Female Athlete Triad/Amenorrhea?

I havent gotten my period since November. I do track and field, am 14, 95 pounds and 5'. I used to be a little lighter but gained some weight back after I did some research about amenorrhea and noticed my periods have started becoming irregular. Yet regardless, it still hasnt started yet. I dont have any eating disorders or anything, but I do exercise a lot which lowers my body fat percentage. I havent told my mom or consulted a doctor about it either.

Is this potentially harmful? Is there something I could do to start my periods again? Like a new diet maybe?
----------

wow, how convenient, I just finished studying a lecture with a case study just like this. You need to put on a little weight and probably go on oral contraception to regulate your periods. You will probably want to cut your activity too. Talk to your doctor.
Under high activity levels coupled with a low body weight the female body reverts hormone levels back to the prepubertal levels.  (+ info)

What is the most efficient weight loss program for a female athlete without causing any period problems?

I'm an 18 year old female athlete. In the game I play, I have to watch my weight to fit in a certain weight category before competitions. Last year, I lost around 8 kg before a competition. Thank God I did well in that competition, but I stopped getting my period for 6 months. Right now I have to lose 5 to 6 kg, I want to know what is the best way to lose that weight without affecting my period and my health. Please help me, I should start working on losing that weight.
----------

Wow, this is a tough situation.

Your ability to have periods is directly related to the amount of body fat you carry.

Less than 20% and you will stop getting periods.

More than 23-25% body fat, and you will start to flirt with health issues.

If you STOP getting periods, you will start to lose bone density (Given the content of your inquiry, however, I'm sure you're already aware of this).

At about the age of 19 yrs., women tend to ossify (their cartilaginous growth plates turn into bone) thereby ending the skeletal growth process and giving the woman an additional 10-15 lbs. of non-fat bodyweight (the clothes still fit fine, you just weigh more ...).

Please, please consider going up to another weight class, if this is an option.

I know that this can be quite scary, but your health and long-term well-being is at stake here (REALLY).

Good luck with this.  (+ info)

What are the chances of a female getting diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome in the UK?

I think I may have Aspergers syndrome. I will ask for a referall soon. I am a young female adult will I be taken seriously? Thanks
----------

This is a good question and I have some knowlegde of this.

The likelyhood is that, unless you are obviously disabled looking, your GP won't think you have it or won't think you will benefit from having a diagnosis. However, often when you ask a UK GP for a referral, for whatever reason, people often get one, so you might be referred. The problem might then be though is where you are referred to and what diagnostic services are avilable in your local area of the UK. There aren't many places who know about Aspergers in females and how it presents. People who do know about Asperger's in females say that females are less aggressive, tend not to have meltdowns that boys do, have better social skills than boys, are more empathetic than boys for example. This means that females are less likely to be diagnosed with Aspergers and many diagnostitians won't know how to spot it. Tony Attwood is a well renouned expert on Asperger's including Asperger's in females so you might find his material useful.

Another problem is that as you are a female adult you have to provide informants who knew you as a child and remember you well as a child. Parents can forget how you were in some ways and are unable to answer the specific questions assessors ask and are sometimes unable to give reliable answers, so a diagnosis might be made on shakey grounds. As a young female adult though your parents' memory might not be so bad.

So, I think the chances aren't great that an adult female will be confidently diagnosed. If you were looking to have an assessment for a female child who is having serious difficulties then the chances are higher.

Another quesion is why you would want to be diagnosed with it and how you think it would be helpful. Are you looking for support? There are hardly any services for people with Aspergers. If it is for a child or young person who is at school or college, then it would be helpful in terms of having a support worker, a study helper, computer equipment, extra time in tests etc that is if any of these things are needed. Not all people with Asperger's need help like this though. You could get this help by being diagnosed with dyslexia though. The difference with a dyslxia diagnosis though is that it only last 2 years and you have to pay for the dyslexia test again if you need extra time for exams (which I think costs about £200 or more). If you have an Asperger diagnosis then I think accommodations for that would stand for life.

If you are an adult female with Asperger's then be prepared that you won't recieve any support unless you have mental health problems and need therepy from a psychiatrist or a psychologist - which you would get just the same as if you did not have Asperger's. So, having an Asperger's diagnosis wouldn't make any difference to the services you get.

If you live in London there is an organsation called Prospects who offer support. I don't know how useful they are.

I know a bit about this issue actually, so if you have any more questions then feel free to e-mail me. Below is a YouTube clip of Tony Attwood talking about females with Asperger's that might interest you. I have lots of other clips on the subject of Asperger's in females if you're interested.  (+ info)

How common is Long QT Syndrome and heart arrhythmia problems in a 15 yr old female?

I have heart problem and had to have sugury at 15 and now i have anxiety attacks and severe Anxiety Disorder i am on Effexor 150 mg for the anxiety disorder and the Dr has tried 5 different migraine meds im currently on 1 of them right now but i cant tell that it has done anything yet so so far nothing has helped them and now they think it might be from my pupils not contracting right and i am on Zertec or how ever you spell that lol for terrible allergies too and i am on birth control (not b/c im a havin sex or nothing) for ungodly periods and cramps they last 7-8 days heavy flow the whole time so i was just wanting to know how common is it for a 15 year old female to have this many problems???
----------

While I'm not sure how common it really is, I have heard that this can be genetic. Do either of your parents suffer from the same long QT Syndrome? I have an associate of mine who's wife, and 15 year old daughter both suffer this same condition, they have both had to have a surgery to implant a pace maker. You'll recover the surgery fairly quickly, and I know that the scar can be made almost completely unnoticeable. Good luck!  (+ info)
