I'm taking Quetiapine to help with hallucinations, still waiting for it to work. How will it change things?

Will it reduce the frequency of the hallucinations, or, make them seem less real and therefore less distressing?
I've started on a relatively low dose (150 mg twice a day) I just want to know what will happen. It'll make it easier to hang on until I see some improvements.
Can you help?
----------

300mg isn't that small of a dose, though it's nowhere near the upper limits. In my experience, it will reduce the frequency of the hallucinations as well as making you more clear-headed and able to tell what's real from what's not real. So to answer your question, both will happen. Hang in there, it should start to help within a few days. If you can't see any improvement in a couple of weeks, then you either need to up the dose or switch meds. Good luck :)  (+ info)

Is it possible to have schizophrenia but not have hallucinations?

I have a lot of delusions, and other symptoms of it. But i don't think i have ever had hallucinations. The only reason im asking is because people on here told me i could have it.
----------

It's possible to have schizophrenia without hallucinations. There are different types of schizophrenia; delusional schizophrenia doesn't usually include hallucinations.

That being said, if you suspect schizophrenia or another mental illness, you need to be seeing a psychiatrist, not consulting the internet.  (+ info)

Did you have psychic abilities or hallucinations during pregnancy?

During my pregnancy I heard a voice twice and footsteps once. I am not sure if it was paranormal or hallucinations. I haven't had any mental illness that could case hallucinations before or after my pregnancy. I've never been psychic either. I wanted to know if other women had this issue!
----------

yes, to the psychic abilities, no to the hallucinations. i knew the sex of my baby (told to me in a dream) and i didn't know i was pregnant at that time. throughout my pregnancy, i could predict small things--a flat tire, a family member's pregnancy, a phone call or two... i don't know why, but there were certain events i just knew were going to happen and then they did. i stopped calling it coincidence after about the third time it happened and just chalked it up to having an extra boost of psychic "juice" in my body. my theory is you have to be open to the possibility of this stuff being able to happen--psychic predictions, esp, whatever--in order for it to happen. some people don't believe; i believe in it strongly. perhaps you are the same and that is why you are having these experiences. don't let it freak you out; it's just nature's way sometimes.... good luck with the baby!  (+ info)

Can you have auditory hallucinations with Bipolar 1 Disorder?

Is it possible someone with BPD type 1 can have hallucinations (hearing voices, but they do not give them commands, but they do communicate with them daily)? Or is this some other type of mental disorder with symptoms that mimic BPD?
----------

My son has bipolar I and while he was in a manic episode and walking the street he heard disturbing voices. They didnt tell him to do anything specific but it was later ascertained that his mania got so bad that he crossed over into psychosis.

So to answer your question, the bipolar itself doesnt necessarily cause the auditory hallucinations but when left untreated it can turn into something more severe.

Good luck 2u. Hope this helped.  (+ info)

How do they know my hallucinations aren't real?

I'm on seroquel I guess because they think I suffer from delusions, and hallucinations. How do they know they aren't real?
----------

The point is whether the experiences interfere with your ability to function as a human being who is able to enjoy engaging with the world as most people see it. You could go on and on talking philosophically about experience and how the experience of one person can differ from that of another, and whose experience is "real", but quality of a person's life is important. So if psychiatric services think that your experiences are having a detrimental effect on your quality of life they will prescribe anti-psychotics.
Intelligent informed mental health professionals (and they do exist) are more concerned with enabling you to enjoy your life, rather than obsessing about how "real" things are.
Anti-psychotic medication may help with this. You can then look at your experiences after you have been taking it and whether they help you have a decent quality of life.  (+ info)
