Is it a problem to have one smoke after being diagnosed with gingivitis?

I only smoke once or twice a year on holidays and the 4th of July is one of them. However, I was at the dentist yesterday and they said that I have some gingivitis. They gave me a chlorohexadine mouthwash and told me to come back in two weeks. I was wondering if anyone could give me a professional opinion on whether having one smoke (cigar or cigarette) tomorrow would be a problem. Thanks!

It will be fine to have a smoke every now and then,,,,smoking icreases your risk for gum diseases but having one occasionally won't hurt. Just make sure you brush well the next day and rinse with your mouthwash the next day.  (+ info)

How to prevent cavities, gingivitis and periodontal disease besides brushing?

are there any other ways to prevent cavities, gingivitis and periodontal disease *besides* brushing at least twice a day, regularly flossing, regular dental cleanings/check ups, using mouth wash(my dentist recommends ACT which I use), scraping the tongue, avoiding sugary foods? Does sugar-free gum help? What about hydrogen peroxide?

Try to limit snacking between meals, this includes drinking anything that contains calories. Every time you eat the bacteria in your mouth eat also, there by-product is acid. after you stop eating (assuming no pieces of food are stuck in your teeth) your mouth is acidic for 15 min taking minerals out of your teeth. Your saliva takes a little over 1.5 hours to replace these minerals. I would try to stick to an every 2 hour eating/snacking schedule and just plain water between meals.  (+ info)

How to get rid of Gingivitis in a week?

I never had problems with my gums before I got braces, Now I have gingivitis that won't go away. I brush and use mouth wash a lot but it won't go away. I have a party coming up and want my teeth to look great, what do I do? Please help me!
----------

Go to your dentist there is a prescription mouthwash that will take care of it. Until that time brush and floss using mouthwash. Also, Colgate tooth paste I once heard has the best Gingivitis formula. Just make sure you get the Gingivitis formula. Also, very important, get all refined foods out of your diet and stick with just vegetables, nuts, whole grains, olive oil and non-refined fruits. Get plenty of calcium in your diet and if you smoke quit!

How to get rid of gingivitis naturally? or how is it called when your gums are all dark?

I used to be a smoker and my gums are all dark and i want to find a home remedy to clean that up. I brush my teeth and then listerine them. My gums don't bleed but somebody told me it could be gingivitis but i really don't know what it is and what to do using a natural method
----------

Pigmentation of the gums (dark color seen at the gingiva) is generally physiological (normal) depending on the person's race. African Americans present more pigmentation, thus gums may have a darker color, especially in some areas. This is generally seen symmetrically (present both in right and left sites).

Sometimes, darker color may happen due to a foreign body. It generally occurs due to amalgam restoration materials staying around following tooth extraction, etc. [It looks like a tattoo.]

And sometimes, they may be related to a local pathology affecting melanin-releasing cells [very similar to what we experience on skin].

Can gingivitis cause your glands under your chin to swell?

I don't know if I have gingivitis but I'm 31 weeks pregnant and I seem to have all the symtoms. I also have this lump under my chin that is swollen and around it on the sides of my throat. It started out not so painful but now it's very painful. It hurts to look up and it hurts when I swallow. Does anyone know what this could be?

How long will it take for my gingivitis to go away?

I have had braces for 4 years, and am getting them off tomorrow. I have gingivitis in certain spots, and was wondering, if it will go down by itself after my braces come off, and what i have to do to quicken the process?
----------

Gingivitis is a bacterial infection of gums “the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth”. This bacterial infection leads to in an inflammation of the tissues and supporting structures or the teeth. Gingivitis remains undetected in the early stages of life.
Gingivitis is a severe problem and takes longer period of time to eradicate. Gingivitis in advance may lead to periodontal (gum) disease and it can progress to such a level where tooth loss may occur as a result of the severe weakening gums. It is also estimated that 90% of all adults are somewhat affected by it, but in most of the cases damage caused by gingivitis is reversible.

my toddler is only 16 months old, the pedia said she has gingivitis. How to treat this?

6 teeth are about to grow, and her gums are swollen, the pedia said that my 16 month toddler has gingivitis? Is this possible at a very young age? How to avoid this? She loves to play the pacifier in her mouth.
----------

My son about that age had gingivitis because of the pacifier. When I wanted to break him from the bottle I thought the pacifier would be the lesser of two evils (since I didn't think the pacifier would rot his teeth). He never took the pacifier till I broke him from the bottle. When I took him to the doctor after him waking up with blood around his mouth 2 mornings in a row she told me to take him to the denist. They had me take gauze and push it against his gums to force the blood and infection out and put him on an antibiotic. As far as avoiding this I had to take all of his pacifiers away which he was ok with cause he understood that it was what was causing the pain! Good luck!  (+ info)
