What is therapeutic massage and does it really work?

I read somewhere that some psychologists use therapeutic massages as part of their treatment programs for victims of physical/sexual abuse or for people feeling disconnected from their bodies.
----------

there are many uses and ways for someone to get massages. is you are interested in one for a specific reason, you should talk with someone who will be giving it.

Massaging gives your circulation a boost, connects you by touch, if you are open for touch. helps clean your lymph nodes of the impurities they are working on riding your body of. help clean the mind, ect. reflexology uses the hands and feet to pin point problems in the body. many many good uses.

So if someone of abuse is open to the idea of massaging, which a non sexual touch, it is a very good idea. your skin is a very large sensory part of you.

Massages can do wonders.  (+ info)

Is cooking therapeutic for you, and if so, how?

I am researching this question for a project and would love some feedback about the therapeutic qualities of cooking, when it was therapeutic (what was going on for you at the time that cooking helped you deal with the situation), what you felt before, during and after, etc. And also some other positive ways you have coped with difficulty that would be deemed creative. Thanks a lot for your feedback!
----------

I think cooking, especially baking, is very therapeutic. Same with washing dishes. It's a way of doing something that you can control or predict when things around you are hectic and chaotic.

Baking/cooking is some what formula driven. Follow the recipes and you should get good results - minimum thinking required. Great for unwinding, destressing and diverting my mind from heavier issues, finding a quiet place from yelling screaming kids (er... I mean little angels) or even when I'm my exploration mood.

Sharing the end results with family and friends, plus receiving complements is an ego boost. lol.

Also, it's a kick when you try something new and it works out.

There is a lot to be said about knife work. Some people use knife work as a way to vent aggression or frustration which I can see, but I also see knife work as a painter sees a brush. It helps translate the raw material into a final product.

As with each stroke of a brush, each slice and cut transforms a few vegetable into a ratatouille (as in the movie's final dish - which is more accurately described as a byaldi)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confit_byaldi

The effort going into the food and when you can show it is what is often touted as the cook putting "love" and "soul" into the food.  (+ info)

What materials are used in the fashion industry?

I am giving my first steps in fashion, and I would be interested to know what materials are used in the industry today and through history.

Thanks to all.
----------

This is a very extensive subject and the materials used today are the same that have been used for the last half century at least
Cotton
Polyester
Nylon
Raon
Acrylic
Linen
In the last 40 -50 years spandex took the place of rubber and that is still popular in many knits
Spandex is also used in wovens now

Leather took the market in the last 25 years or so - skirts and pants instead of only outerwear.

That's all I can give in this small space....but you need to read more on the "history of fabrics"  (+ info)

Who knows the double diagnostic Bipolair 2 disorder and Prolactinoom?

I have a bipolar 2 disorder sins more than 6 year. Sins 2 month I know I also have a Prolactinoom. Who is also known with this double diagnostic? I would like to chat about difference in the symptoms I experience. Who can giff me anwsers?
----------

First of all, my condolences to you. That sounds brutal. Although I do not have bipolar 2, I am left to wonder why they don't just call it quadpolar or quadrapolar? I think it would help to bring greater attention to this condition. A catchy name is half the battle, Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis was hiding in the shadows until it changed it's name to Lou Gherigs disease.
Same problem with this Prolactinoom. Never heard of it. It sounds like some kind of lactating monkey disease. Am I close? I once dated an octoroon, and she was hot, but she definitely was not lactating. Anyhoo, I have found that people with rare diseases are best served when they form groups to help raise awareness, inform the public and battle their respective maladies. Should you wish to do this, I would highly recommend the name "Antilactinoom", you know, cause your against it.  (+ info)

Is finding pacing back and forth at a slow pace therapeutic a disorder?

I've always found pacing back and forth (at a slow pace) or sometimes walking in circles very therapeutic and recently, my parents have told me that they noticed it ever since I was old enough to walk. I also find that sometimes in the middle of the night, I wake up to an uneasy feeling in my legs as if they were itching for me to get up and walk. Is this any kind of disorder? Or maybe it's triggered by a phobia? If so, is there a name for such behaviors?
----------

No, the pacing itself is not a disorder (1), although the waking up with an uneasy feeling in your legs might be a symptom of a medical condition.
The pacing behavior is not a problem unless it causes undue stress for you, but it sounds like it is just the opposite. Rather than causing distress, you find it therapeutic. Something like this that makes your life easier or more bearable is not necessarily a bad thing - it really depends a lot on your reaction to it. If you are disturbed by it, or you have a lot of fears related to it, I would recommend seeing a counselor or a psychologist for an assessment. Also, you might consider seeing a physician to rule out medical problems.  (+ info)
