Read these articles they will teach a load of good things about treating Hypothyroidism a condition in which the body lacks sufficient thyroid hormone. Since the main purpose of thyroid hormone is to "run the body's metabolism", it is understandable that people with this condition will have symptoms associated with a slow metabolism.

What is the best remedy of having a toxic goiter? Medication or Operation?

I need help cause my mom has a toxic goiter and I dont want her to undergo in a operation, I dont want her to suffer in pain and I really love my mom.
----------

It depends upon the situation. Is this the same as a thyroid crisis? I had a thyroid crisis after the birth of my first child. My thyroid was very overactive for just a few days. Then it slowed down to normal on its own. Now it is underactive. If it is staying overactive, she may need surgery.  (+ info)

How do i know the difference between lymphoma and goiter?

A goiter is an enlarged thyroid, which is located in the front of your neck just above your clavicle. Sometimes people with a goiter notice difficulty swallowing, increased pressure on the throat when laying on their back, and a raspy voice.

Lymphoma is cancer of the lymphatic system, which is different from the thyroid and does not cause a goiter (but sometimes lymphoma patients end up with a thyroid dysfunction because of radiation).

Seeing a doctor is the best way to determine what you have.  (+ info)

Why do I have a goiter the size of a tennis ball growing in my neck?

yes, I did just give birth. I heard that it could be possiably from child bearing, but it seems hereditary in my family to have hyperactive thyroids. being so my mother and older sister are on medication, without the swollen gland! I do not understand why all of a sudden this would appear. Any logical explanations out there?

I had a similar problem, so I will tell you my story(hope it helps and doesn't bore you to death). This all happened after I had my daughter...I don't know if pregnancy caused it or if it was just coincidental. I first found out about my enlarged thyroid when I was sick. I went to the doctor for being sick, and she told me my thyroid was enlarged and wanted to run tests. I had felt it, but it wasn't that large at the time, so I just thought it was a swollen gland from infection. I had my thyroid levels checked, and they were normal. I went to an endocrinologist and he checked my levels again...normal. At that time, he told me that my only option was to have it removed because he couldn't treat it with medicine if my levels were fine. It wasn't very noticeable then, and I couldn't bare the thought of having my throat cut(he also told me insurance would not cover it because they would consider it 'cosmetic'). Anyway, over the course of the next 2-3 yrs, it gradually grew bigger and bigger. I had my levels checked several more times and they were always normal. I finally went to a new doctor, and she immediately referred me to a surgeon. The first time I saw him, he said it needed to come out. He said the larger it gets, the more chance there is of getting cancer in it. He measured my thyroid and my left nodule was 6cm wide. In January of last year, I had my entire thyroid removed leaving nothing but my parathyroid glands. My thyroid had grown so large that it wrapped around my esophogus and surgery lasted 6 hrs. I now take thyroid replacement hormones daily. If it does not go down, I would highly recommend seeing a specialist. The scar is barely noticeable. They make the incision so that it fits right in with the wrinkles in your neck. I hope this gave you a little insight. By the way, I was never diagnosed with anything other than a simple 'goiter'.  (+ info)

I was diagnosed with a Substernal Goiter, Im supposed to have surgery soon?

I was diagnosed with a Substernal Goiter, Im supposed to have surgery soon within the next couple of days I want to know if surgery is the only option and if I need to remove both my glands since only the left one is enlarged, is there a treatment to avoid my right gland to swell as well? I just dont want to remove a healthy gland for no reason except it will possibly grow in the future
----------

A Sub-sternal goiter is when a thyroid will grow downward rather than up and out within the neck. When this happens, the thyroid will grow down the trachea into the chest. This can become an even bigger problem since the chest is surrounded by a very rigid bone structure (the chest cavity). The top of the chest cavity is made up of the spinal column in the back, the first and second ribs on the sides, and the collar bones (clavicles) and breast bone (sternum) in the front. When a thyroid gets enlarged within this rigid bony structure, it will compress those structures which are soft such as the trachea, lungs, and blood vessels (the bones will not give way). This is what makes sub-sternal thyroids a special case which deserve special attention. I had my thyroid removed 5 years ago and am doing very well on synthroid. If your doctor feels that it is better to remove the entire gland then I would not argue.  (+ info)
