What and how bad is Gastroparesis?

I have recently been diagnosed with gastroparesis , do you have it ? What is it? How bad is it? What does it mean is going to happen to me? Please answer honestly I really need the facts. Thank you in advance for your help ! :)

Hi. Gastroparesis basically just means that the stomach is slower to empty than normal. Nobody really knows the cause - sometimes it's associated with diabetes, but sometimes it just develops (as it did in my case). It can be anywhere from very mild - where you feel a bit uncomfortable after eating, to very severe - where you can't eat at all.

I've had it for about 2 1/2 years now and mine is towards the very severe end of the scale - one of the worst my specialist has ever seen. I have been hospitalised as a result because I can't eat any solid foods at all - I can only eat things like soups, pureed fruit and porridge, and even then only in tiny amounts (3-4 teaspoons of something at one time would be a huge serve for me). I did have a nasojejunal (a tube from my nose to my intestine) feeding tube in for about seven months but I hated it, and although my specialist would now like me to have an implanted tube I'm incredibly reluctant to have any more surgical procedures, no matter how minor.

Has your doctor suggested any treatment for you, or are you coping okay with dietary management? There are medications if people need them (and other things - botox, feeding tubes, gastric pacing), but a lot of people with gastroparesis cope very well just by changing the foods they eat and their eating patterns. Stick to soft, easily digestible foods that are low in fat - soups, cooked fruit and vegetables, pasta, rice, lean meats, etc. - and eat very small frequent meals (aim for 6-8 small meals per day rather than 3 larger ones). There are also some good supplements on the market if you find that you're having trouble maintaining weight.

I hope that helps - feel free to contact me if you've got any questions.  (+ info)

What type of foods can be eaten with gastroparesis?

Gastroparesis, or delayed gastric emptying, is a condition that can be brought on by a number of causes, but most commonly is associated with diabetes.

For diabetes-related gastroparesis, maintenance of blood glucose levels should be the target of the diet.

But in general, for any form of gastroparesis, here a a few guidelines to keep in mind. You should limit your intake of high-fat foods because fat slows digestion, and you should limit your intake of high-fiber foods because fiber is just plain difficult to digest. You should also consider eating six small meals per day as opposed to two or three larger meals.

Bottom line about these recommendations: any treatment of gastroparesis should be targeted at keeping food moving through the stomach, and not allowing the stomach to become overly full. Complications can arise when the stomach does not empty in a timely fashion. And if the gastroparesis is diabetes-induced, be sure to keep maintenance of stable blood glucose levels a top priority.  (+ info)

does anyone know any information about gastroparesis in a child thats not diabetic? anythi ng about this would?

im so depressed to see her like this with the weight loss i don't want her to die, i hope this med helps her its called a long name antibiotics that Support to speed up her stomach and shes not diabetes. anyone know anything?
----------

Hi sexy,

Another term for gastroparesis is delayed gastric emptying. Food takes longer to move out of the stomach into the small intestine.

It is treatable and there are several different ways to treat it. You say currently she is on antibiotics which I suspect is Erythromycin. This will be given a chance to work and then something else will be tried. There is no indication that she will not survive this.

She should also be on an anti emetic (to help prevent vomiting) and should be on a Low fibre diet.

I hope this helps you. I know it is hard to watch someone you love suffering, but once the correct treatment for her has been established she will be much better. It is just trial and error at first unfortunately.

I hope she improves very soon.

Pertentage of population with Gastroparesis?

What is the percentage of the population with idiopathic, or Post Viral Gastroparesis?
----------

According to my calculations, less than one tenth of 1 percent.... .021 percent, to be more precise. Among diabetics, it's more like 30 to 50 percent. (Hint: healthy diet comprised of mostly fresh fruits and vegetables, tight glucose control, and daily exercise will cure it).  (+ info)
