How prevalent is hand, foot and mouth disease in the UK?

I hadn't heard of it until recently
----------

It is quite common and very contagious. It is however relatively harmless and will clear up after a week or so. Quarantine will keep it from spreading to others.

It is completely different to and totally unrelated to the foot and mouth disease which is found in farm animals.  (+ info)

Does hand foot and mouth disease every start on the legs?

Usually starts in the mouth as ulcers, or just erythema (redness).

The typical presentation is obviously on the hands and feet... rarely it will begin on the buttocks.

It is fully possible that it may start on the legs, but I have not seen it personally or heard of it doing so.  (+ info)

Is hand foot and mouth disease contagious even after the person is on anti biotics?

my psycho druggie sister has her messed up friends over and she had them crowded in the kitchen and i could hear some coughing and she told me the one had hand foot and mouth disease on sunday
----------

This disease is caused by a viral infection so here is no use in taking antibiotics because they are ineffective on virus. If it was a bacterial infection, which it is not, then antibiotics would be useful.  (+ info)

How to relieve the pain from mouth ulcers caused by Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease?

I am in alot of pain with this and would appreciate if anyone has any advice on how to relieve the pain. I've tried chloraseptic spray, but it makes it worse. This is not a typical sore throat.
My kids gave me this. They had it last week, but they didn't get the mouth ulcers. I have been to the doctor and been diagnosed, but its a virus, so there isn't much he (the doc) can give me. He did prescribe a mouthwash called magic mouthwash but it does nothing...sigh..

You could also try using baby teething gel, and keep up the pain killers (paracetamol) .Also keep up your fluids and avoid spicy, & salty foods.

Hope you feel better soon.  (+ info)

What can you tell me about herpangina (hand, foot and mouth disease)?

My 9 month old just got diagnosed with herpangina. The doctor said it has a 5-7 day period before it heals and it can only be helped by pain medicine. Is it contagious and can I take him to day care? Where could he have gotten this from? We have dogs and I am just wondering if they could be carriers? I don't believe he has been around other kids with it.
Any information is appreciated.
----------

Herpangina is a viral infection caused by coxsackie virus. It is most commonly referred to as hand-foot-and-mouth disease because the lesions seen are painful vessicles and erythema (blisters and redness) of the throat and mouth, and a rash on the palms and soles. Children can also have fever and runny nose. Herpangina is contracted from other infected individuals, most commonly at daycare. It is possible to spread the virus and you should keep your child at home until it is resolved. The treatment is limited to reducing pain, ensuring hydration, and allowing the illness to pass.
Coxsackie virus is VERY prevalent in the population in general, but children are far more likely to become sick because adults have been exposed/infected so many times during childhood they have sufficient immunity against it.  (+ info)

Has anyone else had to deal with hand, foot and mouth disease?

My 5 year old brought it home from pre-k and now my 2 year old has it. I have tried to give soft foods and lots of liquids but of course she is refusing everything and constantly in pain. Any suggestions for getting her to eat? Also can this lead to an ear infection or ear pain because now she is complaining of ear pain as well.
----------

Both our sons got it around that age. The 5 year old had it so bad he couldnt eat or drink. Our pharmacist suggested a few things to numb the mouth, like mylanta (double check on this) that milky liquid in a blue bottle. That didnt work, so our doc prescribed lynocaine - also check on this, a pain killer you swab on that dentists use to numb. They also didnt like this, we forced it on them, but a few minutes later thay could eat. It only lasted about a half hour.

We used motrin and tylenol too.

Good luck - this is a miserable one.  (+ info)

I think i have Hand, foot and mouth disease is there anyway I can help it?

I think i have Hand, foot and mouth disease and it's in my mouth on the roof of it, on my hands on my bottom and spreading to around my waist, and on my feet. extremely uncomfortable eating because it feels like I'm swallowing glass. If you know of ANY way to help the process go faster please tell me I have the reception to go to in a week and I don't want to look ugly for it. Thank You and have a wonderful day. :)
----------

DO NOT TRAVEL. Stay home. HFMD is extremely dangerous to cattle and farm animals. It is highly contagious. No treatment. HMFD must be resolved by the immune system. It is a virus. Try crushed ice, Saltines, and ginger-ale. It is a good, soothing home remedy. Not a treatment or cure.  (+ info)

Parents: Where does Hand Foot and Mouth disease come from?

I know it's highly contagious and most likely spread through other kids. But what else causes it?

Any ideas? I tried googling (in the 10 minutes time I had to google) and all I saw was that it's spread through other children.
----------

It's dubbed that because the rash that accompanies it is primarily on the palms of the hands, bottom of the feet and inside the mouth/throat. In extreme cases (like with my own little overachievers) the rash will also extend to arms, legs and tummy. Comes with an awful sore throat and fever. He won't even be able to drink. I'm not aware that anything else causes it other than contact from a carrier/infected person.

Anyone can get it, not just children. But mostly it's children who get it.

Is this what he has? Watch dehydration! A sore throat bad enough to turn away drinks, topped with a fever are big contributors to dehydration.  (+ info)

How long do they not eat or have an apetite when having hand foot and mouth disease?

How long is too long and of concern? I know with HFM they typically have no appetite. But I was under the impression that once the fever broke they should get some appetite back. Well, Sully has been feverless since Sat night, maybe Sun and he is still not eating very much at all. He is drinking a little more but is hardly eating anything. I mean maybe like a few bites the whole day. I don't know if its still from HFM or that he has a whopper of a cold on top of it. But he hasn't really eaten since Thursday. Its almost been a week now and I just think thats too long. But maybe not. What is your thoughts? Thanks so much! oh yeah he's 16m old.
----------

that happened to my mom AND my brother .... give it time because your mouth is in severe pain because of the sores ... it took my family FOREVER to even be able to brush their teeth again ... if it really concerns you that much go to a doctor .. I'm sure its fine though  (+ info)
