What is the normal length for a female femur?

I am a cyclist and want to get my bike fit perfect, but I seem to have an akward-length femur. (It's a lot longer than my tib-fib.) What is normal for a human female?
----------

The femur is usually Femur is one-quarter of the body height. So take your height and divide it by four. There is no standard size, a taller female for example will have a longer femur.  (+ info)

How long will it take for a fractured femur to heal?

A friend of mine was in a car accident. She fractured her femur and was hospitalized for quite some time. She is home now and on crutches. She is afraid that they waited to long to do the surgery she needs. She is still in a lot of pain and is concerned. Please help.
----------

My son broke his femur in a car accident. We were told 6 months average recovery time. 3 months for the bone to fully heal, and another 3 months of physio to get the muscle back.

My son had major problems, and he ended up with 2 non-unions & 6 surgeries. He finally healed after 2 1/2 yrs. This is extremely rare though.

Some don'ts for your friend. No smoking and no anti-inflammitories. Both have been proven to delay bone healing.

Make sure she follows the Dr's orders. If he says put some weight on your leg, than make sure she does it. Painful or not. If he says no weight, make sure she doesn't put any weight on it. He knows best, by looking at the x-rays.

As far as them waiting too long to do the surgery. I think she'll be fine. When my son went for his 6th surgery, his leg was just as broken as the day of the accident, and this was 19 months later.

Yes. It is a painful injury, but it will get better.  (+ info)

3 months before i got femur fracture in thigh what is the recovery time?

I am kiran 29 yrs old i was treated my femur fracture 3 months before,i can walk now but when i start walking i get pain in my knee joint for few minutes sometimes swells also & i cant walk straight & even i do strenthing exercises. How many days still to go for full recovery?
----------

Recovery time is roughly 6 months. Usually 3 months for the bone to heal, and another 3 months of physiotherapy. Are you going to physio? If not, you should be. They will know the best exercises to regain the muscles, and will teach you to walk correctly.

As far as the pain in your knee, it could be several things. Did you have an MRI to check for any knee damage when you broke your femur? This is pretty common with a broken femur.

The 2nd thing it could be is from the hardware in your leg. I'm assuming you have an IM nail with screws at your hip and knee? If so it could be from the rod digging into your knee. Removal of the bottom screws can help.

When my son broke his femur the Dr told him the nail would have to be removed around 18 months to 2 years. Unfortunately he had complications and had a plate installed instead. He also had alot of knee problems, and did go for an MRI 8 months after his accident. The MRI showed a severe deep bone bruise.  (+ info)

Does a torn rotator resemble avascular necrosis when looking at the results of an MRI?

Why would one doc say it's a torn rotator and the other say it's avascular necrosis when they're looking at the same films and doing the same tests?
----------

A couple of thoughts...I'm not a radiologist, but my first question would be - were both of these docs radiologists? Because a torn rotator involves soft tissue and avascular necrosis involves bony tissue, I would think they could be differentiated on the MRI as long as you had a good quality MRI done on an up-to-date machine and read by a radiologist. I'd get a third opinion that includes comments on the quality of the scan. These 2 problems are treated so differently, you really need to find out which one it is.  (+ info)

How long after femur break can I run and stuff?

I broke my femur in football on september 10. On November 9th i could walk with a limp. Now I'm in physical therapy twice a week and I'm wondering when i can play basketball again.
I have screws in my leg. My leg will most likely never break in the same spot again my doctor said. It was a freak accident in football that was a cheapshot and happened at the exact and i mean exact right time.
----------

It really depends on the serverity of the fracture. I'd probably wait at least until spring...but you need to discuss this with your surgeon who will be taking serial xrays to monitor your progress.  (+ info)

Have any of you had an ultrasound of your unborn that had a short femur bone?

My ultrasound showed a short femur bone for the baby, which can be a soft marker of Down's Syndrome. However, it is the only thing they can see. It is only "one week" less in age than the rest of the baby's bones. Have any of you had this show up and then delivered a perfectly healthy baby?
----------

I didn't have the short femur bone, no. I did have the soft marker of the calcium spot on the left heart valve. That was scary. I did the triple screen and it came back negative. I have a perfect, nornal baby

The docs told me if there is only ONE soft marker, you are pretty safe. If you need to know, get the blood work done. It is not hugely accurate though. A negative is almost 100%, but a positive is only like 60% guaranteed.

I wouldn't worry about it.  (+ info)

What are the dangers of a shattered femur untreated for 24 hours?

A character in my novel sustains a shattered femur that breaks the skin and can not get medical attention for twenty-four hours, what can he expect to happen? I need symptoms and possible recovery solutions...ever be abe to walk again, etc.?
----------

Well first off a broken femur is a major injury because the femuric artery is placed next to your femur so he would most likely die in that 24 hours from blood loss. There is, in fact, a way to slow the bleeding process by pressing on the vein that is located next to the groin and high up the hip but even with that, he will not survive. If he does how ever survive he would have to worry about infections and what not. He will also be in a high state of shock, meaning he will be cold, confused, disoriented, and probably pass out. And if he survives all that without medical treatment, I doubt he will be able to walk.  (+ info)

How would you find out the weight of a femur on a living person?

How to fix upper femur joint popping?

I recently started to do daily sit-ups and I noticed that each time I do one on my right leg the joint that connects my femur to my hip bone pops. Its kinda like when you crack your knuckles. It doesn't hurt but like cracking your knuckles I'm afraid that if I keep on doing it, it will eventually leed to permanent issues. I am a 16 year old healthy boy and never broken or hurt that part of the leg before. I would like professional help, but any is better than known. I will try to answer any additional questions.
----------

Go to a chiropractor, you may be out of place. A simple adjustment should get you back where you're supposed to be. Most chiropractors don't take insurance but only charge between 20-50 per session. Mine charges 30 no matter what they do. Legs, hips, back, neck...
Good Luck!  (+ info)
