this website will give you a lot of valid information, but what you need to be aware of most is that it is HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS, easily transmitted. I wouldn't suggest sex or any other contact until you are over the illness.  (+ info)

My 3 year old has been diagnosed with Mouth Foot and Hand Disease?

and she has been sleepwalking for the first time tonight. There have been four episodes so far in the 3 hours she's been asleep. She goes straight for the front door and is crying, but obviously asleep. Does anyone know if this is just another symptom? I googled it and found nothing.
thanks Mr. Helpful, I keep getting the wording of it confused. I'd never heard of it before today.

I've known several children that have had Hand-Foot-and-Mouth disease. But never heard of sleep-walking as a possible symptom.

Simply an educated guess... hand-foot-and-mouth is supposedly pretty painful. Perhaps it's possible that this pain in manifesting itself in the sleep walking. Basically, the pain wakes her up, but she's so tired, she really stays asleep, but the pain makes her get up and walk around anyway.

Beyond that, I don't know much about sleep-walking (beyond knowing a few friends that have an individual in their family that occationally sleep walks, usually it's something very specific, such as raiding the fridge in their sleep.  (+ info)

Hand foot mouth disease 12 year old?

My 2 year old daughter had hand foot mouth disease about 5-6 days ago. She started out with the blisters on her hands and feet and then progressed to the mouth blisters. Now my 12 year old daughter has been complaining of a sore throat and when I looked in her throat there are blisters similar to what my 2 year old had in her mouth. She does not have any blisters on her hands or feet.
Is it possible for a 12 year old to get this disease? I thought it mainly affected children up to 4 years old.

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is caused by a number of enteroviruses in the family Picornaviridae. The most common cause is the Coxsackie A virus. HFMD is not to be confused with Hoof-and-mouth disease, which is a disease affecting sheep, cattle and swine, and which is unrelated to HFMD (but also caused by a member of the Picornaviridae family).

HFMD usually affects infants and children, and is quite common. It is highly contagious and is spread through direct contact with the mucus or feces of an infected person. It typically occurs in small epidemics in nursery schools or kindergartens, usually during the summer and autumn months.

HFMD is often incorrectly referred to as Hoof and Mouth Disease, which, although related, is caused by a separate virus that rarely afflicts humans.

[edit] Symptoms

Symptoms of HFMD include:

* fever
* rash in the mouth
* sores with blisters on palms of hands and soles of feet
* mouth ulcers
* sores or blisters may be present on the buttocks of small children and infants

Not all symptoms may be present.

[edit] Treatment

There is no specific treatment for hand, foot and mouth disease. Individual symptoms, such as fever, lameness and pain from the sores, may be eased with the use of medication. HFMD is a viral disease that has to run its course; many doctors do not issue medicine for this illness, unless the infection is severe. It is usually in the affected child's best interest to be kept home until the infection clears. Fever reducers will help to control high temperatures. Luke-warm baths will also help bring temperature down.

Only a very small minority require hospital admission, mainly as a result of neurological complications (encephalitis, meningitis or acute flaccid paralysis) or pulmonary edema/pulmonary hemorrhage.  (+ info)

Should I be concerned if I caught "hand, foot, mouth disease" from my son and I'm pregnant?

I'm waiting for my doctor to call back but would like to know what you think. I'm 26 weeks pregnant. Neither of us have been diagnosed but his cousin had it a little while ago and now he has blisters on his hands and so do I. If I do have it could it hurt my unborn baby?
If adults can't get it what are these sores on my hands? They haven't turned into blisters yet but are raised bumps on my fingers and palm and kinda feel like a splinter although there is no splinter.

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease and working with elderly?

My cousin's little boy got Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease and she contracted it from him. She works as a Nurse's Aide in a nursing home. Is it safe for her to keep working while she has symptoms? She was told by her supervisor that it was ok as long as she wears gloves, but I suspect they just don't want her taking a week off work.

Flying with Hand foot and Mouth Disease?

G'day,

I'm flying home to Australia tomorrow, and i think that my son may have Hand Foot and Mouth.
I'm worried that he may not be allowed to enter the country. We've been out of the country for close to 10 years and are greatly looking forward to returning home.

I know there are no specific treatments for HFMD other than pain-killers and plenty of fluids.
Does anyone know if it is still possible for us to travel tomorrow.

Thx,
TC

My baby had hand, foot and mouth disease and passed it on to me -- anyone familiar with this?

The doctor said it would clear up in 7-10 days, but the blisters are really painful -- especially on my hands!
----------

Sorry you are not feeling well. I'm not too familiar with the disease, but here is some information--
There's no specific treatment for hand-foot-and-mouth disease, and antibiotics aren't effective because it's a viral infection. The illness simply must run its course. To help lessen discomfort, doctors often recommend:

* Rest
* Plenty of fluids — milk-based fluids may be easier to tolerate than acidic liquids, such as juice or soda
* Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), if needed

Signs and symptoms of hand-foot-and-mouth disease usually clear up in seven to 10 days.

Help with hand foot mouth disease?

My 2 year old son has his 3rd case of hand foot mouth disease (we think it's that) in 10 months. That doesn't seem right to me. His pediatrician thinks it's strange, too, but isn't too concerned since he has been seeing quite a bit of these kinds of viruses lately. He gets blisters down his throat, inside of his mouth, his tongue, . . . I feel sooo bad for him! Has anyone else had this happen?
----------

It's a virus and most kids get it once or twice and are done with it. However, kids can re-infect and it may be a stronger strain of the virus.

It's a horrible virus and makes moms and dads feel very helpless! Has your doctor run any tests to be sure there is nothing else going on?  (+ info)
