What is this pain in my left flank, just above my hip?

I'm looking for an answer from someone who is well versed in medical diagnoses or someone who has had the *exact* same symptoms.

I've seen answers to a question similar to mine that suggest gall stones. I don't have a gall bladder and furthermore the gall bladder is in the right upper quad, not in the left flank.

Three days ago, I was playing a light game of badminton. Later that evening I started receiving a throbbing pain in my left flank, just above my hip. I wrote it off as a light muscle pain. One the following day, my symptoms were more pronounced. They gradually increased, and the throbbing pain became highly unbearable while straining for defecation, cough or sneeze. The pain radiated into my central lower abdomen, and occasionally my right flank will have a stabbing pain. Since yesterday evening, all over the lower abdomen from front to back, side to side, I am receiving throbbing to stabbing pains. My kidneys ache as though I am about to start my period. However, I have no other signs that I am about to menstruate.

Medical History: Hypoglycemia, IBS, Gall Stones (fixed), irregular periods, anemia.

Ibuprofen seems to take the pain away. I took four tablets yesterday (probably 800mg!) and felt no pain at all. I was able to eat without fear I might become nauseous. I have not felt nauseous at any point because of the pain. My urine is clear yet I have been urinating more frequently. There are times when I feel I might not make it to the bathroom. There is an uncomfortable sensation when I urinate, not much unlike the feeling of a UTI, but it is very mild. I have had that feeling for 2 says prior to the throbbing left flank.

I'm overweight so I can't exactly feel any kind of mass in my lower abdomen. I have lost a significant amount of sleep and I am now experiencing a mild headache.

All pain has stayed within my lower abdomen; primarily in my left flank and central lower abdomen just underneath my navel. Occasionally I will feel a pain in my right flank. My lower back also throbs for extended periods of time. No nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or dehydration. Just pain and a little more than normal need to urinate with the weird UTI feeling (but not every time I pee, just most of the time). Please help! Please feel free to ask for more details.

It could be anything, nerve problem, muscle problem, kidneys or a number of other things...It is impossible to answer your question without knowing what the actual problem is. Ask your Doctor for a referral for a CT or MRI scan.
The wrong type of treatment or exercises can do more damage than good and you need to have your back properly diagnosed prior to ANY treatment.
Again you do need to have a CT / MRI scan or such done before allowing ANYONE to touch your back.

Get a professional opinion from the radiologist doing the scan in his report to your doctor and then go from there.  (+ info)

Flank pain! cant figure it out... help please?

I have been having side pain by my lower right rib. The pain is like a sharp bulging pain. It feels like its undermy rib. Also the doctor felt a loose piece of cartilage by my lower right rib. I already got an x ray and a cat scan with contrast. So it not kidney stones are any sort of liver problem or any other organ problem. I also got blood testes and everything is normal with that. So now I am just wondering what else could it be?
----------

Most likely this is related to that loose piece of cartilage. Even mild bruises to the ribs can be very painful...and we get to be reminded of them when we cough, sneeze or laugh.  (+ info)

I have the same pain location and cough as melody82 and i have a large bruise on my mid left side(flank). Help?

You haven't really given enough information for us to offer a good suggestion, but you should probably check with a doctor.  (+ info)

mild flank pain.. not a kidney infection?

hi ive been having extremely mild flank pain around the kidney area.. the pain is widespread around my flank.. more of a discomfort.. very mild and has not progressed in 3 weeks. ive been back to my gp for a follow up from anxiety 5 weeks ago. today he did a urine test in his office and its perfectly fine.. i had a small UTI in february i was almost sure it had just come back but it hasnt. can this flank pain be due maybe to my recent anxiety.. or is there another disorder that can cause it? since my urine is perfect, the doc said theres definitely nothing wrong with my urinary system.. anyone have some insight?? thanks
oh and the pain does not feel very deep.. its like its in the muscles or something. but doesnt worsen with activity..pain is not there in the morning.. takes a few hours to come on.. no other symptoms my sleep patterns are all over the place too lately only because college ended for summer
----------

I'd say not a kidney infection. They come with severe pain a high fever, and bacteria, white blood cells, and possibly blood in your urine.

Other things that can cause flank pain, kidney stones, the very beginning of appendicities or gall bladder disease, or a bowel problem.
In other words a lot of organs.

HOWEVER, if it feels superficial, it probably is, most likely muscle pain. It could be brought on by tension.

If you get a high fever, your pain changes in intensity and or location, you urine is cloudy, or you start having frequent diarrhea with or without blood, see your doctor right away.  (+ info)

It sounds like something else could be going on such as something called kidney stones (an example only).

However, I would recommend getting another opinion, preferably from someone that does not share the same office of the doctor that you go to for care to see what they think could be going on.  (+ info)

Right flank pain (fp) 3yrs Left (fp) 3 weeks?

Right flank pain almost 3 years?
I have a high pain tolerance( 2 babies delivered without pain medicine, worked with a 7mm stone 6 months before surgery removal, worked with a 14mm stone for a year before it blocked my kidney flow had stint put in for swelling to go down before Urologist could do surgery to remove stone). I had a 5mm stone removed from my kidney because of my history of growing stones that will not pass on their own. I am now stone free, but the pain in my right flank is still there (moderate to severe depending on the day) and has never went away, I am convinced it will stay until the cause is found. Recently my left side has started to hurt also. My doctor's (after many tests and referrals for the common causes have all came back negative) concur that it is not my kidney, and can not find a reason. I am convinced it is damage left from stones (kidneys, ureter) that does not explain the left. My doctors either do not believe me or think it is imaginary. I have never had a health problem before my first stone. Desperately seeking solutions
has anyone else had this problem and gotten a resolution. I am currently getting all my records sent to me and I am going to try a new doctor. It is destructive to my ability to function normally.

Could be related to a different kind of stone (an example only).

This could also be related to something with your liver (another example only).

I would recommend a consultation with a liver specialist as well to see what they say (part of the liver is on the left side, the part they call the left lobe) if you haven't already to see what they say.

Another thing that could be causing some of this is a possible issue with the spleen (yet another example only).  (+ info)

Right Flank Pain?

Hi everyone, I have been experienced for the last two weeks a right flank pain, and I dont know what it is, 4 months ago my urinalysis came back with hematuria, blood in the urine, my doctor make me a renal sonogram but there was no problem, he order other urinalysis and there was hematuria, but less than last time, I have been experienced the last two weeks this pain on the right flank, and I dont Know what it is? The doctor told me that he doesnt want to do other tests, he says that it can be a urinary infection, and he prescribed me Cipro for 3 days, that was like a week ago, but the pain doesnt go, Im really tired to go visit that doctors, I have 20 years and Im female, I have my appendix out (surgery) thanks everyone and sorry for my english, Im learning english
----------

First off...if with flank pain you mean right lower abdomen you can rule out appendicitis because you had it removed, still it could be an infection (make sure cultures were taken and the bacteria responsible is sensitive to cipro, otherwise it will not be killed), ovarian cyst or colitis as common entities there are other causes too. If you refer to right upper abdomen/back it could be your gallbladder (gallstones), kidney stones, and again...the same infection resistant to cipro. Hence if your symptoms persist you should see your doctor again and perform further studies (CT abdomen/pelvis, abdominal / pelvic ultrasound. Hope you get well.  (+ info)

pain in flank area on both sides, predominantly on right side?

hey, ive been sick with something (the doctors dont know what yet) for 3 months. the one thing i have now that just hasnt gone away is constantly dull sore pain in my flank area on my back. its like a radiating pain, on both sides, but a little more on the right. its painful no matter what i do. when i stand, when i lay down, when i sit...all the time. i got a blood test for my kidneys, but that was about 2 and a half months ago. ididnt have this pain then, but now i do. my results then came back fine. do you think my kindeys could get messed up that quickly??? the doctors were leaning towards some sort of infection. but geez this is the weirdest pain ive ever had. definatly a sore, deep, radiating pain that covers a pretty big part of my lower sides. its completely different than pulling a muscle. it feels weird.
yea, i agree with you guys. i told my doctor that and they didnt want to give me another test because they thought i was being paranoid. im going to demand for another test.
no. i didnt see alot of doctors. i only saw two. and lol, i didnt even use like, medical term. you mean flank? thats a medical term? lol. since when? and you dont know all my symptoms. soooo stfu for jumping to conclusions about me being a hypercondriac. you dont know half the crap im going through.

You should keep in constant contact with your doctor to ensure that nothing severe is going on.  (+ info)

Unexplained right flank pain?

Right flank pain 3 years?
I have a high pain tolerance( 2 babies delivered without pain medicine, worked with a 7mm stone 6 months before surgery removal, worked with a 14mm stone for a year before it blocked my kidney flow had stint put in for swelling to go down before Urologist could do surgery to remove stone). Yes, this could be some damage as a result of the stones that you had. Another possibility is that there could be a problem with the adrenal glands.

I would recommend a consultation with a kidney specialist called a nephrologist. They can best tell you whether it's for sure kidney related or related to the adrenal glands or some other problem.  (+ info)

pain in left flank and now blood in urine?

Like i said about in my last question, i have to go for a cystoscopy because they have found blood in my urine, which i suspected already cos it looked like there was, and it can't be from periods cos of coil and no periods, so a bit worrying... BUT... i have had long standing pain in my left flank, especially at night and i have to go to the loo to pass water which eases it a bit.. but not altogether , it is extremely painful... docs have done IVU.. fine..done tests like endoscopy, colonoscopy, i don't think its bowel related, but theyve said they thought it might be cos of where pain is, now i have very strong pain killers which help a lot, and treatment for bad constipation, which was what theyve come up with as a probable cause for my pain. BUT i don't think it is, i have feeling its kidney related cos of the passing of urine helping releive the preasure of the pain when its at its worst. .. now a urine test, as part of few basic test that were done, its shown blood in urine, ...
i am not sure how to best get this sorted.. it doesnt seem like a good plan to me to just be on pain killers... what should i do, ask doc what? .. anyone been through similar and able to offer help and or advice?? thanks guysxx
----------

considering you have had the tests already, i would suggest you start drinking lots of water 2-3litres a day and cut out irritants like coffee or at least cut down.

Lots of people can have blood show up in tests in their urine (leaky kidneys) without it being a major health issue. the real test would be on how you function. if your able to "run" i would think the constipation diagnoses is correct.  (+ info)
