What is the best thing to do for a jammed pinky finger?

My son jammed his pinky finger, and it is causing him some pain. We iced it and gave him some Advil, and that helped. But, he has four baseball games this week, and would like to be able to play. Do you think this injury will hurt his game? He is a great player, one of the best on his team, and is worried that he will not be able to play up to his potential this week. Do you have any good ideas to speed up the healing process?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

"RICE" is a very effective therapy. I've used it many times with great success in minimizing the amount of time to heal.

R=Rest (Don't use the finger)

I=Ice (Cold ice for 20-30m (as tolerated) every 2-4 hours)

C=Compression (wrap the finger in a compressive sock or bandage; but make sure not to wrap it too tightly and cut all circulation. You can check this by pressing on the nail bed and pushing the blood out, then release and watch to see how long it takes to return. If capillary refill is 2 or 3 seconds, it is fine; but if it is longer or the finger starts to turn darker, release the dressing.

E=Elevation (Keep the finger above the level of the heart to slow blood flow to the site)

The goal is to minimize inflammation. Individual mileage may vary, but this has worked many times for me. Just remember to check the capillary blood flow under compression.

Ibuprofen is also effective in reducing inflammation, but be sure to follow the label directions and give it time to work. One or two doses isn't typically enough, often it requires a few days.  (+ info)

How do I know if my finger is broken?

About a week ago, I sustained a finger injury due to severe impact. Since then, it has been in terrible pain, and it is swollen, discolored (green, blue, purple), and extremely tender to touch. There is also a bump on it that feels hard. I can move some parts of it without much difficulty, but the part that suffered the most impact is very difficult to move, and if it brushes against anything, it kills. Do you think I broke it, or did I just bruise the bone? Thank you in advance. No rude answers please!
----------

You can't tell if it's broken unless you get an x-ray. You will have to go to your doctor and get an order for the x-ray. It it is broken then the doctor will probably tape it to the next finger (buddy tape). That's what I would do, and ice it and take a pain reliever. Going to the doctor and getting the x-ray are personal choices. Good luck.  (+ info)

What is this sting at the tip of my finger when I apply pressure?

This is the second time I think this has occurred. When I apply pressure to the tip of my index finger, I get a kind of stinging feeling inside. Any idea what it could be?
It happened out of nowhere, no injury that I'm aware of whatsoever.
----------

You might have gotten a small splinter or a cut. I have gotten those sometimes and they are so small you cant notice them. It starts to sting when you press on them or maybe run it under water.

If it's a splinter, get a magnifying glass, tweezers and a needle. You might have to dig it out.
If that doesn't work, then its probably a cut so just put some Neosporin on the aching area and cover it with a band-aid.  (+ info)

How can a hamstring and finger break be prevented in football?

just wondering cause i love the game of footbal and i play but i want to prevent those injuries
----------

By not playing. There is no way you can prevent injuries. As far as hamstring--the best thing to do is to stretch out before the game or practice. That's it.  (+ info)

What are my options for a finger that keeps dislocating?

I dislocated a finger with a tiny fracture I went through physical therapy but over a year later(after initial injury) the joint will pop in and out. It's not on my dominate hand so it doesn't bother me other then the occasional pain.
----------

I would visit your doctor, and maybe agree with undertaking surgery.
I broke and dislocated my finger just a few weeks ago, and believe me, I know how you feel  (+ info)

I have been diagnosed with Mallet finger w/a fracture. Any personal experience on returning to sports?

Basically want to know if/when I can return to playing Dodgeball. I got the finger splinted 2 days after the injury and the doctor said he won't know if surgery is needed until week 5 or 6 of healing. I just want to know what to expect. Thanks!
----------

Most often, a mallet finger can be treated with a simple splint. A Stack splint is the easiest type of splint to use for this injury. The difficult part is if the splint is removed and the finger tip is allowed to bend, the treatment must be restarted from the beginning. Since a Stack splint is usually worn for 6 to 8 weeks, this can be a significant challenge! So you can expect to not return to sports for at least 6 weeks, and possibly longer. Surgery is only considered if the outcome of surgery is expected to be better than the outcome of treatment without surgery. Since your injury was treated early, it may respond well to the splinting. Recovery from any surgery would probably be another four to six weeks.

In the last week my first finger has smollen & is sore to bend the digit ,I dont recall an injury, any ideas?

Hi, my first finger is swollen and hurts to bend it , like the bone at the digit is damaged or something, the small finger on my other hand had this symtom too but it has cured itself, not sure what is wrong. I donĀ“t recall an accident, its quite sore to bend the finger like its got fluid built up or something .Any advice what it could ?
----------

have you scraped you finger along something rough or trapped the middle digit at any point as they are the main causes of something like that if not it sounds like your hands are getting too cold alot this also causing pain and aching and swelling. wash your hands with hot water regularly if it doesnt clear up within 2-3 days see a doctor.  (+ info)

How can i protect my finger?

I am very athletic, and back in September i injured my middle and index fingers during a block in a volleyball game. The injury wasn't to bad, but they were swollen for a good week. Ever since that injury, i have injured that same index finger twice more in basketball.I figure the finger is just real weak now and I need some type of protection to prevent me from injuring it again in sports. I figured maybe a finger sleeve might work? But as far as i know finger sleeves are used for better grip on the ball. Does anyone have any ideas please?
