is there a cure for goiter? what foods are good and bad for goiter?

I have nodular goiter for years now, I would sometimes exprience sudden changes in my weight, falling hair, dry skin and always catching my breath whenever i climb the stairs.
----------

yes. 98% of goiter are curable. You're lucky that your goiter is nodular. Unlike Hyperthyroidism which is far worse than nodular because of a lot of complications, nodular goiter can be cured by taking substitute pills for T3 & T4 like Levothyroxin.

Avoid too much stress.

Consult your Endocrinologist, though.

Good luck.  (+ info)

I have a multinodule goiter. Why do I have this and why does it continue to grow?

I have had biospy done, it is benien. My TSH was .5 and my T3 and T4 were in the high end of the normal range. I am a fifth generation woman to have a goiter in my family. I am a 30 years old female. I am trying to figure out why this runs so heavily in my family and by the way my family has a history of autoimmune disease such as R.A. and Reiter's Syndrome (I am the first to have Reiter's syndrome in my family) and so on. I am trying to make since of all of this since my goiter continues to grow. I am having another ultrasound next Tuesday. I live in the US so iodine is not the issue. There has to be a reason even a hidden one because this goiter issue just runs to hard on the family to be just simple gentics-except maybe a certain thyroid or pitutary disease.
----------

From what you wrote, I guess you've already read extensively regarding multinodular goitre (MNG) and other autoimmune diseases.

All i can tell you is this: the more it runs in the family, the more likely that this is due to genetics. Autoimmune diseases have a tendency to occur together (ie. if you have grave's disease, there's a higher likelihood that you'll have other autoimmune problems like reiter's and RA.).

My advice is for you not to search too hard for some other cause of the hereditary MNG. It may be difficult for you to blame it all on genetics, but that's the way it is.

Besides iodine, you should ask your doctor about other alternatives. Many centres in the world will offer a total thyroidectomy for MNGs that continue increasing in size, as there is a possibility that one of the nodules may turn malignant in the future. The downside of surgery is that you'll have to be on thyroid replacement medication for life. On the other hand, radioactive iodine can sometimes make one more prone to cancer, and will also eventually lead to hypothyroidism and need for thyroid replacement.  (+ info)

What would cause me to get Lipomas, a Ganglion and now a goiter on my Thyroid?

Several years ago I started getting Lipomas on my body, then a ganglion on my wrist and now I have found a Goiter on my thyroid. Sonogram on neck shows 4 lumps on one side of neck and 1 lump on other side.
----------

It's obviously some sort of lymp systems problem.

Make sure you are getting enough iodine for that goiter and have your thyroid panel run to check for thyroid disease.

I am thinking Grave's disease or lupus actually. But maybe you are just prone to fluid masses and nothing more.. good luck.  (+ info)

Does having a thyroid goiter affect your weight?

I have always had low energy, even as a child. At one point I was anemic. My maternal grandmother had her thyroid removed. I found out about 3 years ago that I have a multi-nodule goiter. I'm wondering if this would affect why I can't keep weight off? I tried dieting and exercise for months and lost minimal amount of weight. I also never have any energy, even with a full night's rest. Is this all related? Thanks!
----------

Having a goiter can cause a person to gain weight and/or have a hard time taking it off. Was your TSH, free T4 and free T3 checked - what were the levels? Depending on the blood test levels, it may indicate that you are hypothyroid, and you might need to take a levothyroxine pill to bring you back to the normal range.  (+ info)

Can a goiter shrink without surgery?

Can a goiter be reduced in size without surgery? Can you recommend doctors in New York City that specialize in goiters and natural remedies. Any success stories with before/after goiter pictures would be appreciated.
----------

goiters can be reduced in size with treatment. thyroid hormone (levothyroxine) will sometimes allow the enlarged thyroid tissue to return to normal size, because demand is not being made of the tissue to produce endogenous hormone. Look for an endocrinologist or call the local medical society or ask your doctor to recommend someone. many endos require a referral anyway so as not to waste their and your time.  (+ info)
