How do I make my Giardia infected dog gain weight?

My dog has been diagnosed with Giardiasis but has already been treated for it. They say Giardia lives with a dog forever and I believe that's the reason he's not gaining weight. How do I get him to gain weight even though he's not having an outbreak? Keep in mind he's also got Celiac's disease- so no grains/wheats.
----------

feed the dog several small meals a day.
there are special foods available:no grains!
you can cook for him too:quinoa is gluten free!
use pancreatic enzymes to help him absorb more nutrients:these enzymes are sold in health stores for people.
sold under:digestive enzymes  (+ info)

Experts on Giardiasis?

I'm doing a school project on the disease Giardiasis.
The internet doesn't offer a lot of information on it,
so I was hoping someone would know a lot about it
on Yahoo!
1.) Location most affected
2.) How does it reproduce?
3.) How does it infect people?

Thanks!

Hello I have a question about the parasite called Giardiasis PLEASE help.?

Is it possible to have an infection of Giardiasis and the docter not no? I even had a stool sample done and it came up negative for giardiasis. I have read on the internet that you can have Giardiasis and have a negative stool sample and you can feel them. I am not sure if this is true or not and I was wondering if anyone eles new. PLEASE help my stomach problems have been going on way to long about 5 months. I am 27 year old female and pretty much healthy before all this began. It started while I was visiting the states. I am starting nursing school soon and am worried that I will not even be able to go.

Giardiasis is a diarrhea disease when infected this parasite lives in the intestine and is passed in the stools. This is protected by a outer shell it can survive for a long time you can become infected by swallowing such a parasite. You may have diarrhea, gas, stools that float, cramps (stomach) nausea or then again none of this at all. This all starts around 7 days after being infected.this could of been missed in 1 st sample you need to do another test and maybe another to be sure.Drink clear fluids eat light like soups or light foods. If get treatment for this you will be fine to go to your school/schools . You really need meds to kill bugs and to feel better the meds for this is Metronidazole or Tinidazole. After this you will be fine to go to school just be careful what you eat or drink. Good Luck with both.  (+ info)

Will a vet's lab notice the difference between human and cat poop?

I am trying to get tested for Giardiasis (Giardia) as my symptoms match exactly but my local hospital said Giardia was unlikely because I haven't travelled much recently and gave me salt and painkiller after a 3 hour wait. Called 14 local GP's but they all require registration which takes up to a week and they won't necessarily agree to do the test anyway. My vet will test my cat stool sample on demand. If I add a second human sample for the vet to test....will the vet's lab know the difference?
In the UK so its government tab...if i was in the US it would have been fixed by now.
----------

I would say yes. Try having the test done privately, or go back and demand one if you are still having problems.  (+ info)

Human Giardiasis! Plz help!?

i wanna know about this disease. is it dangerous? thanx !!!
----------

Human giardiasis may involve diarrhea within 1 week of ingestion of the cyst, which is the environmental survival form and infective stage of the organism.

Normally illness lasts for 1 to 2 weeks, but there are cases of chronic infections lasting months to years. Chronic cases, both those with defined immune deficiencies and those without, are difficult to treat.

Giardia lamblia is frequently diagnosed by visualizing the organism, either the trophozoite (active reproducing form) or the cyst (the resting stage that is resistant to adverse environmental conditions) in stained preparations or unstained wet mounts with the aid of a microscope. A commercial fluorescent antibody kit is available to stain the organism. Organisms may be concentrated by sedimentation or flotation; however, these procedures reduce the number of recognizable organisms in the sample. An enzyme linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) that detects excretory secretory products of the organism is also available. So far, the increased sensitivity of indirect serological detection has not been consistently demonstrated.  (+ info)

GIARDIASIS, I think I have it. Please answer this question.?

I started riding horses about a year and half ago. I've had diarrhea for about the same amount of time. It comes and goes every week or two. No blood. Lots of gas everyday. HORRIBLE smelling too. I've noticed hundreds of tiny white dots in the stool, sort of like grits, but smaller. Nothing moving in the stool. I checked. I gave a stool sample to my doctor and asked her to check for Giardasis, but she practically laughed at me. Does anyone know what these little white bits could be? Is it normal or possibly a sign of chronic Giardia?
Note: Giardiasis is spreadable from horses to humans. I do not have a good hand washing regimen. I bite my nails. And lately I've noticed there is a similarity in the smell of the stool compared to the horses I deal with everyday.

Possible giardiasis or another round of stomach flu?

A little less than two weeks ago I was stuck with what I'm assuming was some sort of stomach bug (normal colored diarrhea, fever, chills, nausea) . All is well until suddenly I start having yellow stool with a lot of gas/bloating and similar symptoms from the previous incident. Up until now, every thing digestive-wise was perfectly normal. I am unsure if what I am experiencing now is connected with the stomach bug. What makes me assume that it isn't the same is the sudden color change and upon further reading I found that there is a period of time (up to 30 days I believe) in which giardia need time to hatch, flourish and infect.

My diet is relatively healthy (I don't drink or have junk food) with the exception that I probably don't eat as much as I should and there have been no recent changes. I probably should mention that in the last week that I've been sneaking in grapes from the fridge without washing them first. (I know, bad move) I am not on any antibiotics or medications.

Please no solely "Go to the doctor!" answers. I do not have insurance, it's pretty embarrassing and I don't want to give any poo samples unless I really have to.

this is a sick feces question. dont look if you are feces sensitive?

hi, i was wondering if i have giardiasis which is an infection. recently, ive been not "properly" going to the #2 like i usually did for the past 10+ years. when i use #2 now, all i get is gas like bubbles on the top of the water in the toilet. also, when i use #2, the feces arent solid, its like a liquid. somewhat the liquid looks like urine.
----------

Sounds like it. Or possibly clostridium difficile. Yuck. Either way, you need to see a doctor asap. And wash your hands about fifty times after you use the toilet, as it is highly contagious.  (+ info)

Giardia Lamblia poisoning (Sulphur belching)?

With Giardia Lamlbia Poisoning (Giardiasis), what causes the foul sulphur-tasting belches that the parasite infection seems to give off? Is it actually sulphur or some kind of gas given off by the parasite? No matter how much I try, I cannot seem to burp it all up whenever I get Giardia (which is common where I live thanks to our recycled sewage drinking supply).
----------

What are the symptoms of Giardiasis?

Giardia infection can cause a variety of intestinal symptoms, which include

Diarrhea
Gas or flatulence
Greasy stools that tend to float
Stomach cramps
Upset stomach or nausea.

These symptoms may lead to weight loss and dehydration. Some people with Giardiasis have no symptoms at all.

It would appear that the foul belching is caused by the flagellated protozoan in the stomach and intestines. Good luck.
