I had a heat stroke yesterday, what should i do to avoid it from happening again?

I had a heat stroke yesterday.It wasn't too severe,but I still feel sick.So I wanted to ask,should I workout?Because I can't walk much,i start having the symptoms of heat stroke after a few minutes walk.And i'm on medicine too.I also wanted to ask,what should I do to avoid a heat stroke again?
----------

Wearing light, long-sleeved shirts helps to protect your skin from direct exposure to the sun, and wide brimmed hats with vents do the same. Drink lots of fluids, in particular water. Not soda. Sports drinks may work depending on the ingredients; it needs to be mostly water. Don't guzzle it down bottle after bottle, just drink a little more than usual. If the water is cold, all the better. Rest regularly, and avoid alcohol and caffeine, since they constrict blood vessels and trap heat.

And above all, take rests whenever you feel tired or too hot.  (+ info)

How long do the symptoms of heat stroke last.?

I am curious as to how long the results of having a heat stoke can last. If I had a heat stroke on say a Tuesday morning will I still have symtoms the next day or will I start to feel better after my body temp drops.
----------

You should feel better the next day if you hydrated yourself and got some rest, but it may last a few more days, heatstroke can real drain your body, besure to take care of yourself and don't push it. Take it easy if you still dont feel good. Keep drinking plenty of soft drinks...  (+ info)

Does my body functions change after a heat stroke?

I am currently a Marine in the process of being medically discharged after two heat stroke episodes. I was suppose to deploy to Iraq this April. My concern is that I believe that I am in good health but I am told otherwise by my doc. I would like to think that my episodes has a temporary side effect. Anyone with knowledge of this would be appreciated.

While you can survive heat stroke the body is truly never the same after having it. Most people who experience true heat stroke often die within the first few months while others can last a year. Some potential chronic effects by ones that survive are CNS impairments, kidney problems, blood clots and lung problems.  (+ info)

Should I see a doctor for a recent heat stroke?

I suffered a mild heat stroke while doing military training 7 days ago and the next day heat exhaustion. I was treated by the medics both times with IV fluids, O2 and ice packs, but never evaluated by a doctor. Does anyone know if I should go see my doctor? Do I need an evaluation or anything? I'm also having knee surgery on thursday, is this a bad thing?
----------

I doubt your heat exhaustion that was treated properly.. will have any impact on your health or upcoming knee surgery. Cooling the body and more importantly the Saline fluids are all any hospital would do for the condition as well.

However, to be cautious, and prudent... give the Surgeon a heads up with your new addition to acute medical history. He/she will doubtfully reschedule, but you never can be too careful with your health.  (+ info)

How do you know if you've suffered heat stroke?

----------

NOT heat stroke....
Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat illness. It can occur even in people who are not exercising, if the weather is hot enough. These people have warm, flushed skin, and usually do not sweat. Athletes who have heat stroke after vigorous exercise in hot weather, though, may still be sweating considerably. Whether exercise-related or not, though, a person with heat stroke usually has a very high temeperature (106 degrees F or higher), and may be delirious, unconscious, or having seizures. These patients need to have their temperature reduced quickly, often with ice packs, and must also be given IV fluids for rehydration; they must be taken to the hospital as quickly as possible (EMS is appropriate here), and may have to stay in the hospital for observation since many different body organs can fail in heat stroke.

How can heat stroke be prevented?
There are precautions that can help protect you against the adverse effects of heat stroke. These include:

Drink plenty of fluids during outdoor activities, especially on hot days. Water and sports drinks are the drinks of choice; avoid tea, coffee, soda and alcohol as these can lead to dehydration.
Wear lightweight, tightly woven, loose-fitting clothing in light colors.
Schedule vigorous activity and sports for cooler times of the day.
Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat, sunglasses and using an umbrella.
Increase time spent outdoors gradually to get your body used to the heat.
During outdoor activities, take frequent drink breaks and mist yourself with a spray bottle to avoid becoming overheated.
Try to spend as much time indoors as possible on very hot and humid days.
If you live in a hot climate and have a chronic condition, talk to your physician about extra precautions you can take to protect yourself against heat stroke  (+ info)

What are some signs/symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke?

I was working outside this weekend and it was around 98 degrees. I got really tired pretty quick and my skin was red and splotchy. I just wanted to know if these were signs of heat exhaustion. Thanks!
----------

Symptoms could be absence of sweating, hot red flushed dry skin, difficulty breathing, confusion, agitation, nausea, vomiting, increased body tempt. If this occurs it is best to call 911. Get the person into a shaded area. Take as many of their clothes off as you can. If there is a water hose around then wet them down. If ice packs are available then put them under the arm pits and in the groin area. Get them some type of drink with electrolytes in it. If you have any avocado dip then try to get them to eat that, it is loaded with potassium. But make sure you call 911 if the person is lethargic.  (+ info)
