called as Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.

Its great that u n ur baby recovered well.

HELLP - Haemolysis (rupture of Red cells in Blood) elevated Liver Enzyme (indicating liver damage), Low Platelet (indicating abnormality of blood coagulation system).

This complication is seen when there is uncontrolled high blood pressure during pregnancy.

Sooo... HELLP will occur only if there is UNCONTROLLED HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE accompanying pregnancy...so one should ask about the possibility of repeat Hypertension during pregnancy..

Hypertension that develops during pregnancy is most common in FIRST pregnancy, or pregnancy from a new partner, elderly pregnant lady, pregnant lady with family history of hypertension.

This doesnt means that every pregnant patient with hypertension will develop HELLP.

For you.. age factor is important, some doctors may advice you to take tablet aspirin 75 mg daily through-out pregnacy (upto 34wks if everything fine) and close watch on blood pressure reading...n if it is more then close watch to detect impending HELLP.

Dont be scared..u can try but with care. If ask HELLP will occur or not ...answer is difficult in term of Yes/No  (+ info)

i suffered from preeclampsia HELLP syndrome?

i know this is not a question but i believe it is something that everyone should know about!

most people who have a completely normal pregnancy like myself never ask about all of the rare diseases or syndromes!

i wish with everything in me that i would have!

i was told at 20 weeks that i was going to have a baby boy...
my dream come true!

it was everything id ever dreamed of sense i was a little girl!

then at only 23 weeks my world fell apart!

Not only was i diagnosed with preeclampsia, but I was also a victim of HELLP syndrome, which occurs in roughly 5% of women who get preeclampsia.

*Hemolytic anemia

*Elevated *Liver enzymes and

*Low *Platelet count

It is very rare, but can be fatal. Its incidence is reported as 0.2-0.6% of all pregnancies. Of women with (pre)eclampsia, 4-12% also develop signs of a "superimposed" HELLP syndrome. Mortality is 7-35% and perinatal mortality of the child may be up to 40%. HELLP usually begins during the third trimester, and usually in Caucasian women over the age of 25. (Padden, 1999.) Rarely, cases have been reported as early as 23 weeks gestation.

i guess i was just one of the really unlucky ones being that it im only 20 and my baby boy was born at 23 weeks which is the earliest it has ever been reported! they didnt give me a choice they said it couldnt wait or neither one of us would servive! there was nothing i could do for him and as his mom i felt like i was failing him! and i have to live with that forever! my blood pressure was 190/146 and my platelets had dropped to 41million/L when it is supposed over 100million/L. At that point they just told me what had to be done! and they didnt even know if id survive the c-section due to the low platelet counts(platelets are what clot the blood) so i could bleed to death in trying to save both myself and my unborn son!

i survived(obviously) and my son was born on March 31, 2009 at 9:47 p.m. He weighed 1lb 2oz and was 11in. long! The Dr. looked at me and my fiancee and said he might live a few hours if you are lucky!!! Let me tell you when i heard that my heart litterally stopped! for a moment i was mad at the doctors for saving me when they couldnt save him!!! i didnt want to live without that little boy! and i went and held his hand for hours! and then they came and told us he was proving the doctors wrong! but there is no way his lungs will make it a week! And again on Tues april 7, 2009 he proved them wrong! Not only still holding on, but gained weight! He weighed 1lb 5.5oz after that they didnt know what to say! i wanted them to say he was going to be okay buti knew they couldnt! they finally told us if he makes it another week we might be able to hold him! That made us optimistic. but Our baby boy past away on April 12, 2009 on Easter Sunday! I held him in my arms and god took him into his!!! My intention is not to scare anyone, I just want pregnant women and parents to cherish every moment with your baby and never take anything for granted! because coming from someone who was told every day that my baby wouldnt make it through the night, every single second counts! and i am thankful for every second i had with him! he was everything i could have asked for. He was perfect in every way! i dont know this is just my way of venting and trying to help someone else. im not saying specifictly this desease, but maybe something else. just make yourself aware! In my condition there is no way to stop or slow it down. but maybe in another case by making yourself aware of your risks you can prevent you from losing your baby! i dont know what to do, i have been crying non-stop, i just want my baby back! i want him in my arms! and this is only way i know to help someone else and that in some small way it helps me feel a little better!!!

As I sit here with tears in my eyes, I am heartbroken by the pain that you are forced in endure. I know all to well what you are going through as I lost twins in August at 21 weeks gestation b/c of problems with me and my body. The doctors would not even attempt to save them and the feelings of helplessness and failure were intense. We were able to hold them while they were still alive and for hours afterwards. Letting them go was the hardest most tragic experience of my life. To lose a child is nothing short of a tragedy. I know you feel cheated out of motherhood, cheated out of knowing your firstborn, cheated out of all the plans and dreams you had for your precious baby boy. Your heart is broken and your future has been shattered before you. This time will not be easy for you to get through, but you will get through it. Just know that you did not fail your child...you had no control over this series of events. This is not your fault. One day when you are ready, you will give your baby boy a brother or sister. You and you doctors will do things differently next time b/c of what you now know is possible.

Take each day one at a time. You will get through this. Again I am so sorry. This is such a horrible thing to have to endure. I hope you find a bit of solace knowing that your angel baby is looking down on you, smiling from Heaven and thanking you for giving him eternal life. You created him and he does exist and he is telling you how much he loves his Momma. You will hold him forever in your heart and will be reunited someday. I know it hurts so much for him not to be in your arms but he is so happy and joyous in Gods arms.

An Ugly Pair of Shoes
I am wearing a pair of shoes.
They are ugly shoes.
Uncomfortable Shoes.
I hate my shoes.
Each day I wear them, and each day I wish I had another pair.
Some days my shoes hurt so bad that I do not think I can take another step.
Yet, I continue to wear them.
I get funny looks wearing these shoes.
They are looks of sympathy.
I can tell in others eyes that they are glad they are my shoes and not theirs.
They never talk about my shoes.
To learn how awful my shoes are might make them uncomfortable.
To truly understand these shoes you must walk in them.
But, once you put them on, you can never take them off.
I now realize that I am not the other one who wears these shoes.
There are many pairs in the world.
Some women are like me and ache daily as they try and walk in them.
Some have learned how to walk in them so they don't hurt quite as much.
Some have worn the shoes so long that days will go by
before they think of how much they hurt.
No woman deserves to wear these shoes.
Yet, because of the shoes I am a stronger women.
These shoes have given me the strength to face anything.
They have made me who I am.
I will forever walk in the shoes of a woman who has lost a child.

Hellp syndrome and its risk?

My sister in law is 30 weeks pregnant and I just found out that she has hellp syndrome. I really don't know what this is and whats its risks are. They said they had to give the baby steroid shots and that once they wear off things can go down hill pretty fast. They also said that they may have to take the baby tomorrow. Can someone please give me what my sister in laws chances are and the babies. I ve been told that it can be deadly. Please they are in california and Im New york so i cant just get up and go see whats going. Please Thank you!
----------

HELLP syndrome is very dangerous, as it can lead to serious hemorrhage and clotting disorders. It's a condition of the liver, usually caused by severe preeclampsia. It affects clotting factors in the blood. And yes, her condition could deteriorate rapidly - but that has nothing to do with the steroid shots. The steroids are to mature the baby's lungs more quickly in anticipation that she will deliver the baby early. If they diagnosed her with HELLP, I would anticipate that they would deliver her once those steroids have been in her system for 24 hours.

Good luck to her.  (+ info)

Pregnancy - Preeclampsia- Hellp Syndrome- Liver pain (upper right quadrant)?

I am 30 weeks and have PIH- Dr.s are watching closely for Preeclampsia- I have been told to go to the Hospital if I experience Headaches that wont go away, Vision Disturbances, and pain in my upper abdomen ( which I know by research that is the liver - HELLP syndrome. My question is how bad of a pain are they talking about- is it just a quick stitch like a sharp poke? or is it constant cramping??? I am asking because I had some pain right below my right breast but it was only like a quick twinge and happened twice. I had an ultrasound yesterday and I know she is in a footling breach position and I was thinking she may just have her head up in my ribs. I really do not want to go to the hospital just for them to say i was just experiencing normal pregnancy symptoms. But i do not want to overlook something serious.
----------

It's a distinct, severe heartburn-like pain that is constant. It would be very obvious. It's nothing like you're describing.  (+ info)
