Fecal impaction or paranoid?

Okay so I just got back from traveling for about two weeks and during the trip I was very constipated only able to pass about 2-3 small pellet like feces.
On the plane ride home I began to feel very nauseas and have a horrible pounding headache.
As soon as I got home I immeadietely had to go to the bathroom and had several bowel movements- long and smooth.
Today I still had the headache, my stomach area was constantly rumbling and suddenly got very bad liquidy diarrhea.
Could this be a fecal impaction or am I just simply paranoid?

You stated that you did go so, how could you have an impactation if you went ? and so, don't worry, it's over.  (+ info)

HELP PLEASE! Severe fecal impaction!?

HELP PLEASE! i suspect that i have had severe fecal impaction for over a month. i have noticed a sharp pain in my lower right back only when i bend over, groin discomfort/feeling of warmth, frequency of urination, fatigued and sore muscles, chills and fever, and congestion in the nose and lungs. could this all be attributed to the fecal impaction, seeing as bacteria reenters the blood stream if it is not expelled from the anus? could the fecal impaction cause a urinary tract infection that spread to one of my kidneys, and could that explain the drop in my overall immune system? PLEASE HELP SOMEBODY!

Toddler fecal impaction?

My son is 1 1/2 yrs old. He has been sick the past 3 weeks. Upper respitory infection, ear infections, flu, constipation. We got the infections under control, but the Dr. said he was dehydrated from the flu. He said to give him pedialyte and that should fix everything. Well he is no longer vomitting, but is still severly constipated. He has not had a normal bm in 3 weeks. He is very cranky, and very lethargic, just sits around and sleeps all day. When I feel his stomach I can feel a big build up of hard stool, from his lower abdomen near pubic bone all the way to his upper stomach. He is literally full of crap. The Dr. said the pedialyte would fix this problem, but it has been 3 days and no change so far. Could he have a fecal impaction and that is why he literally can't go?
----------

I have one thing to say to you - Glycerin Suppositories.

They are gentle and make the impacted stool soft, and lubricate the anus to make it easy for him to "go".

After you have cleared up this problem, make sure that in addition to giving him fibre rich foods, you give him lots of liquids - if given high fibre foods but not enough liquids, then he can get constipated easily.  (+ info)

solution to fecal impaction....will fiber help this condition?

this is such a dumbass problem to deal with but yet its still a problem nonetheless. i have fecal impaction...of course i have heard that the main solution is an enema. not that im afraid of enemas or anything because they dont hurt, just causes a little discomfort, i am hoping that its only required as a last resort. is there an alternate solution to solving fecal impaction such as a high fiber drink or some other type of solution???
in response to the 3rd answer...i have already went thru the extreme pain and cramping. i took magnesium caltrate and it got things going except for the fact that there are some very hard stools left that wont come out and if they do, they are hard as rocks and are hard to pass along.

yep fiber will help you should be having about 18mg a day  (+ info)

Chronic Nausea after Fecal Impaction?

Recently, I dealt with fecal impaction. I went to the ER for help, which was unsuccessful. I was given magnesium citrate, which did nothing, so far as I could tell.

After going to 2 more doctors, I was given Sorbitol 70%, which seemed to do the trick. I felt a lot better, although, I still had nausea/reflux.

I'm going to the bathroom regularly now, but I stay nauseated. Especially today, after having consumed 3/4 of a 20 oz. bottle of soda.

Does anyone have any clue what this might be? I've been dealing with this for 2 months now.
I'm not taking the Sorbitol anymore, no. It relieved my first problem, but now, I have other problems.

I stay bloated constantly, nauseated all the time, I'll get "chills", where my hands will get sweaty and cold, and it just won't go away.

Drinking the soda seemed to make matters even worse, and I don't know why. Could this be related to my gallbladder?
Also, on top of all of that, I've been having a lot of back pain lately. Particularly between my shoulder blades, and sometimes in my lower back.

Please hel[p...fecal impaction/constipation/ a blockage? 10 pts?

I haven't done a "number 2" for about a month now. I've been taking strong laxatives, suppositries, prunes, warm prune juice, LOADS of water, fruit...even Movicol which i got on prescription. Nothing is working. I was looking it up on the internet and i think it could be a "fecal impaction"....where the cure is to break up the stools yourself using your finger..in a rubber glove! and a lubricant. I tried this with vaseline and reached as far in as i could go but i can't reach the stool to break it up manually. It seems to be too high up, well...i think i can feel it through some kind of thick squishy skin.
I'd really rather do this myself than have a doctor do it. too embarassing.
I need a quick solution, please help!
Has anyone had anything similar? Is it normal to feel this slippery skin thing?
Oh and there's blood too, not an awful lot, but a bit.
And could colonic irrigation help?
----------

If you can't feel the stool, you may have a twisted colon as fecal impaction would be the stool is large and rock hard in the rectum. Also after a month of no poo, you would be passing a diarrhea like leakage around the stool. I would get to an Urgent care facility ASAP.

If you are determined to try a doit yourself cleaning, I would start by buying stool softeners and taking about 6. Buy a fleet mineral oil enema. Take it and retain it for at least an hour (it is a lubricant not a stimulant). Try to defecate and pass as much of the oil as you can. Follow with a 1 to 2 quart soap suds enema (use Ivory bar soar or a castile soap, GNC sells Dr. Bonners liquid castile soap) administered slowly hanging the bag about 18" above the rectum. Retain that enema for as long as possible (maybe only minutes; but, 15 minutes or more would be best as it is stimulating your colon while softening the stools. After passing that, repeat with 2 or 3 warm water enemas that have a teaspoon or two of salt per quart added to the water so as to prevent too much aabsorbingof the liquid through the colon wall. If this works be careful for the next day or so because you can't trust a fart (it will have oil residue in it and soil your pants).

If any of the enemas fail to return, you need to STOP and get to the ER ASAP.  (+ info)

Could I have fecal impaction?

Ok, here's the full story. I realized yesterday that I hadn't had a bowel movement in 5 days which is a long time. Constipation is not new to me but this one, however, really scared me. I could not go normally neither yesterday nor today, so I was finally forced to use my finger to break up everything as far as I could reach and then I passed a dry, large stool. However - I still have a feeling that my bowels are not completely clean. I tried very hard to locate any more stool in my bowels with my finger, but could not. Now - is it possible that I have a fecal impaction somewhere higher in my colon?
I have almost no appetite and feel thirsty most of the time. These symptoms really scare me though it is nothing serious like nausea or fever. On the one hand I know that I already passed a horrible stool (not really dry, in fact), and could not FIND any more, but - is it possible that somewhere deep in my bowels there is something I haven't yet taken care of?
Added: Actually, I would reforumlate my question thus: Is it possible to have fecal impaction while the rectum is completely empty?
----------

It is doubtful, since a blockage higher up in the colon would not be likely to be that far behind what was present in your rectum. You may have obstipation, which is severe constipation, and your peristalsis may be sluggish. I would buy a Fleet enema from your pharmacy and give it a try. If you get no results from that, call your doctor for advice. In the meantime drink plenty of fluids, and a glass of prune juice every morning wouldn't hurt.

EDIT.....fecal impactions can occur when the rectum is empty. Obstipation is , in essence, fecal obstruction due to acute constipation. However, obstructions farther back in the intestine typically manifest in the beginning with diarrhea, as watery stool from the small intestine passes the obstructed area. As the obstruction worsens, vomiting is the major symptom seen first since the digestive tract is "backed up".
Since you are not vomiting, and not experiencing diarrhea, if there is any further obstruction from impacted stool, it is most likely in the rectum, or at the end of the sigmoid, and a Fleet enema will stimulate peristalsis, lubricate the passage and be likely to alleviate it.  (+ info)

constipation/fecal impaction question?

6 weeks ago i began with diarrhea, pain cramps, fever, tiredness.... if i had to go..... i had to go! it was extremely painful, but went away, 3 weeks ago i started again, doctors gave me medicine to stop the diarrhea/cramps and signed me off work for a week. A couple of days ago the pain got so bad, after screaming in agony all day my partner took me to the E.R, i had an x ray done which basically showed i had a ball of 'poo' stuck so my bowel had become inflammed, i dont understand how me having severe diarrhea (i mean 6/7 times a day, half and hour on the toilet) can be constipation/fecal impaction?!!!!!! i have been in absaloute agony for over 5 weeks, everything the doctors gave me have made it worse, im apparently lucky it hadnt become infected, i just dont understand, i havnt been constipated, im confused!! anyone have similar experience!????
----------

One thing you didn't mention that would help me answer would be the condition of your bowels prior to the bout with diarrhea. From personal experience I can tell you that if you were constipated prior to the diarrhea then it could very possibly be a fecal impaction. What happens is that the only thing that can pass around the impaction is liquid stool from higher up in the digestive tract (the diarrhea). When you saw the doctor who gave you anti-diarrheal medications, it may have just compounded the problem by adding to the impaction.
If you were not constipated prior to the bout of diarrhea, it's possible that you were given too high a dose of anti-diarrheal meds for your system that resulted in the impaction.
In any case, I hope the problem has been resolved. From personal experience, I know it can make you extremely uncomfortable. Good luck!  (+ info)

fecal impaction/ severe constipation...PLEASE HELP?

I had surgery last Monday and i've been on 2 different pain killers since. I've also been taking stool softener daily. i've been eating normally and drinking tons of water. i havent had a bowel movement for over 10 days now!

On Sunday night i started vomiting and had terrible abdoman pain. I decided to go to the ER where they gave me two enimas and tried doing a manual extraction for impaction. None of these worked. They also did an Xray which showed no obstruction.

Since then i've been using suppositories, oral laxitives, stool softeners, and eating a high fiber diet. Also, today after i tried another suppository... there was some red blood. I don't want to damage my intestines anymore! Nothing is working and i'm so uncomfortable!! i've stopped taking all the pain medicine but now my hand that i had the surgery on hurts terrible!! What else can i do?? Please help me feel better. Im starting to get worried...HELP!!!!
Thank you everyone who answered. I ended up going back to the doctor and then back to the ER. The problem isn't completely fixed but they gave me some different medicine to try. I'm hopeful this one will work. Thanks again!

Definately get back to the ER...you need more testing to make sure you don't have an obstruction higher up in your bowel or, worse, that you have ruptured your bowel. Do not let this go untreated! See a doctor ASAP!  (+ info)

Could a fecal impaction diagnosed by pelvic CT scan actually be colorectal cancer?

Last week, a bout of severe left, lower abdominal pain sent me to the E.R. A CT scan (without contrast) of my abdomen and pelvis was done and the pelvic CT showed a "moderate amount of fecal material is present within the colon." (as read by the radiologist).

Is it possible that the fecal material could be a tumor instead? How likely is it that the CT was misread?

For about a year now, I've had problems with chronic gas and bloating that I assumed is due to my avoidance of red meat and my eating whole grains, legumes, beans, etc for protein. Beano and simethicone are ineffective.
----------

There is a big difference between fecal impaction and a moderate amount of fecal material and this would not look anything like a tumor. A CT does not rule out colon cancer however, it only rules out a larger more advanced one. CTs are not misread, but sometimes things are not well visualized, questionable or too small to characterize. I can’t tell is any of these things exists based on a single sentence of the report. The ER is not a place to go for a diagnosis and they should have given you discharge instructions which should include follow up with your physician. The only way to rule out colon cancer or determine any problem in the colon is with a colonoscopy.  (+ info)
