Fecal Impaction Advice......Please?

I've had the problem twice in the past (about 5 or 6 years ago)..Impaction in lower colon, not rectum (not to be gross, but can feel hard stool with tip of my finger when fully inserted)....Visits to ER on both ocassions resulted in admission for a couple of days of milk and molasses enemas. Problem is here again and is complicated by current lack of health insurance.
My questions are these:
1) Can I safely self-administer milk and molasses enemas?
2) Do you know the mixture, frequency and amount to administer?
I would appreciate any help you might give....It's 8 days now since I've gone except for the liquid stool from above. Thank you.

Bill, taking a plain warm tap water enema of one or two quarts is so much better than a milk and molasses enema.  (+ info)

Fecal impaction? Or am I just constipated?

I haven't went to the bathroom right since my daughter was born and she is 4 months old. I have been Constipated? I guess for about 2 wks. I feel pressure in my stomach and it burns. I just don't feel good. Do you think I'm constipated or do you think it could be more than that?
I took an exlax about an hour ago. I read and it said if it was fecal impation not to. So I don't understand if I did something wrong or not.
----------

A 'fecal impaction' is a solid, immobile bulk of stool that can develop in the rectum as a result of chronic constipation. If you only took the exlax an hour and a half ago you may need to wait for up to 4-6 hours. Drink cups of tea and plenty of water (try it warm rather than cold). SO you say that you have had this prob for 4 months. You poor thing - so are you having runny stools instead or continual constipation? You wont know what is wrong until you see a doc and get a referral to a gyno. You could have shifted something during pregnancy (weight of it) or during the birth itself. There is a another laxative you could try called NULAX its a natural fruit laxative and works incredibly well for constipation. Most laxatives say dont use if preggy or if you have nausea or vomitting because basically you need to see a doc as it could be something else that is wrong with your bowel. Most even say not to use even if you have stomach / abdominal pains for the same reason. The thing is it is best to give it a go and see if it helps and if it doesnt or gets worse or continues then go to the doc. Good Luck hope this helps. Do some deep breathing and get someoone to gently downward stroke massage your lower back and bowel area at the front. Also you need to eliminate an ulcer. remember, over use of laxatives isnt a good thing either because the bowel can lose its elasticity to move things through it, and you can also end up moving through your food before your body has had a chance to take the nutrients it needs hence you could become unwell in other ways. There are also all sorts of food allergies that can cause this so a trip to the doctor will rule all these things out. I'm surprised you havent been to see the doc already.  (+ info)

I think I have fecal impaction what should I do. Please help me. Urgent.?

My doc is gone all week. Enema, Prune Juice, Milk Of Magnesia, Laxative, wasn't really helped me. I'm only 15. I have consistent discomfort in my abdomen. I'm scared. Is my life at risk. I can't go to doctors. Should I ask my mom to take me to the emergency room because what I have read is once impacted the only thing that will fix the problem is to for it to me manually evacuated. Please Help.
----------

Have your mom take you to an urgent care facility or the emergency room. Or she can try giving you a large volume (1 to 2 quart) tap water enema with a tablespoon of salt added per quart. It needs to be administered slowly with the bag hanging about 18" to 24" above the anus and you lying down on your left side. If you start to cramp she should stop until the cramping subsides. After the bag is about 1/3 empty she should have you roll either to your back or stomach and then administer the next 1/3 bag and finally you roll to your right side for the rest. After wards lie there and try to retain it for as long as possible (5 to minutes) as it will be saturating the stool. That should clear it out. Those over the counter packaged enemas don't have the same effect.

After this increase fiber in your diet, increase the water intake and increase your exercise like walking or running.  (+ info)

Fecal Impaction after rectal surgery, Please Help!?

I had rectal surgery for an anal fissure, and hemorhoids, and he also cut my sphincter muscle to relieve pressure to avoid future problems. I have always had IBS (constant diarrhea) and have never been truly constipated a day in my life. After the surgery, it was EXTREMELY painful to eliminate and the pain pills gave me extreme constipation. It is now 9 days after surgery and I am still experiencing a lot of pain due to the straining from trying to eliminate. I can't laugh, cough, or sneeze without having leakage, and i constantly have this major urge to go, yet when I try, the pain from pushing is unbearable and nothing really comes out. However, I can feel the hard mass when I wipe and when I am not going to the bathroom, I have this constant feeling of pressure in my rectum. I'm planning on calling the dr tomorrow but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to help relieve some of my symptoms now. Thank you for your help

You may have to be digitally disimpacted... meaning by hand!

I am concerned about the leakage around the fecal impaction. It may simply be because the sphincter was cut or you may have an obstruction higher in the tract.

I would not suggest any enemas or other remedies until you see the doctor as your are post op..............  (+ info)

Does this sound like fecal impaction or diarrhea..ANYONE THAT KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT THE SUBJECT PLEASE HELP!?

****I KNOW THIS IS LONG , BUT PLEASE READ****

Okay so for maybe around two (2) months i have had problems going to the bathroom, have to strain more, only small amounts etc.

Over the last week and a bit, almost two weeks, i have had runny diarrhea but then for maybe 1-3 days i have to hard to pass stools again. ( Which is starting to hurt my stomach muscles due to strain.)

Around 4 days ago, after the diarrhea i had that day passed, i had a "normal" bowel movement.(Large and well formed)

I dont exercise much, im young (17) and feel heathly otherwise so i spend more time here on the computer. I probably dont even drink a glass of water a day, always say i will but go back to fizzy drinks.
^^^ i heard that can cause constipation.

What do you think, please help? Just want to feel normal again.
----------

It just sounds like you are irregular. You shouldn't have to "force a deuce." I suggest incorporating more fiber into your diet - wheat crackers, wheat bread, whole grain cereal (lots of kid cereals are whole grain), black beans, green veggies, etc.. You could also take the easy road and eat chewable fiber tablets - the only thing I suggest is to maintain consistent diet for a few weeks to regulate your digestive tract. Yeah - drinking alot of soda can give you this condition too - especially if it is caffeinated - caffeine is a diuretic.

Caffeine will put you into a constant cycle of dehydration. Try tweaking the amount of other liquids you drink - a little change might be worth the lack of discomfort trying to go to the bathroom.  (+ info)

How to get rid of my fecal impaction?

I have been constipated for 2-3 weeks now and have a hard lump of crap in my rectum which is physically impossible to pass. Have been on senna and dulcoease for about a week, went to doc's last week, and was prescribed movicol and a mini enema. Neither of these has worked. What I need is a strong laxative to break up this hard lump, something heavy duty.

Have been eating prunes, raisins, curries, everything people have suggested hasnt worked. I dont care if it hurts slightly or I have to stay by a toilet all day I need to pass this monster!! help?!
Stop with the ****ing spam, or at least spam me with a site that contains constipation cures! ****!

How long would someone have to be constipated for the fecal matter to get compacted into a bowel obstruction?

Or how long would the fecal matter have to be compacting to become one? I mean a medically classifiable bowel instruction. I know this is an obscure question... Hopefully there's a doctor out there who can answer this.
----------

That is a very serious matter. It can be related to other health problems going on and even cause them. If the person is in ill health, caretakers may not even notice the problem building.

I don't think there is any standard answer to this question. Different circumstances can produce a bowel obstruction in a shorter or longer period of time.

I am not a doctor, but I have seen this problem being ignored in a hospital despite the patient's complaints. So, if you think this is happening, talk to the doctor, director of nursing, or whoever could and wil do something about it.  (+ info)
