What are results for using Ensastaurin for recurrent glioblastoma multiforme?

This drug may reduce blood supply to the tumor which will hopefully shrink tumor burden (size).

what is the success rate of surgery for malignant glioblastoma cancer?

pls let me know if you have any info on glioblastoma cancer thanks
----------

Surgery in these cases is considered palliative even with complete surgical resection of the tumor. There is no cure for this cancer. The median survival is about 1 year; untreated it is about 3 months. There are a few reasons for this. For one the tumor cells are very resistant to chemotherapy and other conventional therapies. The brain is susceptible to damage due to therapy and is limited in its capacity to repair itself. And many drugs cannot cross the blood brain barrier. However, about 1 in every 5,000-6,000 survives for decades. You may want to look at UCLA’s website for more information as they do a lot of research in this area.  (+ info)

Has there ever been a case where a Glioblastoma multiforme has been completely removed and not came back?

Yeah...
----------

There are a few cases, yes. If you'd like to read some long term survivor stories from people with GBM's go to this web site.
Read Matthew's story. He's a long term survivor who's lived a great life. He was diagnosed as a teenager. There are several stories. My husband is a long term (over 20 years) survivor of an AAIII. That's the same tumor only at a grade 3.
He was told his tumor would return as a GBM with in 12 to 18 months in 1989 and it never has.
Good luck.  (+ info)

If nobody survives Glioblastoma Multiforme, why do they treat it with radiation and chemo?

Just wondering. Everything I've read says it's terminal. Just want to know the facts. Thanks for any info you can offer.
Thanks for the answers so far. Toots, if you see this and wouldn't mind, would you email me? I have a few questions if you wouldn't mind sharing your knowledge with me. Thank you.
----------

Treatment is not only to prolong life. Chemo and radiation can also be palliative. That means to relieve pain.
A brain tumor can be very painful and can cause visual, hearing, taste, balance, and motor disturbances among others.
Sometimes the treatment will shrink the tumor enough that a person can have a tolerable end-of-life without being drugged into insensibility. If a cancer victim can have a good death, it's worth the trouble and expense.  (+ info)

glioblastoma can anyone help with more information please?

My Mum was diagnosed with a primary brain tumour two months ago(glioblastoma) and on the 16th of April has had 98% of it removed and still in hospital recovering from the Op, she is confused and always agitated, she still has to have Radiation treatment and the hospital say that they can't put her thro radiation till she is more focused and aware. Has anyone had any or know of someone who had similar condition? and how long will this confusion last for?
----------

It depends on where the tumor is located. It could also be from the swelling. Are they giving her decadron for swelling? GBM is a difficult tumor to treat. Give her prayers from me.
Chandler, A GBM is ALWAYS grade 4.

I've got this website bookmarked in case I ever need them. Both are in CA.

Has anyone ever heard of anybody using DCA for Glioblastoma?? If so, what kind of results did they have?

Has anyone ever heard of anybody using DCA for brain cancer, glioblastoma? If so, what kind of results did they have?
We are in 2009, what are the latest news of DCA?
Regards
----------

There is a Canadian clinic that is treating patients off label for cancer . . however DCA isn't the immediate 'cure' everyone had hoped and patients have died. Perhaps the most alarming was the first patient who took DCA using a clinical trial died suddenly. However, clinical trials continue with this treatment . . you can located a trial at ClinicalTrials.gov:

The Safety and Efficacy of DCA for the Treatment of Brain Cancer
http://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT00540176

There are some serious medical issues that can occur using DCA inappropriately .. and one is that safe dosages have not been established . . and no one is certain which or of what benefit DCA may or may not have for the over 200 different types of cancer.

Study of DCA as a treatment for some cancer types continues.  (+ info)

what causes a brain tumor - glioblastoma, can it be hereditary?

can a bricklayer get it from the using a lot of cement?

i know of a bricklayer who died of this apparantly he knew 2 other bricklayers diagnosed with this
----------

The answer is yes to both. They are genetic mutations that can be inherited, or acquired by exposure to chemicals. But it is not definitive, can also be household chemicals that lead to the acquired mutations. Most brain cancer is not genetic. Check out the link below.  (+ info)

Cytomegalovirus and glioblastoma link? Is there more research being done?

Thanks, April, but i am referring to this, "More than 80 percent of patients newly diagnosed with the brain cancer glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) exhibit detectable CMV in their blood as well as in their tumors..."
----------

Glioblastoma, there's ongoing research and many clinical trials for this almost ALWAYS fatal brain cancer. Cytomegalovirus, on the other hand, is a very common infection of the eye, also is a member of the herpes family.
Hmmm, a virus that's carried by about 80% of people worldwide. Now, if you're on chemo for gbm, you are more suseptible to the virus. It does NOT cause gbm.

From the same site you found that quote on: the fact that a vaccine based on CMV seems to have some effect on GBM, means the relationship has to be more than fortuitous:

There were 21 patients enrolled in the trial, and the vaccine appears to have delayed the re-growth of tumors from a typical six to seven months after surgery to more than 12 months. Early results also show a lengthened overall survival among GBM patients, from about 14 months with standard treatment to greater than 20 months.

What causes a "Glioblastoma? Is it something that runs in families?

My sisteer has a stage four "glio", it is fatal. She maintains that it was caused by usuage of cell phones. My familiy's history of cancer is strong for colon cancer, so, I am wondering if rather than attack the colon the gene went to her brain?
Thanks,

The SV40 virus has been implicated in the Glioblastoma multiforme Grade III type of brain malignancy. Many of the early 'Salk' polio vaccines were allegedly contaminated with this virus when the vaccine components were prepared using the harvested kidneys of monkeys as a culture medium. Some of the kidneys were believed to have been infected. Need I say more?  (+ info)

My Mom has had Glioblastoma Multiforme for 4 months. Can anyone tell me what to expect?

My husband died from a Glioblastoma brain tumour 10 yrs ago. When he was diagnosed mid January, he was told he wouldn't see Valentines Day but he lived for 22 months.
His was located in the speech control centre in the parietal lobe so they could not operate. We went through 6 weeks of radiation 5 x/week and then did 6 rounds of Chemotherapy. He had MRI's done every 6 weeks.
He was put on Dexamethazone which is a steroid to reduce swelling and inflammation around the tumour. This medication can also raise blood sugar levels and make the person diabetic.
When Glioblastomas are in an active growth period they can double their size in 10 days. They are unlike other types of tumors in that they are not encapsulated but grow like a cobweb throughout the brain.
He had petit mal seizures so was also put on seizure medication.
His tumour was on the left side of his brain so it affected his speech and the right side of his body......almost like a stroke victim.
He never had any pain but did say that sometimes he felt a tightness......like wearing a baseball cap that was too tight.
Other than some physical disabilities that developed during the course of his illness, he remained healthy and well.
Unfortunately, with this type of tumour, there is no cure and death is inevitable. It will not spread to other parts of the body..........it starts in the brain and ends in the brain.
Depending where the tumour is located, as it progresses you could see personality changes.......anger and aggression is quite common....please remember that this is part of the disease process.....don't take things they might say or do personally (although it can be very difficult and challenging at times)
On the Friday of the weekend he died.......he went for a 2 mile walk in the morning, swam in the pool in the afternoon (had to wear a lifejacket in case he seizured in the water), had a big dinner and went to bed. During the night he slipped into a coma and he died Sunday afternoon. It was peaceful and pain free and for that I'm very thankful. I was able to keep him at home until he died which was a real blessing for him and our entire family.

If you would like to keep my details, I'm more than happy to chat with you if you have questions, concerns or just need someone to talk to.

I've always said if you have to have a terminal illness that this is the one to have....it doesn't ravage your body like some cancers do.

Just keep loving her and treasure every day you have with her.  (+ info)
