Can you be leaking amniotic fluid at 6 weeks?

I am having this wetness in my underwear that is more like water and less like the regular discharge I had. Is it possible I am leaking amniotic fluid this early? I had an ultrasound yesterday and doctor said all was good. Would they have seen on the ultrasound if there was a leak? Has anyone else had something like this?
----------

Not likely. At six weeks leaking fluid would be very rare.

More likely, it is just discharge. During pregnancy, your discharge can be very unusual. It is very common to have a lot of it and for it to be thin and watery, soaking your panties. Definitely invest in some panty liners.

You can call your OB just for reassurance, but if you aren't bleeding, I wouldn't worry too much (I know, easier said than done).  (+ info)

What should I expect at my 36 week appointment tomorrow? Also Amniotic Fluid Question?

Just curious. Do I get an internal? Will they give me a guesstimate at size of the baby? Also just an add on, did anyone else have concerns of leaking amniotic fluid during pregnancy? I think I did the other day and I want to bring it up to my doctor again because I am scared of an infection if I am leaking. Is it a constant leak? Any info on either topic would be appreciated! Thanks!
----------

They will do an internal exam and tell you if you're dilated at all. They could probably give you a guestimate of the baby's size, but even when using an ultrasound, it can be off by a pound either way. And I would definitely tell the doctor if you think you leaked amniotic fluid. When your water breaks, it doesn't always go in a gush, sometimes its a trickle. It probably was just a little pee though. There a person sitting on your bladder! :))  (+ info)

Should i be worried about having high amniotic fluid?

I had a ultrasound at 21 weeks and the told me i had high amniotic fluid. They gave me 2 glucose test that came back negative for gestational diabetes. They scheduled another ultra sound at 27 weeks to monitor. But what can happen with having high fluid is it dangerous to the baby?
----------

It can be a sign that other things are going on. There are conditions that might indicate that the babies mouth is not connected properly to the stomach, there could be a blockage of the intestinal tract, or of course Gestational Diabetes is another concern (although they have already ruled that out). However sometimes they don't know what is causing it.

The risks of high amniotic fluid are preterm labor and preterm delivery. Another concern is that when your water breaks you are at higher risk for what's called a prolapse (the cord comes out before the baby); this cuts off the blood flow to the baby and is an EXTREME emergency situation.  (+ info)

What differs normal discharge from leaks of amniotic fluid?

I've had increased discharge and went to L&d a wk ago due to it..

They checked with a strip and it didn't turn blue.. But I still keep having discharge and makes me kind of damp down there.

Just wondering what the main difference is from amniotic fluid?

I know fluid from the sac is watery..

but how is discharge supposed to be?
I want to know what the difference is please?
----------

Amniotic fluid is a continual leak and either will GUSH or with a slow leak will saturate your underwear non stop. It can also have a distinct smell (I've read) that can be either sweet (I've heard maple syrup-ish) or even like bleach or Comet cleanser...
You may leak urine-that smells like amonia... leaking normal discharge may have an acidic smell and is normally white-ish and thick...
When it's your water it's basically just that-water.  (+ info)

okay so my sister is 32 weeks and she has been leaking amniotic fluid for a month?

she has been leaking amniotic fluid for a month, she said its been everyday and quite a bit comes out. she thought it was discharge so she didnt think anything of it, but then today she found out it has been the amniotic fluid. she just left for the hospital, and i stayed home just in case they induce her, and i need to get things ready here at home, and then ill go to the hospital.

what do you think they will do? do you think they will induce her? or what?
she said the baby has been moving normally.
----------

maybe, if she leaking fluid, it means shes lost her mucus plug and her baby is open to infections. so inducing will get the baby out safe.  (+ info)

Does amniotic fluid really determine the size of your belly at the early stages of pregnancy?

I heard someone say that showing early 3-4 months could depend on how much amniotic fluid your baby has, is this true? I have never heard this. If it is true does that mean if you are not showing it could be to low amniotic fluid?
----------

No, the fact that you are not showing yet does NOT mean you are low in amniotic fluid. That is absurd. There is tremendous variation in how much and how soon women "show."

My gosh there was one woman on here the other day who said she was HUGE and showing markedly at 6 weeks! If this is true, she was just getting fat and eating waaayyy too much. The baby is the size of a cashew nut at 6 weeks, if that!

I can understand your worry, but try to tell yourself over and over "I am going to be fine and my baby is going to be fine." You are going to be okay! Just go to all your doctor's appointments, take regular walks for excercise, eat healthy, and do all the right things.

That's all you can do anyway & worry doesn't help!

Anyway, keep posting in from time to time, I would like to know how everything goes for you. This is my first preg & I am due on May 1.  (+ info)

what causes a woman to have low amniotic fluid?

I've been watching a lot of baby birth shows and some women have low amniotic fluid, and they never say what causes it. thanks
----------

Experts don't always know what causes low levels of amniotic fluid. It's most common late in the third trimester, particularly if you're overdue.

Leaky or ruptured membranes
A small tear in your amniotic membranes allows some fluid to leak out. This can happen at any point in your pregnancy, but it's more common as you approach delivery.

Placental problems
A problem with your placenta, such as a partial abruption, keeps it from supplying enough blood and nutrients to your baby and causes him to stop recycling fluid.

Certain medical conditions
As mentioned above, certain conditions — such as chronic high blood pressure, preeclampsia, diabetes, and lupus — can result in low amniotic fluid levels.

Carrying twins or multiples
You're at risk for low fluid levels if you're carrying twins or multiples. Oligohydramnios is likely in the case of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, in which one twin suffers from too little amniotic fluid while the other creates too much.  (+ info)

What is the term used to denote a normal amount of Amniotic fluid?

Oligohydramnios= low amniotic fluid
Polyhdramnios/hydramnios= High amniotic fluid

I am 38 weeks pregnant, I have been having a watery discharge since a few days. Is it amniotic fluid?

It mainly comes when I am sitting up or standing and when it dries it turns flakey white? Also what sort of infection do mother and baby risk if a amniotic fluid leak wasn't detected in good time? Many thanks for all your replies.
----------

you are just having an increase in dicharge. amniotic fluid usually leaks out more when you are laying down. when your water breaks you will know! some women only have trickle of amniotic fluid and had to have the doc break the bag before labor. I'm not sure exactly what kind of infections you would get but I know you will run a fever and have complications making childbirth difficult. if you worry your water broke dont chance it and call your doc. It probably is just an increase in discharge which is just your cervix thinning out. congrats and good luck  (+ info)

What is the best food and liquids to increase amniotic fluid level

My wife is little worried becuase of low amniotic fluid level. Yesterday she went for Ultrascanning and doctor says the baby's growth fine as of now, but the level of the liquid should increase otherwise it might effect the growth. She entered 6 now and daily taking 4 liters of water, almost bed rest since one month but the level is not upto the minimum. She also lost weight for 2kgs. She couldn't eat because of taking more liquid items, like glucose, cocunut water, 4 literse of water and juices. Doctor says to eat and drink more to increase weight and the liquid level.
Can anyone suggest the food and liquid items which increases her weight and also the liquid level?
----------

I had low amniotic fluid when I was pregnant and my baby stopped growing at 32 weeks. They didn't catch it until I was 36 weeks, and I was induced immediately because of it. I asked my Dr. if there was something I could have done to stop that from happening and she said "No". She said if I would have ate cardboard and didn't drink anything and was on drugs this would have been "my fault" but, I wasn't doing any of those things so, I wouldn't have been able to change anything.
Your wife needs to continue drinking but, also eating many nutritious meals through out the day. If she is filling up on water and not hungry that is not good either. She needs to cut back on fluids and eat something substantial.

All the best!
