Looking for help with stress fractures?

I am 22 years old and I have been in the army for about 5 years. After a recent deployment I developed stress fractures in both shins and knee caps. I was told by the medics and Physicians Assistant that about 4 to 6 months of rest would solve the problem. I have stopped running and doing any training for about 5 months now and they have actually gotten worse.

Is it possible that the fractures will never go away? Is there anything that would help me speed up the healing?
----------

You should see a Sport Medicine Doctor. They can better suggest ways to heal it. Rest i s the general way to treat it. There is electric therapy.

You can soak the area in hot water (like a hot tub) several times a day. Slow stretch those joints before an walks or runs. Do the stretches even after they heal up (to prevent them from coming back).  (+ info)

Can shin splints cause stress fractures?

If so how can you tell the difference?
----------

Yes they can.

The only way to tell is through a bone scan or MRI.  (+ info)

is it possible that stress fractures in the shins can create weak legs abnormal gait and achilles tendinitis?

stress fractures that occured a year ago
or can just the fact that i have flat feet and over pronate be the cause of the stress fractures haha
----------

Your flat feet are what cause the shin splints, "weak legs", abnormal gait and the tendonitis. If you'd like help correcting your feet (for free and pain-free), contact me: [email protected]  (+ info)

how long to stress fractures take to heal?

i had three stress fractures in my shins all next to eachother in the spring of 2007. i stopped running all summer, but then began again in the fall of 2007 they always bothered me but never as bad as they were when i first had them (i couldn't even walk!)
its been over a year and they still kill me!!!! what should i do, do you think they came back?
joe, dont ask what a stress fracture is when you are "answering" the quesiton.
----------

My best friend for life has a stress fracture and she can't do much for 10-12 weeks. Sorry if it has already been 10-12 weeks. Were you doing any PE or exercise during the time you had a stress fracture? If so, you should really see a doctor.  (+ info)

are shin splints and stress fractures connected?

does one cause the other, or what?
i know what they are...i've had both of them....but can one lead to another?
----------

No, shin splints are usually caused by walking or running on haed sufaces like concrete or pavement. Fractures are caused by an accident or stress on a bone. It is a break. Splints are not a break.  (+ info)

What are ALL the symptoms of stress fractures?

I might have them and I want to know if I have all the symptoms...or most.
----------

Stress fractures are often 'overuse' injuries and occur from repetative loading. They often occur in the tibia and foot from activities like jogging/running. It is a very common injury in runners. If you suspect you have a stress fracture you should see a board certified orthopedic surgeon who specializing in orthopedic trauma. Plain radiographs will be needed and possibly CT/MRI. If you have a stress fracture you should stop the activity which may have caused it (running, etc.).

There is some great information on the Wheeless site: http://www.wheelessonline.com/ortho/stress_fractures

Is it OK to walk on foot stress fractures when they don't hurt?

I have a stress fractuce on my left foot right now and I want to know if it's OK to walk to school on it. My school is around a mile away and it usually takes me 20 minutes to walk there.
----------

i wouldn't walk on it (especially that far)

a stress fracture is caused by too much pressure being applied to that bone. if you continue to walk on it before it's healed-you'll be applying more pressure to it-which could cause the fracture to get worse or not heal properly

my advise is that you see if your parents can drive you to school or if someone else can. if not-you have a legitimate medical excuse for being out of school until the fracture heals. just get a doctor's note to cover your missed days.  (+ info)

what vitamins prevent stress fractures?

I started doing Karate 5 weeks ago and I think I have a stress fracture in my forearm from elbow punch drills. The doctor said that an xray might not show a stress fracture if there is one, but it should heal in 6-8 weeks IF i stop doing karate. That's a long time to stop practicing especially since I just started! How do I make sure this doesn't happen again? I'm a girl by the way if that matters.

stress fractures in the army can you help?

i have gotten stress fractures for the second time now and have shin splints and am on crutchs i cant walk obvioulsy (i tried) i am in intense pain daily and i personally feel that a release from the army would be better then me staying in any ideas?
----------

During basic I had stress fractures in my hip. In AIT, I had them in my shins. The pain in my hip was the worst pain I have experienced in my life. They put me on crutches, and I lied saying it didn't hurt to get rid of the crutches three days after I was put on them b/c I didn't want to be on profile OR on crutches. I completed both phases of training and graduated with everyone else. I doubt you will be discharged for stress fractures though. You should just start taking calcium supplements.

My hip still hurts me every once and a while. But trust me, you're going to have something more major wrong with you than that to get out of the army for medical reasons.

I returned from Iraq last month. I have a condition where I pass out for no reason. I have passed out since I was six years old. In the army I have passed out in hot weather, cold weather, standing in formation, and just standing around talking to friends. I once passed out from hitting my funny bone- random triggers.

It is documented on all my medical records, sick call, etc. They even sent me to a cardiologist in Iraq and found nothing wrong with me. My 1SG just told me that I couldn't be a 50 Cal gunner anymore b/c he didn't want me to pass out on a hot weapon. After I saw the cardiologist in Iraq, paperwork was found that stated I was non-deployable because of my episodes, but it had been overlooked.

When I returned to the states, the physician literally laughed at my medical records, told me she didn't have a clue how I got into the army with my medical condition, how I was even in the army after have so many documented episodes, and she couldn't believe I was deployed. And then guess what she said as she signed off on my medical evaluation... "Well, you've made it this far."

So... from my experiences with the army- you're not getting out because of stress fractures. They will heal. After 3 or 4 weeks my shins were better. It took almost 3 months after I graduated AIT for my hip to heal (I went through a 20 week OSUT and had stress fractures by the 6th week of training)

So that's almost 6 months... So I definitely feel your pain.  (+ info)
